Chapter Twenty-one Dāvāgni-moksa-vipra-patni-darcana Lord Krsna Extinguishes the Forest Fire and Reveals Himself to the Brāhmana's Wives

cri-nārada uvāca atha kriḍā-prasaktesu gopesu sa-balesu ca trna-lobhena vivicur gāvaḥ sarvāḥ mahad vanam

Translation

cri-nārada uvāca - Sri Nārada said; atha - then; kriḍā-prasaktesu - intent on playing; gopesu - when the gopas; sa-balesu - with Balarāma; ca - amd; trna-lobhena - eager for grass; vivicuḥ - entered; gāvaḥ - the cows; sarvāḥ - all; mahat - the great; vanam - forest. Sri Nārada said: As Balarāma and the gopas intently played, all the cows, hungry for more grass, went far into the forest.

tā ānetum gopa-bālāḥ prāpta munjātavim parām sambhutas tatra dāvāgniḥ pralayāgni-samo mahān

Translation

tāḥ - them; ānetum - to bring back; gopa-bālāḥ - the gopa boyas; prāpta - attained; mu 24jātavim - Munjatavi forest; parām - great; sambhutaḥ - manifested; tatra - there; dāvāgniḥ - a forest fire; pralayāgni-samaḥ - like the fire at the time of cosmic anihilation; mahān - great. When to bring them back the gopa boys went to Mu 24jātavi forest, a great forest fire, like the fire at the end of the universe, suddenly flared up.

gobhir gopāḥ sametās te cri-krsnam sa-balam harim vadantaḥ pāhi pāhiti bhayārtāḥ caranam gatāḥ

Translation

gobhiḥ - the cows; gopāḥ - the gopas; sametāḥ - with; te - they; cri-krsnam - to Sri Krsna; sa-balam - and Balarāma; harim - Lord Krsna; vadantaḥ - saying; pāhi - save!; pāhiti - save!; bhayārtāḥ - frightened; caranam - shelter; gatāh - went. Followed by the cows, and calling out "Save us! Save us!", the frightened gopas took shelter of Krsna and Balarāma.

viksya vahni-bhayam svānām krsno yogecvarecvaraḥ nyamilayata mā bhaista locananānity abhāsata

Translation

viksya - seeing; vahni - of the fire; bhayam - the fear; svānām - of His devotees; krsnaḥ - Krsna; yogecvarecvaraḥ - the master of yoga; nyamilayata - close; mā - don't; bhaista - fear; locananāni - eyes; iti - thus; abhāsata - said. Seeing that His friends were afraid of the fire, Krsna, the master of all yoga powers, said to them, "Close your eyes. Don't be afraid."

tathā-bhutesu gopesu tam agnim bhaya-kārakam apibad bhagavān devo devānām pacyatām nrpa

Translation

tathā-bhutesu - doing that; gopesu - the gopas; tam - that; agnim - fire; bhaya-kārakam - terrifying; apibat - drank; bhagavān - the Lord; devaḥ - the master; devānām - of the dmeigods; pacyatām - looking on; nrpa - O king. As the gopas closed their eyes and the demigods looked on, Lord Krsna drank up that terrifying fire.

evam pitvā mahā-vahnim nitvā gopāla-go-ganam prāpto 'bhud yamunā-pāre cubhācoka-vane hariḥ

Translation

evam - thus; pitvā - having drunk; mahā-vahnim - the great fire; nitvā - bringing; gopāla-go-ganam - the gopsas and cows; prāptaḥ - attained; abhut - was; yamunā-pāre - on the other shore of thr Yamunā; cubha - beautiful; acoka - of asoka trees; vane - in the forest; hariḥ - Lord Krsna. After drinking up the great fire, Lord Krsna took the cows and gopas to a beautiful acoka forest on the Yamunā's farther shore.

tatra ksut-piḍitā gopāḥ cri-krsnam sa-balam harim krtānjali-putā ucuḥ ksudhārtāḥ sma vayam prabho

Translation

tatra - there; ksut-piḍitā - tormented with hunger; gopāḥ - the gopas; cri-krsnam - to Sri Krsna; sa-balam - and Balarāma; harim - Krsna; krtānjali-putā - with folded hands; ucuḥ - said; ksudhārtāḥ - tormented with hunder; sma - indeed; vayam - we are; prabhaḥ - O master. Tormented with hunger, the gopas, respectfully folding their hands said to Krsna and Balarāma, "O Lord, we are tormented with hunger."

