Verse Text

sākṣād-rater na sambandhaḥ ṣaḍbhis trāsādibhiḥ saha | syāt parasparayā kintu līlānuguṇatākṛte ||203||

Translation

Rati has no direct relationship with the six vyabhicāri-bhāvas just mentioned. Rati has a relationship with them only because they support rati for encouraging pastimes.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

The six bhāvas just mentioned never arise in relationship to Kṛṣṇa in those possessing rati, since He is experienced only through the pleasant nature in the rati. They arise through obstacles to their rati, being experienced by the devotees in those conditions alone. Harṣa and other positive emotions arise with Kṛṣṇa as the direct cause (vibhāva). Trāsa etc. do not arise in this way. Thus the verse states that there is no relationship with rati directly in the manifestation of these six vyabhicāri bhāvas, since they arise only when there are obstacles to rati. But they will have a relationship with rati, in the sense that they mix together with rati (parasparayā), since these bhāvas arise when there are obstacles to the rati. Mention of six vyabhicāri-bhāvas should also include other vyabhicāri-bhāvas such as fear. These occur only when there are acts such as offense against the Lord.
