gātrotkampī manaḥ-kampaḥ sahasā trāsa ucyate |
pūrvāpara-vicārotthaṁ bhayaṁ trāsāt pṛthag bhavet ||58||
Translation
Disturbance of the heart which suddenly produces shaking of the limbs is called trāsa. This is different from fear. Fear arises after deliberating on previous and subsequent events.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
This verse distinguishes trāsa from fear (bhaya). Manaḥ-kṣobha means the same as hṛt-kṣobha mentioned earlier in relation to trāsa. Trāsa occurs without any consideration of connections (sahasā). According to Amara-kośa, sahasā can mean “without consideration.” Therefore, if there is disturbance of the mind and shaking of the limbs without any consideration or thought, it is called trāsa. Fear or bhaya arises after consideration. Instead of vicārottham, vicārotthe is also seen in some texts. If there is disturbance of the mind after consideration, it is called fear. Therefore, it is different from trāsa.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
This kind of fear is a little different from being actually afraid. When one is afraid of something, he can still think of past and future. But when there is this kind of ecstatic apprehension, there is no scope for such thinking.
