śrī-nārada uvāca atha devau rāma-kṛṣṇau devakī-vasudevayoḥ samīpaṁ jagmatuḥ sākṣād vṛṣīnbhiḥ parivāritau śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; atha—then; devau—the two Lords; rāma-kṛṣṇau—Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma; devakī-vasudevayoḥ—of Devakī and Vasudeva; samīpam—near; jagmatuḥ—went; sākṣāt—directly; vṛṣīnbhiḥ—with the Vṛndāvanarsnis; parivāritau—accompanied. Śrī Nārada said: Then, accompanied by the Vṛṣṇis, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead, approached Devakī and Vasudeva.

Translation

O king, seeing their condition, Lord Kṛṣṇa at once untied their bonds, as Garuḍa unties a knotted rope of snakes.

sva-prabhāva-vidau vīkṣya pitarau sa-balo hariḥ sadyas tatāna svāṁ māyāṁ jagan-moha-kariṁ balāt

Synonyms

sva-prabhāva-vidau—aware of His own power; vīkṣya—seeing; pitarau—the parents; sa-balaḥ—with Balarāma; hariḥ—Kṛṣṇa; sadyaḥ—at once; tatāna—expanded; svām—own; māyām—illusion; jagan-moha-karim—which bewilders the universes; balāt—by His power.

Translation

Seeing that Their parents had become aware of Their transcendental power, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma at once bewildered them with His illusory potency, which bewilders all the worlds.

rāma-kṛṣṇau sutau jṣātvā śaurir moha-samākulaḥ devakyā sahasotthāya sasvaje cāśru-pūritaḥ

Translation

Now thinking Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma his own sons, bewildered Vasudeva suddenly stood up. His eyes filled with tears, he and Devakī embraced their two sons.

tāv āśvāsya hariḥ sadyo vṛṣṇibhiḥ parivāritaḥ mātāmahaṁ tūgrasenaṁ cakāra mathurādhipam

Translation

Accompanied by the Vṛṣṇis, Lord Kṛṣṇa consoled His parents. Then He crowned king of Mathurā His maternal grandfather, Ugrasena.

āhūya yādavān kaṁsa- bhayād deśāntaraṁ gatān premṇā nivāsayām āsa sa-kuṭumbān yadoḥ purī

Translation

Calling together the Yādavas that had fled to other countries out of fear of Kaṁsa, Lord Kṛṣṇa affectionaltely gave homes in Mathurā to them and their families.

nanda-rājaṁ gopa-gaṇaiḥ sva-gṛhān gantum udyatam natvā taṁ sa-balaḥ prāha mohayann iva māyayā

Synonyms

nanda-rājam—King Nanda; gopa-gaṇaiḥ—with the gopas; sva-gṛhān—own homes; gantum—to go; udyatam—prepared; natvā—bowing; tam—to him; sa-balaḥ—with Balarāma; prāha—said; mohayann—bewildering; iva—as if; māyayā—with His illusory potency.

Translation

Then, bewildering them with Their illusory potency, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma bowed down before King Nanda and ther gopas, who were now eager to return to theor homes. Kṛṣṇa said to them:

atraiva vāsaṁ kuru tāta puryāṁ gantuṁ yadīcchā manasotthitā syāt paścād ahaṁ vai sa-balo yadūn vā vidhāya pārśvaṁ tava cāgamiṣye

Translation

Father, please stay here in Mathurā for a while. If the desire to leave has risen in your heart, then please return to Vraja. Balarāma and I, with the Yādavas at Our side, will return there after a little while.

Śrī Nārada said: After being worshiped by Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, affectionate King Nanda embraced Vasudeva and then returned with the gopas to Vraja.

Translation

Then Vasudeva gave a million cows, along with many valuable garments and ornaments, in charity to the brāhmaṇas. This was the charity that previously he gave in meditation on the day of Lord Kṛṣṇa's birth.

śaurir gargaṁ samāhūya śrī-kṛṣṇa-baladevayoḥ yajṣopavītaṁ vidhi-vat kārayām āsa dharma-vit

Translation

Then pious Vasudeva called Garga Muni and had him perform the sacred-thread ceremony for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.

Translation

Then, as if They were ordinary boys eager to learn all things, the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, went to the home of Their guru, Sāndīpani Muni.

kṛtvā paraṁ guroḥ sevaṁ laghu-kālena mādhavau sarva-vidyāṁ jagṛhatuḥ sarva-vidyā-vidāṁ varau

Translation

After rendering excellent service to Their guru, in a very short time Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, who were already the best of all-knowing philosophers, became learned in everything.

gurave dakṣiṇāṁ dātuṁ udyatau tau kṛtāṣjalī mṛtaṁ putraṁ dakṣiṇāyāṁ tābhyāṁ vavre gurur dvijaḥ

Translation

When Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma approached with folded hands to offer daksiṇā, Their brāhmaṇa guru chose the return of his dead son as his dakṣiṇā.

ratham āruhya tau dantau śātakumbha-paricchadam prabhāse cābdhi-nikaṭaṁ jagmatur bhīma-vikramau

Translation

Riding in a golden chariot, powerful Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma came to Prabhāsa-kṣetra by the shore of the ocean.

sadyaḥ prakampitaḥ sindhū ratnopāyanam uttamam nītvā tac-caraṇopānte nipapāta kṛtāṣjaliḥ

Translation

At once the deity of the ocean appeared. Trembling, he offered a gift of jewels to Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma and with folded hands fell at Their feet.

tam āha bhagavān śīghraṁ putraṁ dehi guror mama pracaṇḍormi-ghaṭāṭopais tvayā tad-grahaṇaṁ kṛtam

Translation

To him Lord Kṛṣṇa said, "Return at once My guru's son, whom you took with your powerful waves."

