Verse Text
vrajādhīśasya rūpaṁ, yathā –
tila-taṇḍulitaiḥ kacaiḥ sphurantaṁ
nava-bhāṇḍīra-palāśa-cāru-celam |
ati-tundilam indu-kānti-bhājaṁ
vraja-rājaṁ vara-kūrcam arcayāmi ||15||
Translation
Nanda’s form: I worship Nanda, the corpulent king of Vraja, who has a mixture of white and black hair on his head, an attractive beard as white as moon, and clothing the color of a new banyan leaf.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Tila-taṇḍulitaiḥ (sesame and rice) means his hair was a combination of black and white. Atitundilam means that Nanda was bulky, but in a praiseworthy way. Ati in the context does not mean excessively fat, but rather praiseworthy, according to Viśva-kośa. Viśva-kośa also says: kūrco vikatthane madhye bhruvoḥ śmaśruṇi kaitave: kūrca means false praise, the area between the eye brows, a beard, and a cheater.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
The description of Nanda Mahārāja’s bodily features is as follows. The hairs on his head are generally black, but some of them are gray. His garments are of greenish color, like the new-grown leaves of a banyan tree. His belly is fatty, his complexion is exactly like the full moon, and he has a beautiful mustache.
