Verse Text
dviṣann asya śucir yuddhavīro raudro bhayānakaḥ ||3||
Translation
Madhura-rasa and yuddha-vīra-rasa are the enemies of both types of śānta-rasa. Raudra-rasa and bhayānaka-rasa are the enemies of ātmārāma-śānta-rasa, and raudra-rasa is an enemy of tapasvī-śānta-rasa.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Bhayānaka-rasa is not an enemy for tapasvī-śānta-rasa, since that type of śānta-rasa is nourished by the appearance of fear related to repeated birth, generated from seeing the ferocity of Yama (punisher after death) and others. But raudra-rasa, if experienced within himself, is an enemy of his śānta-rasa. [Note: Experiencing anger towards anyone disturbing his peace.]
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
When with this neutral love there are manifestations of conjugal love, chivalry, anger or dread, the result is incompatible.
