kintu suṣṭhu mahiṣṭhatvaṁ bhāvo bāḍham upāgataḥ |
sarva-prakāram evedaṁ cittaṁ vikṣobhayaty alam ||269||
Translation
But when the principal sthāyi-bhāva becomes very prominent, all types of hearts become completely disturbed by the vyabhicāri-bhāvas.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
“There may not be disturbance of the heart from vyabhicāri-bhāvas in persons who are gariṣṭha, and in the thunderbolt heart there is no softness at all. It has also been said that melting of the heart is created by the sthāyi-bhāva alone. How then can such a heart be considered a devotee heart at all?” This verse answers the question. Bhāva here indicates a sthāyi-bhāva which has become the principal sthāyi-bhāva of an individual, while the others become incidental. Just as by application of special chemicals diamonds become soft, so all types of hearts also become soft by a very prominent sthāyi-bhāva.

On the whole, the heart in any of the different conditions mentioned above can be melted under certain circumstances, just as a hard diamond is sometimes melted by a combination of certain chemicals.
