Verse Text

yathā – anyāyyaṁ na harāv iti vyapagata-dvārārgalā dānavā rakṣī kṛṣṇa iti pramattam abhitaḥ krīḍāsu raktāḥ surāḥ | sākṣī vetti sa bhaktim ity avanata-vrātāś ca cintojjhitāḥ ke viśvambhara na tvad-aṅghri-yugale viśrambhitāṁ bhejire ||260||

Translation

An example: Because there is no sense of injustice in the Lord, even the demons leave their doors open. Because they have faith that Kṛṣṇa is their protector, the devatās indulge in play without worry. Understanding that He is the witness and thus knows their bhakti, those offering obeisances (devotees) have given up anxiety. O supporter of the universe! Who does not have faith in Your lotus feet?

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Instead of the phrase rakṣī kṛṣṇa iti (thinking Kṛṣṇa is our protector) sometimes rakṣī so ’yam iti (He is our protector) is found. The word pramattam here means inattentively. In the sentence pramattam abhitaḥ krīḍāsu raktāḥ surāḥ (The devatās were absorbed completely in playing inattentively), the adjective “inattentive” which actually describes the subject, is attributed to the verb as an adverb, “inattentively.” This has been done to bring about the understanding that by absorbing themselves in play, there is oneness between the subject and the verb. Sākṣī vetti sa bhaktim iti means that the devotees understand that Kṛṣṇa (sa), being the witness (sākṣī) knows (vetti) the real amount of bhakti in the acts they perform. An alternative third line is sākṣī vetti mamāpy asāv agatitām ity āśritāṁ svasthitā: those who are fixed in taking shelter of Kṛṣṇa think “Kṛṣṇa, being the witness, knows my helplessness.”

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

In this connection Rūpa Gosvāmī says that even the demons were relying upon the dependability of Kṛṣṇa, because they were confident that Kṛṣṇa would never attack them without due cause. Therefore, with faith and confidence, they used to live with their doors wide open. And the demigods, although afraid of the demons, were confident of the protection of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore, even in the midst of danger they were engaged in sportive activities. Persons who had never undergone the reformatory ritualistic ceremonies of the Vedas were confident that Kṛṣṇa would accept only faith and devotion, and so they were engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and were freed from all anxieties. In other words, all kinds of men, from the demigods down to the uncultured, can rely on the causeless mercy of the Supreme Lord.
