Verse Text
yathā vā, dāna-keli-kaumudyām (20) –
bhavatu mādhava-jalpam aśṛṇvatoḥ
śravaṇayor alam aśravaṇir mama |
tam avilokayator avilocaniḥ
sakhi vilocanayoś ca kilānayoḥ ||10||
Translation
From Dāna-keli-kaumudī: O friend! Without hearing the words of Mādhava, my ears may as well become deaf. Without seeing the form of Mādhava, my eyes may as well become blind.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
The form aśravaṇiḥ comes from the rule ākrośe naṣ yaniḥ. (Pāṇini 3.3.112) [Note: The affix ani can be added after a word when the syllable “a” precedes the word with meaning of negation. As well there should be a sense of cursing or misfortune expressed.]
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
In Dāna-keli-kaumudī Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī addresses one of Her friends in this manner: “My dear friend, if I cannot hear of the glorious activities of Kṛṣṇa, it is better for Me to become deaf. And because I am now unable to see Him, it would be good for Me to be a blind woman.” This is another instance of disappointment due to separation from Kṛṣṇa.
