dvayos tu miśraṇe sāmyaṁ duḥśakaṁ syāt tulā-dhṛtam |
tasmād aṅgāṅgi-bhāvena melanaṁ viduṣāṁ matam ||17||
Translation
When two rasas mix, they cannot be experienced equally. Thus, the wise have said that there is a mixture of a predominant rasa (aṅgī) and subsidiary rasas (aṅgas).

The two parts of the verse should be read together. If two rasas appear, it is impossible that they can be experienced in an absolutely equal way. Therefore, they can be experienced at one time (melanam) only if one is predominant and the others are subsidiary.

Expert literary scholars have analyzed the rasas which are compatible with one another by contrasting the various rasas in a particular mixture under the names whole and part. According to this method, the prominent feeling is called the whole, and the subordinate feeling is called the part.
