Translation

The elements of kāmānuga will be described: That rāgānuga-sādhana-bhakti which is filled with longing and which follows after the kāma-rūpa-rāgātmika-bhakti of the siddha-bhaktas, is called kāmānuga-bhakti. There are two types: sambhogecchā-mayī and tad-tad-bhāvecchātmā.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

That bhakti which exhibits an eagerness to follow after kāma-rūpa-bhakti is called kamānuga. Because previously the word kāma-rūpa in relation to siddha-bhakti was said to indicate activities inspired by conjugal prema, the word tṛṣṇā or thirst used in relation to the sādhaka-bhakta should also mean actions inspired by same type of prema. Thus, that bhakti which is filled with activities that follows in the footsteps of the gopīs’ actions, which are inspired by prominent kāma or conjugal prema within them, and which is inspired by a similar and prominent love thirst in the sādhaka, is called kāmānuga-bhakti. There are two types of activity: those in the mind—consisting of thoughts; and services—consisting of actions of the external senses. One should not say as follows. “If it is prescribed that the sādhaka must perform activities following after the activities of the young gopīs, then, why do the pure devotees not perform worship of the sun, which is undertaken by the gopīs? If the devotees perform such actions, will it harm the purity of their bhakti? The sādhakas also perform actions, such as, worship and Ekādaśī vows, which were performed by Rūpa Gosvāmī and other great devotees. But the gopīs did not perform these.” The word anugāmini means, “following after,” not imitating. One should follow after them, in the sense of accepting the gopīs’ sentiments. It does not mean one should do everything they do. Similarly, taking support of the Vedānta, if one gives explanations with logic, with one’s additional input, it is called, “following the Vedānta.” As previously, the opinions of the recent sauramya-sampradāya are again defeated.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Bhakti that is filled with a thirst for following in the wake of the kāma-rūpa devotees of Vraja is called kāmānuga-bhakti (rāgānuga-bhakti).

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

Conjugal Love Devotional service following in the footsteps of the gopīs of Vṛndāvana or the queens at Dvārakā is called devotional service in conjugal love. This devotional service in conjugal love can be divided into two categories. One is indirect conjugal love, the other direct. In both of these categories, one has to follow the particular gopī who is engaged in such service in Goloka Vṛndāvana.
