Verse Text
vatsalasya suhṛd-dhāsyaḥ karuṇo bhīṣma-bhit tathā |
śatruḥ śucir yuddha-vīraḥ prīto raudraś ca pūrvavat ||6||
Translation
Hāsya, karuṇa and bhayānaka-rasa are the friends of vatsala-rasa. Madhura, yuddha-vīra, dāsya and raudra-rasas directed to Kṛṣṇa are the enemies of vatsala-rasa.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Hāsya-rasa and karuṇa-rasa, manifested in the vatsala-rasa-bhakta, in Kṛṣṇa and in other devotees, is favorable to vatsala-rasa. Bhayānaka-rasa caused by enemies is also favorable. Madhura-rasa manifested in all types of persons is unfavorable for vatsala-rasa. Yuddha-vīra-rasa and raudra-rasa exchanged between Kṛṣṇa and the vatsala-bhakta are unfavorable. [Note: The competitive spirit of yuddha-vīra-rasa or mutual hostility would destroy the relationship of parents protecting their son. However if the parents see Kṛṣṇa competing with his friends there is no obstacle to their parental affection. The parents may show anger, but it would be a show only, in which case Kṛṣṇa acts fearful. Kṛṣṇa may make a show of anger, in which case the parents act remorseful.] Dāsya also directed towards Kṛṣṇa is unfavorable in the vatsala-rasa-bhakta. [Note: In dāsya-rasa the devotee looks to the Lord as his master, and in vatsala-rasa the devotee sees the Lord as his dependent.] Pūrvavat indicates “directed towards Kṛṣṇa,” as in the previous verse.
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
Although there are gulfs of differences between them, with the ecstasy of parental affection a mixture of laughter, compassion or dread is compatible.
With the ecstasy of parental love a mixture of conjugal love, chivalry or anger is incompatible.
