tatra smitam –
smitaṁ tv alakṣya-daśanaṁ netra-gaṇḍa-vikāśa-kṛt ||16||
Translation
When the teeth are not seen and the eyes and cheeks become joyful it is called smita (slight smile).
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
When one is smiling but his teeth are not visible, one can distinctly mark a definite change in the eyes and in the cheeks. This is called smita smiling.
