Verse Text
tatraiva śucihāsyayor, yathā –
mihira-duhitur udyad-vaṣjulaṁ maṣju-tīraṁ
praviśati subalo ’yaṁ rādhikā-veṣa-gūḍhaḥ |
sa-rabhasam abhipaśyan kṛṣṇam abhyutthitaṁ yaḥ
smita-vikaśita-gaṇḍaṁ svīyam āsyaṁ vṛṇoti ||
atra mukhye mukhya-gauṇayoḥ | ||28||
Translation
An example with sakhya-rasa (primary) as aṅgī and madhura (primary) and hāsya (secondary) as aṅgas: Subala, disguised in Rādhā’s clothing, came to the attractive bank of the Yamunā River with blossoming aśoka trees. When he saw Kṛṣṇa rise up with great joy in order to touch himself disguised as Rādhā, he covered his face with cheeks breaking into a smile.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Vṛṇoti means “he covered.” Amara-kośa says: prācīraṁ prāntato vṛtiḥ: vṛtiḥ means a fence or enclosure.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
The following example contains a mixture of ecstatic fraternity and laughter, taken respectively as the whole and part. When Kṛṣṇa saw that Subala, in the dress of Rādhārāṇī, was silently hiding under the shade of a beautiful aśoka tree on the bank of the Yamunā, He immediately arose from His seat in surprise. Upon seeing Kṛṣṇa, Subala tried to hide his laughter by covering his cheeks.
