Verse Text
yaśodādes tu vātsalya-ratiḥ prauḍhā nisargataḥ |
premavat snehavad bhāti kadācit kila rāgavat ||53||
Translation
The vatsala-rati of Yaśodā and others is at the stage of very intense rāga by its very nature. Just as other ratis gradually increase to prema, and then sneha, sometimes vatsala-rati also appears externally to increase to prema, sneha and rāga, but internally it is always on the level of rāga.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Yaśodādeḥ indicates Yaśodā and other elders with vatsala-rasa. Yaśodā’s rati is naturally deep (prauḍhā). But other types of devotees also have deep rati. Therefore, prauḍhā here indicates that vatsala-rati is constituted of the highest stage of rāga. This rati appears (bhāti) to go through the stages of prema, sneha and rāga. However, internally it is always deep, being rāga. [Note: There is no praṇaya in vatsala rasa, since the elders can never think of Kṛṣṇa as being equal to themselves.]
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
The parental love of Mother Yaśodā for Kṛṣṇa steadily increases, and her love and ecstasy are sometimes described as intense affection and sometimes as overwhelming attachment.
