Verse Text
bhayānakasya bībhatsaḥ karuṇaś ca suhṛd-varaḥ |
dviṣantu vīra-śṛṅgāra-hāsya-raudrāḥ prakīrtitāḥ ||13||
Translation
Bībhatsa and karuṇa-rasa are favorable for bhayānaka-rasa. Vīra, madhura, hāsya and raudra are unfavorable.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Karuṇa-rasa nourishes fear by thinking of future separation from the lover and the consequent suffering. Vīra, madhura, hāsya and raudra-rasas are unfavorable for nourishing fear when manifested in the person experiencing fear.

With the ecstasy of dread in devotional service a mixture of ghastliness or compassion is compatible.
With the ecstasy of chivalry in devotional service a mixture of conjugal union, laughter or anger is always incompatible.
