Verse Text

apriyādeḥ kriyā kuryān nālaukiky api vismayam | asādhāraṇy api manāk karoty eva priyasya sā ||12||

Translation

When an unloved person performs extraordinary actions, it is not astonishing, but when a loved one performs actions even a little uncommon, they produce astonishment.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Having said that adbhuta-rasa will manifest completely only in relation to Kṛṣṇa, the author establishes that all rasas possess some vismaya-rati. This is expressed in two verses. Thus, it is said: rase sāraś camatkāraḥ sarvatrāpīṣyate budhaiḥ tasmād adbhutam evāha kṛtī nārāyaṇo rasam In rasa, the essence is said to be astonishment by the wise. Therefore, adbhuta-rasa is said to be fully expressed in the Supreme Lord Nārāyaṇa. (from a work by Dharmadatta, quoted in Sāhitya-darpaṇa) In the verse, the order of the words should be manag api asādhārani (even a little uncommon).

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

The activities of a person, even if they are not very extraordinary, create an impression of wonder in the heart and mind of the person’s friends. But even very wonderful activities performed by a person who is not one’s friend will not create any impression.
