Verse Text
sahāyena sahajotsāha-ratir, yathā –
saṅgrāma-kāmuka-bhujaḥ svayam eva kāmaṁ
dāmodarasya vijayāya kṛtī sudāmā |
sāhāyyam atra subalaḥ kurute balī cej
jāto maṇiḥ sujaṭito vara-hāṭakena ||23||
Translation
Natural enthusiasm for battle, with additional encouragement: Expert Sudāma with arms eager for battle had sufficient strength to conquer Kṛṣṇa in combat. If he were to take the help of strong Subala, he would be like a jewel set in gold.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Jaṭ or jhaṭ means “to combine with.” Sujaṭita is the past participle form means “combined together very well.” Instead of sujaṭitaḥ sometimes jaṭilita is found, but this is not so acceptable. Jaṭila is formed in a group of words called picchādi which add the suffix “la” to mean “possessing.” Thus, from jāta comes jaṭila, meaning jaṭāvat (having shaggy locks of hair). (Pāṇini 5.2.100) This is inappropriate in the context.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
One of the friends once remarked, “Sudāmā is trying his best to see Dāmodara defeated, and I think that if our powerful Subala joins him, they will be a very beautiful combination, like a valuable jewel bedecked with gold.”
