Verse Text
yathā –
dadāmi dadhi-phāṇitaṁ vivṛṇu vaktram ity agrato
niśamya jaratī-giraṁ vivṛta-komalauṣṭhe sthite |
tayā kusumam arpitaṁ navam avetya bhugnānane
harau jahasur uddhuraṁ kim api suṣṭhu goṣṭhārbhakāḥ ||10||
Translation
Devotee as ālambana: “Open Your mouth. I will give you some yogurt mixed with sugar.” Hearing the words of the old woman, when Kṛṣṇa opened His tender lips, she put a fresh flower in His mouth. Tasting the bitterness, He puckered His mouth. The young cowherd boys laughed loudly. [Note: The cowherd boys experience hāsya-rasa concerning Kṛṣṇa.]
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Phāṇita is type of sugar. Dadhi-phāṇitam is sugar mixed with yogurt. With the mention of komalauṣṭhe, tender lips, it is understood that Kṛṣṇa was a small child.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
Once one of Kṛṣṇa’s friends informed Him, “My dear Kṛṣṇa, if You will open Your mouth, then I shall give You one nice sugar candy mixed with yogurt.” Kṛṣṇa immediately opened His mouth, but instead of giving Him sugar candy with yogurt, the friend dropped a flower in His mouth. After tasting this flower, Kṛṣṇa turned His mouth in a disfigured way, and upon seeing this all His friends standing there began to laugh very loudly.
