svastha eva kramān manda-madhya-tīvratva-bheda-bhāk |
romāṣca-kampa-vaisvarṇyāṇy atra trīṇi tanoty asau ||19||
Translation
When the prāṇa takes shelter of itself to a small degree the hairs stand on end. When the prāṇa takes shelter of itself to a moderate degree, the body shakes. When the prāṇa takes shelter of itself to the extreme, the voice chokes up.
Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
These verses describe the way in which one particular sāttvika-bhāva appears. The prāṇa (after the heart has become overcome with emotion and offered itself to the prāṇa) sometimes takes shelter of earth, water, fire or ether, and sometimes of air, which is the basis of prāṇa itself, and moves throughout the body. If the prāṇa takes shelter of earth element stambha or paralysis spreads throughout the body. When the prāṇa becomes fixed in the air element (sva-stha) to a small degree, then hair stands on end. When the prāṇa becomes fixed in the air element to a moderate degree, then shaking of the body occurs. When the prāṇa becomes extremely fixed in the air element, then the voice chokes up.

And when that force comes into contact with the air, there is trembling, failing of the voice and standing of the hairs on the body.
