Verse Text
amaṅgalam api procya nirvedaṁ prathamaṁ muniḥ |
mene ’muṁ sthāyinaṁ śānta iti jalpanti kecana ||13||
Translation
Though it is inauspicious, Bharata Muni has mentioned nirveda as the first vyabhicāri-bhāva, since it is the sthāyi-bhāva for śānta-rasa. This is the opinion of some persons. [Note: This is mentioned again in 3.1.50, in the discussion of śānta-rasa.]
Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
Since nirveda is an inauspicious emotion, why has it been considered first in the list? This verse answers. Bharata Muni has placed it first, considering it to be the sthāyi-bhāva of śānta-rasa. That is, though it appears inauspicious, it is suitable to be placed first because of its prominence as a sthāyi-bhāva as well. In this work it is placed simply to conform to Bharata Muni’s exposition of the subject.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
The author (others) considers the sthāyi-bhāva of śānta-rasa to be śānta-rati. That nirveda is stated first here is merely conforming to Bharata Muni’s exposition of the subject.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
According to Bharata Muni, this disappointment is inauspicious. But there are other learned scholars who have accepted such disappointment as being in the mood of neutrality and as being a preservative of ecstatic love.
