aviruddhān viruddhāṁś ca bhāvān yo vaśatāṁ nayan |
su-rājeva virājeta sa sthāyī bhāva ucyate ||1||
Translation
That bhāva which, controlling other favorable bhāvas such as hāsya and contradictory bhāvas such as krodha, presides in the manner of an efficient ruler, is called the sthāyi-bhāva.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
The non-contradictory bhāvas (aviruddhān) are those such as hāsya-rati (laughter) and the contradictory bhāvas are those such as krodha-rati (anger). The bhāva which rules over all these bhāvas is called the sthāyi-bhāva or permanent bhāva.
