Verse Text

yathā – uttiṣṭha mūḍha kuru mā vilambaṁ vṛthaiva dhik paṇḍita-māninī tvam | truṭyat-palāśi-dvayam antarā te baddhaḥ suto ’sau sakhi bambhramīti ||10||

Translation

An example: Oh! You have fainted! Get up, and do not delay uselessly. You think yourself so skilful in teaching your son! O friend! Your bound-up son is moving between the two broken arjuna trees.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Paṇḍita-māninī (thinking yourself learned) here means “you think you know how to train your son.” Truṭyat means “is being broken.” Though the breaking took place in the past, the present tense is used. There is a rule vartamāna-sāmīpye vartamānavat vā: affixes applied for the present tense can be used to indicate action of the past or future not remote from the present (Pāṇini 3.3.131). Rohiṇī had gone with Balarāma to the house of Upananda on invitation on that day. On hearing the sound of the breaking trees, Rohiṇī came to the spot. Seeing that Nanda and others had come there for Kṛṣṇa, she entered Yaśodā’s house. These are words of Rohiṇī on entering the house and seeing Yaśodā just getting up after fainting from fear when she heard the sound of the falling trees.

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

Similar ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa in anger was expressed by Rohiṇī-devī when she heard the roaring sound of the two falling arjuna trees to which Kṛṣṇa had been tied. The whole neighborhood proceeded immediately toward the place where the accident had taken place, and Rohiṇī-devī took the opportunity to rebuke Mother Yaśodā as follows: “You may be very expert in giving lessons to your son by binding Him with rope, but don’t you look to see if your son is in a dangerous spot? The trees are falling on the ground, and He is simply loitering there!” This expression of Rohiṇī-devī’s anger toward Yaśodā is an example of ecstatic love in anger caused by Kṛṣṇa.
