nirvedaḥ –
dhig astu hata-jīvitaṁ niravadhi-śriyo ’py adya me
yayā na hi hareḥ śiraḥ snuta-kucāgram āghrāyate |
sadā nava-sudhā-duhām api gavāṁ parārdhaṁ ca dhik
sa luṣcati na caṣcalaḥ surabhi-gandhi yāsāṁ dadhi ||67||
Translation
Nirveda (self-disgust): What an unfortunate life, in spite of all unlimited wealth, for I did not smell Kṛṣṇa’s head while milk flows from my breast. How unfortunate are the millions of cows which give continual milk like fresh nectar, for fickle Kṛṣṇa does not steal their fragrant yogurt?
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
These are words uttered in parental affection out of unsteadiness of mind in thinking of separation from Kṛṣṇa. Thus, the person states that Kṛṣṇa does not steal, using the present tense. This version with sadā nava-sudhā-duhām etc. intensifies the sense of misfortune.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
Similarly, Mother Yaśodā felt frustration when she thought, “Although I have millions of cows, the milk of these cows could not satisfy Kṛṣṇa. Therefore let a curse be on this milk! And I also am condemned, because although I am so opulent in material prosperity, I am now unable to smell the head of my child and feed Him with my breast milk as I used to do when He was here in Vṛndāvana.” This is a sign of frustration on the part of Mother Yaśodā in separation from Kṛṣṇa.
