aviruddhair api spṛṣṭā bhāvaiḥ saṣcāriṇo ’khilāḥ |
nirvedādyā vilīyante nārhanti sthāyitāṁ tataḥ ||48||
Translation
Because all the thirty-three vyabhicāri-bhāvas starting with nirveda, though not contaminated with hostile emotions, disappear on their own after some time in the devotees, they are not classed as sthāyi-bhāvas.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Aviruddhair api spṛṣṭā bhāvaih means literally “touched by non-contrary bhāvas.” However, the meaning is actually “not touched by contrary bhāvas (hostility)” since the previous subject was hostility. It is similar in usage to the phrase asūryampaśyā (king’s wife). That literally means one who sees (paśyā) no sun (asūryam), but really means one who does not see the sun, since the queen is confined to the inner chambers of the palace. These vyabhicāri-bhāvas disappear on their own with the passage of time. [Note: The secondary rasas also disappear after some time by being covered by contrary bhāvas, but verse 51 explains that the secondary ratis leave impressions after they disappear, whereas the vyabhicāri-bhāvas do not leave impressions.]
