Verse Text
akāryeṇa, yathā –
tvam avāg iha mā śiraḥ kṛthā
vadanaṁ ca trapayā śacī-pate |
naya kalpa-taruṁ na cec chacīṁ
katham agre mukham īkṣayiṣyasi ||115||
Translation
Shame arising from doing forbidden actions: O Indra! You should not hang down your head in shame and remain silent. Take the parijāta tree and go. Otherwise how can you show your face to your wife?
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
These are the words of Kṛṣṇa. Śiraḥ avāk means “hanging the head.” Vadanam avāk means “being silent.”
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
The heavenly King, Indra, upon being defeated in his fight with Kṛṣṇa for possession of the pārijāta flower, became very bashful because of his defeat. He was standing before Kṛṣṇa, bowing down his head, when Kṛṣṇa said, “All right, Indra, you can take this pārijāta flower. Otherwise, you will not be able to show your face before your wife, Śacīdevī.” Indra’s bashfulness was due to defeat.
