Verse Text

bhāvajṣai rati-śūnyaś ca raty-anusparśanas tathā | rati-gandhiś ca te tredhā svatantrāḥ parikīrtitāḥ ||217||

Translation

Those knowledgeable of rati divide the independent vyabhicāri-bhāvas into three types: devoid of genuine rati, influenced by genuine rati and having a trace of rati.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Among the independent vyabhicāri-bhāvas, independence is manifested clearly in the first type (being devoid of rati). [Note: Rati-śūnya-vyabhicāri-bhāva is the most independent. It is equivalent to raty-ābhāsa-bhava-sāttvika-bhāva. Raty-anusparśana-vyabhicāri-bhāva is equivalent to digdha-sāttvika-bhāva.] In the other two types of independent vyabhicāri-bhāvas (a touch of rati or contact with rati), the same term “independence” is applied. However, they are somewhat dependent and this is expressed by the word kvacid “somewhat” in verse 216. Kara-graha means marriage or receiving taxes. There will more involvement with the son-in-law than the king at the time of marriage because he has to take care of the needs of the son-in-law.
