śucer hāsyas tathā preyān suhṛd asya prakīrtitaḥ |
dviṣo vatsala-bībhatsa-śānta-raudra-bhayānakāḥ |
prāhur eke ’sya suhṛdaṁ vīra-yugmaṁ pare ripum ||7||
Translation
Hāsya and sakhya-rasa are the friends of madhura-rasa. Vatsala, bībhatsa, śānta, raudra and bhayānaka-rasas are the enemies of madhura-rasa. Some say that yuddha-vīra and dharma-vīra-rasas are friends of madhura-rasa, though others say those two are enemies of madhura-rasa.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Hāsya and sakhya-rasa in the madhura-rasa devotee and expressed in Kṛṣṇa are favorable for that devotee’s madhura-rasa. Śānta-rasa manifested in the madhura-rasa devotee and in Kṛṣṇa is unfavorable for madhura-rasa. Hāsya and sakhya are favorable to some degree when displayed in other devotees, specifically the sakhīs. Vatsala-rasa manifested in the madhura-rasa devotee, in Kṛṣṇa and in other devotees, is unfavorable for the devotee’s madhura-rasa. Bībhatsa-rasa is unfavorable when manifested in all five types of persons (the devotee, Kṛṣṇa, other devotees, neutrals and enemies). Raudra and bhayānaka-rasas are unfavorable generally when manifested in all five types of persons. Some say that yuddha-vīra and dharma-vīra-rasas (vīra-yugmam) are favorable in the devotee, in Kṛṣṇa and in other devotees. Others say that those two rasas are unfavorable, though this is not the author’s opinion.

With the ecstasy of devotion in conjugal love a mixture of laughter or fraternity is compatible.
According to certain expert opinions, in the ecstasy of conjugal love the feelings of chivalry known as yuddha-vīra and dharma-vīra are the only compatible additions. According to this view, except for these two humors, all other manifestations are taken as incompatible with conjugal love.
