Translation
Bodha arising from destruction of ignorance: Enlightenment occurs after the appearance of knowledge which occurs after removal of ignorance. This enlightenment consists of realization one’s identity with brahman, which destroys unlimited suffering.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
n this verse, bodha means knowledge of self and the Supreme Lord and knowledge of the non-difference of the two which is called vidyā. The sādhana for realization of these three items consists of nididhyāsana or contemplation. After contemplation, there is destruction of avidyā, and then knowledge of the two. Finally, there is knowledge of the non-difference of the two. The bodha which arises from destruction of ignorance (avidyā-dvaṁsataḥ) comes after (puraḥsaraḥ) the appearance of knowledge (vidyodaya). In this bodha, there is destruction of unlimited kleśas and realization of non-difference (svarūpāvagama). The word ādi indicates that there is realization of bhakti as well in the state of bodha. This type of bodha is an assistant to bhakti for some persons, and therefore is considered a vyabhicāri-bhāva. This is the meaning of the verse brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā in the Gītā (18.54).
