atha guravaḥ –
adhikaṁ-manya-bhāvena śikṣā-kāritayāpi ca |
lālakatvādināpy atra vibhāvā guravo matāḥ ||8||
Translation
The elders (āśraya): The elders become vibhāva of vatsala-rasa by thinking themselves greater than Kṛṣṇa, protecting Him and teaching Him.

The instrumental case is used in describing the elders to emphasize their specific qualities.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
This kind of parental love is generated in a devotee out of his conviction, in love, that he himself is superior to Kṛṣṇa and that without being taken care of by such a devotee Kṛṣṇa could not possibly live.
