Verse Text

pādābja-tulasī-gandhaḥ śaṅkha-nādo mura-dviṣaḥ | puṇya-śailaḥ śubhāraṇyaṁ siddha-kṣetraṁ svarāpagā ||21|| viṣayādi-kṣayiṣṇutvaṁ kālasyākhila-hāritā | ityādy uddīpanā sādhāraṇās teṣāṁ kilāśritaiḥ ||22||

Translation

The incomparable fragrance of the tulasī at the feet of the Lord, the sound of the Lord’s conch, holy mountains, holy forests, holy places, the Gaṅgā, the temporary nature of things of this world, the power of time to destroy everything are stimuli common for the dāsa-bhaktas as well as the śānta-bhaktas.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

The fragrance of tulasī, the sound of the conch and the Gaṅgā are stimuli for both the performers of austerities and the ātmārāmas. The rest are stimuli for the performers of austerity. These items are also stimuli for the dāsa-bhaktas called āśritas (āśritaiḥ). [Note: The āśritas are decribed in 3.2.21] Svarāpagā means the Gaṅgā, the river from heaven.

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

Those who are situated on the platform of śānta-rasa get their impetus for advancement in devotional service by smelling the tulasī offered at the lotus feet of the Lord, by hearing the sound of His conchshell, by seeing a sanctified place in some mountain or hill, by observing a forest like the ones in Vṛndāvana, by going to a place of pilgrimage, by visiting the course of the Ganges River, by being victorious over the dictations of bodily demands (i.e., eating, sleeping, mating and defending), by understanding the devastation of eternal time and by constantly associating with devotees engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. All these different items are favorable in elevating saintly persons situated in śānta-rasa to the advanced stage of devotional service.
