prāyo ’tra maraṇāt pūrvā citta-vṛttir mṛtir matā |
mṛtir atrānubhāvaḥ syād iti kenacid ucyate |
kintu nāyaka-vīry ārthaṁ śatrau maraṇam ucyate ||102||
Translation
The state of consciousness just prior to death is generally called mṛti. However, some say that mṛti should be considered only an external similarity to death (anubhāva). It has been described in the enemies of Kṛṣṇa (though it is not the vyabhicāri-bhāva called mṛti) just in order to show His power.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Three statements are made concerning mṛti. The author is not satisfied with the first conclusion, since there is lack of bhāva at the stage of giving up life. The second statement means that giving up life (mṛtiḥ) should only be an external appearance of death-like symptoms (anubhāvaḥ). This is stated by some--meaning the author. Not satisfied with the description of mṛti given in describing Pūtanā in verse 101, he explains that this is not the same as the mṛti-vyabhicāri-bhāva which appears in devotees.