Translation

The ocean deity said: O Lord, O master of the demigods, I did not take the boy. The conch-demon Paṣcajana took him.

vasan sadā mad-udare baliṣṭho daitya-puṅgavaḥ jetuṁ yogyas tvayā deva devānāṁ bhaya-kārakaḥ

Translation

O Lord, You are so powerful that You frighten even the demigods. Therefore it is proper that You defeat this very strong demon that always stays in my abdomen.

śrī-nārada uvāca tenokto bhagavān kṛṣṇo vāso baddhvā kaṭau dṛḍham nipapāta mahā-vegāt samudre bhīma-nādini

Śrī Nārada said: When He heard these words, Lord Kṛṣṇa tightened the sash at His waist and dove into the ocean of terrible waves.

Translation

O king of Videha, when Lord Kṛṣṇa dove into it, the ocean, which holds up the three worlds, trembled as if it had been struck by a thunderbolt.

tataḥ paṣcajano daityo yoddhuṁ śrī-kṛṣṇa-sammukhe āgataḥ sahasā vīraḥ śūlaṁ cikṣepa mādhave

Translation

Eager to fight, the ferocious demon Paṣcajana at once came before Lord Kṛṣṇa and threw a spear at Him.

haste gṛhītvā tac-chūlaṁ tenaivābhijaghāna tam tad-ghātena prapatito mūrchito vāri-maṇḍale

Synonyms

haste—in one hand; gṛhītvā—taking; tac-chūlam—that spear; tena—with it; eva—indeed; abhijaghāna—struck; tam—him; tad-ghātena—by that blow; prapatitaḥ—fell; mūrchitaḥ—unconscious; vāri-maṇḍale—in the waters.

Translation

Catching the spear in one hand, Lord Kṛṣṇa threw it back at the demon. Wounded by the spear, the demon fell unconscious into the waters.

sahasotthāya deveśaṁ kiṣcid vyākula-mānasaḥ mūrdhnā tatāḍa pakṣīndraṁ sva-phaṇena phānī yathā

Translation

Suddenly getting up, and now a little agitated at heart, with his head the demon struck Lord Kṛṣṇa as with its hood a snake strikes Garuḍa.

Translation

Now angry, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, ferociously punched the demon on his head.

Translation

O king of Videha, with that punch the demon died. The light from his body then merged into the dark monsoon cloud of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

After killing the demon, Lord Kṛṣṇa took the demon's shell, left the great ocean, and returned to His chariot.

Synonyms

vāyu-vegena—as fast as the wond; yānena—with traveling; rāma-kṛṣṇau—Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma; manoharau—handsome; jagmatuḥ—went; śamanasya—of Yama; api—also; dīrgham—long; samyamanīṁ purīm—Samyamani Puri.

Translation

Traveling as fast as the wind for a long time, glorious Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma came to Samyamanī Purī, the city of Yamarāja.

pāṣcajanya-dhvanir lokaṁ pracaṇḍo megha-ghoṣa-vat pūrayām āsa taṁ śrutvā cakampe sa-sabho yamaḥ

Translation

Blowing the conchshell that had been Pa 241)cajana's outer body, powerful Lord Kṛṣṇa filled the world with a sound like thunder. When they heard it, Yamarāja and his assembly trembled.

catur-aśīti-lakṣeṣu narakeṣu nipātitāḥ yair yaiḥ śrutā dhvanis te te jagmur mokṣaṁ tu pāpinaḥ

Synonyms

catur-aśīti-lakṣeṣu—eight million four hundred thousand; narakeṣu—into the hellish worlds; nipātitāḥ—fallen; yaiḥ yaiḥ—by whomever; śrutā—heard; dhvaniḥ—the sound; te te—they; jagmuḥ—attained; mokṣam—liberation; tu—indeed; pāpinaḥ—sinners.

Translation

Any of the sinners fallen in the eight million four hundred thousand hells there that heard that sound at once attained liberation.

yamaḥ sadyo baliṁ nītvā śrī-kṛṣṇa-baladevayoḥ papāta caraṇopānte dharṣitaḥ san kṛtāṣjaliḥ

Bringing an offering in his folded hands, humble Yamarāja fell down at the feet of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.

Śrī Yamarāja said: O Kṛṣṇa, O ocean of mercy! O Balarāma! O powerful Balarāma! You are the two masters of numberless universes. You are the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead.

Translation

You are the two ancient Supreme Persons, the masters of everything, the rulers of all beings in all the worlds, the two Supreme Lords who stand above all others. Please order me as You wish.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca guru-putraṁ loka-pāla ānayasva mahā-mate rājyaṁ kuru yathānyāyāṁ mad-uktaṁ mānayan kvacit

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O protector of the worlds, O noble-hearted one, bring to Me my guru's son. You should rule your kingdom by obeying My words.

guru—of His guru; āśiṣā—with the blessings; samyutau—endowed; tau—They; natvā—bowing down; tam—to him; hi—indeed; kṛtāṣjalī—with folded hands; ratham—chariot; āruhya—mounting; mathurām—to Mathurā; āgatau—came; yadu-pūjitau—worshiped by the Yādavas.

Translation

After receiving Their guru's blessings, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma bowed before him with folded hands. When, riding a chariot, They returned to Mathurā, the Yādavass greeted Them with honor and worship.

You are the two joys of the worlds, the two ornaments of the people, the two lamps that light up all the universes and the realms beyond the universes. To protect the cows, brāhmaṇas, devotees, demigods, Vedas, and the principles of religion, You have both taken birth in the Yādava dynasty.
