Verse Text
tatra kṛṣṇo, yathā –
yāsyāmy asya na bhīṣaṇasya savidhaṁ jīrṇasya śīrṇākṛter
mātar neṣyati māṁ pidhāya kapaṭād ādhārikāyām asau |
ity uktvā cakitākṣam adbhuta-śiśāv udvīkṣyamāṇe harau
hāsyaṁ tasya niruddhato ’py atitarāṁ vyaktaṁ tadāsīn muneḥ ||8||
Translation
Kṛṣṇa as ālambana: “O mother! I will not go towards the frightful, old withered person! He will craftily put Me in his begging bag.” When Nārada saw baby Kṛṣṇa with frightened eyes say this, though he tried to suppress his laughter, he could not do so. [Note: Thus the whole event is the subject of Nārada’s laughter, not Kṛṣṇa alone, but the laughter centers on Kṛṣṇa, and He is the cause. In that sense He is the viṣaya.]
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
Once an old mendicant approached the door of Mother Yaśodā’s house, and Kṛṣṇa told Yaśodā, “My dear mother, I don’t wish to go near this skinny villain. If I go there, he might put Me within his begging bag and take Me away from you!” In this way, the wonderful child, Kṛṣṇa, began to look at His mother, while the mendicant, who was standing in the door, tried to hide his smiling face, although he could not do so. He immediately expressed his smiling. In this instance, Kṛṣṇa Himself is the object of laughing affairs.
