Translation

The general characteristics of the ingredients are as follows. In tasting rasa, the causes of rati such as Kṛṣṇa, His devotee, and the sound of the flute are called vibhāvas. The effects of rati, such as smiling are called anubhāvas and the eight symptoms such as being stunned are called sāttvika-bhāvas. The assistants such as self-criticism are called vyabhicāri-bhāvas.

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

There are several origins or causes for this compulsive love of Kṛṣṇa, such as Kṛṣṇa Himself, the devotees of Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa’s playing on the flute. The effect is sometimes loving and sometimes stunted. There are eight transcendental symptoms found in the body during ecstasy, and all of them are possible only by a mixture of the above-mentioned five ecstatic divisions. Without some mixture of these five ecstatic principles, one cannot relish transcendental bliss.
