Verse Text
aṅgī mukhyaḥ svam atrāṅgair bhāvais tair abhivardhayan |
sajātīyair vijātīyaiḥ svatantraḥ san virājate ||49||
Translation
In a combination of rasas, the primary rasa which is main aṅgī-rasa, by strengthening itself through supportive bhāvas, which may be of the same variety or differing (but not enemies), remains independent.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
The correct version is svam atrāṅgaiḥ. Vijātīyaiḥ means “by differing rasas, but not the enemies which were previously mentioned.” [Note: This means friendly rasas, primary or secondary. Sajātiyaiḥ refers to other bhāvas connected with the same rasa.]
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
… although its actual position is as the main or prominent loving feeling of a devotee.
When an unconstitutional ecstasy of devotional service is manifested prominently at a certain time, it is still accepted as the part. If it is not very prominently manifested, it appears only slightly and merges quickly back into the whole.
