yathā –
pītāṁśukaṁ paricinomi dhṛtaṁ tvayāṅge
saṅgopanāya na hi naptri vidhehi yatnam |
ity āryayā nigaditā namitottamāṅgā
rādhāvaguṇṭhita-mukhī tarasā tadāsīt ||
atra lajjā | ||223||
Translation
Bashfulness: “O my daughter! I know why you are wearing that yellow cloth on your body. Do not try to hide from me (your attraction for Kṛṣṇa).” When Mukharā told this to Rādhā, Rādhā quickly hung her head and covered her face with the edge of her cloth to hide her shame.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Mukharā’s inferred Rādhā’s longing for Kṛṣṇa by her display of great passion. Since her secret had been revealed, Rādhā tried to conceal her shame (vyabhicāri-bhāva). A trace of rati can be detected in Rādhā’s action. Rādhā’s great attraction for Kṛṣṇa causes her transgressing the rules of dharma, which caused Mukharā to make her statement, which caused Rādhā’s shame. (Thus Rādhā’s shame directed towards Mukharā is caused by her rati for Kṛṣṇa. The shame is independent, being directly caused by Mukharā’s accusations, but showing a trace of rati, since madhura-rati is the indirect cause of the incident.) [Note: In the case of raty-anusparśana, rati as a cause is more indirect, being a general cause because the devotee always has rati for Kṛṣṇa.]