tadā tān presayām āsa yajna āggirase hariḥ te gatvā tam yajna-vāram natvocur vimalam vacaḥ

Translation

tadā - then; tān - them; presayām āsa - sent; yajne āggirase - to an angirasa-yajna; hariḥ - Krsna; te - they; gatvā - going; tam - this; yajna-vāram - to the brāhmana assembled for the yajna; natvā - bowing down; ucuḥ - spoke; vimalam - sweet; vacaḥ - words. Lord Krsna sent them to a place where an āggirasa-yaj 24a was being performed. The boys went to the yajna, bowed down before the performers of the yajna, and spoke many sweet words.

cri-gopā ucuḥ gopāla-bālaiḥ sa-balaḥ samāgato gāc cārayan chri-vraja-rāja-nandanaḥ ksut-samyuto 'smai sa-ganāya bhusurāḥ prayacchatācv annam anagga-mohine

Translation

cri-gopā ucuḥ - the gopas said; gopāla-bālaiḥ - with gopa boys; sa-balaḥ - with Balarāma; samāgataḥ - come; gāc - cows; cārayan - herding; cri-vraja-rāja-nandanaḥ - the prince of Vraja; ksut-samyutaḥ - hungry; asmai - to Him; sa-ganāya - and His company; bhusurāḥ - O brāhmanas; prayacchata - please give; ācu - now; annam - food; anagga-mohinemore charming than Kāmadeva. The gopas said: Herding the cows in the company of Balarāma and many gopa boys, Sri Krsna, the prince of Vraja, who is more handsome than Kāmadeva, is now hungry. O brāhmanas, please give some food to Him and His companions.

Translation

cri-nārada uvāca - Sri Nārada said; na - not; ki 24cit - anything; ucuḥ - said; te - they; sarve - all; vacaḥ - words; crutvā - hearing; dvijā - the brāhmanas; nrpa - O king; gopā - the gopas; nirācā - giving up hope; āgatya - returning; ity - thus; ucuḥ - said; sa-balam - with Balarāma; harim - to Lord Krsna. Sri Nārada said: Although they heard these words, the brāhmanas did not say anything in reply. Giving up hope, the gopas returned and told all this to Krsna and Balarāma.

cri-gopā ucuḥ tvam asy adhico vraja-manḍale bali cri-gokule nanda-puro 'gra-danḍa-dhrk na vartate danḍam alam madhoḥ puri pracanḍa-canḍāmsu-mahas tava sphurat

Translation

cri-gopā ucuḥ - the gopas said; tvam - You; asy - are; adhicaḥ - the Lord; vraja-manḍale - in the circle of Vraja; bali - powerful; cri-gokule - in Sri Gokula; nanda-puraḥ - in Nanda-pura; agra-danḍa-dhrk - the right punish others; na - not; vartate - is; danḍam - punishment; alam - enough; madhoḥ puri - in Mathurā; pracanḍa-canḍāmsu-mahaḥ - glorious and powerful as the blazing sun; tava - by You; sphurat - manifested. The gopas said: You are the powerful ruler in the circle of Vraja. In Sri Gokula and in Nandapura You have the right to punish others. In this land of Mathurā You are glorious and powerful and the blazing son. There is not punishment enough that You can give to these people.

cri-nārada uvāca punas tān presayām āsa tat-patnibhyo hariḥ svayam yajna-vātam punar gatvā natvā vipra-priyās tadā krtānjali-putā ucur gopāḥ krsna-pranoditāḥ cri-nārada uvāca - Sri Nārada said; punaḥ - again; tān - them; presayām āsa - sent; tat-patnibhyaḥ - to their wives; hariḥ - Krsna; svayam - personally; yaj 24a-vātam - tp the place of the yajna; punaḥ - again; gatvā - going; natvā - bowing down; vipra-priyāḥ - to the brāhmanas' wives; tadā - then; krtānjali-putā - with folded hands; ucuḥ - said; gopāḥ - the gopas; krsna - by Lord Krsna; pranoditāḥ - sent. Lord Krsna sent them again, this time to the brāhmanas' wives. Arriving at the place of the yajna, the gopas sent by Krsna bowed down before the brāhmanas' wives and, respectfully folding their hands, spoke.

