Verse Text

cet svatantrās trayas-triṁśad bhaveyur vyabhicāriṇaḥ | ihāṣṭau sāttvikāś caite bhāvākhyās tān asaṅkhyakāḥ ||74||

Translation

If they remain independent, then the thirty-three vyabhicāri-bhāvas, the eight ratis mentioned above and the eight sāttvika-bhāvas are called forty-nine bhāvas or emotional states.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

If these bhāvas do not attain the nature of rasa by serving the sthāyi-bhāva and thus remain independent, then they are considered to be the thirty-three vyabhicāri-bhāvas, the eight sāttvika-bhāvas and the eight ratis. Tān means the total of forty-nine bhāvas.
