Verse Text

tatra svārthā – aviruddhaiḥ sphuṭaṁ bhāvaiḥ puṣṇāty ātmānam eva yā | viruddhair duḥkha-glāniḥ sā svārthā kathitā ratiḥ ||4||

Translation

That primary rati which clearly nourishes itself with non-contradictory bhāvas and becomes intolerably depressed with sorrow by contradictory bhāvas is called the svārtha-rati (nourishing itself).

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

When noncontradictory symptoms of ecstatic love are distinctly manifest, any contradictory symptoms create a sense of abomination. Contradictory ecstatic love is called selfish.
