Verse Text
adbhutasya suhṛd vīraḥ paṣca śāntādayas tathā |
pratipakṣo bhaved asya raudro bībhatsa eva ca ||9||
Translation
The five primary rasas and vīra-rasa are favorable for adbhuta-rasa. Raudra and bībhatsa are unfavorable.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Here it is stated that the experience of raudra and bībhatsa obstruct the astonishment caused by experiencing something unusual (adbhuta-rasa). This however does not rule out the fact that feelings of anger or disgust in rasa are also causes for astonishment; for it is said rase sāraś camatkāraḥ: the essence of rasa (any rasa) is astonishment. [Note: rase sāraś camatkāraḥ sarvatrāpy anubhūyate | tac-camatkāra-sāratve sarvatrāpy adbhuto rasaḥ | tasmād adbhutam evāha kṛtī nārāyaṇo rasam || This is from a work of Dharmadatta, quoted in Sāhitya-darpaṇa.]
Purport (Nectar of Devotion)
With the ecstasy of devotion in astonishment a mixture of chivalry or neutral love is compatible, whereas a mixture of anger or dread is always incompatible.