Translation

yathā - as; crutam - heard; tathā - so; drstam - seen; cri-hareḥ - of Sri Krsna; rupam - teh form; adbhutam - wonderful; prāpya - attaining; ānandam - blissed; gatāḥ - attained; sarvāḥ - all; turiyam - the transcendental position; yoginaḥ - yogis; yathā - as. When they saw Lord Krsna's wonderful form, which was just as they had heard it described, they became filled with bliss. They all attained the transcendental platform attained by the greatest yogis.

cri-bhagavān uvāca dhanyā yuyam darcanārtham āgatā he dvijāgganāḥ pratiyāta grhān chighram niḥcagkā bhumi-devatāḥ

Translation

cri-bhagavān uvāca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; dhanya - fortunate; yuyam - you all; darcanārtham - to see; āgatā - come; he - O; dvijāgganāḥ - brāhmana women; pratiyāta - please return; grhān - to your homes; cighram - at once; niḥcagkā - without fear; bhumi-devatāh - - O brāhmanas. The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O brāhmanis, you are all very fortunate to have come here to see Me. Now, without any fear, please return to your homes.

yusmākam tu prabhāvena patayo vo dvijātayaḥ sadyo yajna-phalam prāpya yusmābhiḥ saha nirmalāḥ

Translation

gamisyanti param dhāma golokam prakrteḥ param atha natvā harim sarvā ājagmur yajna-manḍale yusmākam - of you; tu - indeed; prabhāvena - by the power; patayaḥ - husbands; vaḥ - of you; dvijātayaḥ - brāhmanas; sadyaḥ - at once; yajna-phalam - the result of the yajna; prāpya - attaining; yusmābhiḥ - with you all; saha - with; nirmalāḥ - pure; gamisyanti - will go; param - to the supreme; dhāma - abode; golokam - Goloka; prakrteḥ - the material energy; param - above; atha - then; natvā - bowing; harim - to Lord Hari; sarvā - all; ājagmuḥ - returned; yajna-manḍale - to the circle of the yajna. After attaining the result of this yajn, your pure-hearted brāhmana husbands will go, by Your spiritual power, to the supreme abode of Goloka, which is beyond the world of matter. Then all the women offered their respectful obeisances to Lord Krsna and returned to the circle of the yajna.

gamisyanti param dhāma golokam prakrteḥ param atha natvā harim sarvā ājagmur yajna-manḍale yusmākam - of you; tu - indeed; prabhāvena - by the power; patayaḥ - husbands; vaḥ - of you; dvijātayaḥ - brāhmanas; sadyaḥ - at once; yajna-phalam - the result of the yajna; prāpya - attaining; yusmābhiḥ - with you all; saha - with; nirmalāḥ - pure; gamisyanti - will go; param - to the supreme; dhāma - abode; golokam - Goloka; prakrteḥ - the material energy; param - above; atha - then; natvā - bowing; harim - to Lord Hari; sarvā - all; ājagmuḥ - returned; yajna-manḍale - to the circle of the yajna. After attaining the result of this yajn, your pure-hearted brāhmana husbands will go, by Your spiritual power, to the supreme abode of Goloka, which is beyond the world of matter. cri-nārada uvāca - Sri Nārada said; tā - they; drstvā - seeing; brāhmanāḥ - the brāhmanas; sarve - all; svātmānam - to themselves; dhik - rebuke; pracakrire - did; didrksavaḥ - yearning to see; te - they; cri-krsnam - Sri Krsna; kamsāt - of Kamsa; bhitā - afraid; na - not; ca - and; āgatāḥ - went. Sri Nārada said: When they saw their wives, the brāhmanas rebuked themselves. Although they also yearned to see Lord Krsna, out of fear of Kamsa they did not go to see Him.

Translation

bhuktvā - eating; annam - the food; sa-balaḥ - with Balarāma; krsnaḥ - Krsna; gopālaiḥ - with ther gopas; saha - with; maithila - O king of Mithilā; gāḥ - the cows; pālayan - protecting; ājagāma - came; vrndāranyam - to Vrndāvana forest; manoharam - beautiful. O king of Mithilā, when they had finished eating, Krsna, Balarāma, and the gopas took the cows to beautiful Vrndāvana forest. .pa
