vaiśampāyana uvāca
shambarastu tataḥ kruddho mudgaraṁ taṁ samādade |
mudgare gṛhyamāṇe tu dvādaśārkāḥ samutthitāḥ ||2-107-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then angry shambara took up the hammer. As he took up the hammer, twelve suns rose up in the sky (the brightness of the weapon was equal to that of twelve suns).
parvatāśchalitāḥ sarve tathaiva vasudhātalam |
unmārgāḥ sāgarā yātāḥ saṅkṣubdhāśchapi devatāḥ ||2-107-2
All the mountains as well as the earth shook. All the oceans overflowed. The gods became agitated.
gṛdhracakrākulaṁ vyoma ulkāpāto babhūva ha |
vavarṣa rudhiraṁ devaḥ paruṣaṁ pavano vavau ||2-107-3
Vultures circled in the sky. Many meteors fell. The gods showered blood. The wind blew harsh.
evaṁ dṛṣṭvā mahotpātānpradyumnaḥ sa tvarānvitaḥ |
avatīrya rathādvīraḥ kṛtāṣjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ ||2-107-4
Seeing the terrible fall of meteors, the valiant pradyumna left the chariot and stood folding his hands.
devīṁ sasmāra manasā pārvatīṁ śaṅkarapriyām |
praṇamya śirasā devīṁ stotum samupacakrame ||2-107-5
He remembered the Goddess pārvatī, dear to śaṅkara (shiva), in his mind. He bowed to the Goddess with his head and began to praise her.
pradyumna uvāca
oṁ namaḥ kātyāyanyai girīśāyai namo namaḥ |
namastrailokyamāyāyai kātyāyanyai namo namḥ ||2-107-6
pradyumna said:
I pay obeisance to kātyāyani, Goddess of the mountains. I pay obeisance to the creator of illusions in the three worlds. O kātyāyanī! I pay obeisance to thee.
namaḥ śatruavināśinyai namo gauryai shivapriye |
namasye śumbhamathanīṁ niśumbhamathanīmapi ||2-107-7
I pay obeisance to the destroyer of enemies, gaurī, dear to shiva, the one who oppressed shumbha as well as the one who destroyed nishumbha.
kālarātri namastubhyaṁ kaumāryai ca namo namaḥ |
kāntāravāsinīṁ devīṁ namasyāmi kṛtāṣjaliḥ ||2-107-8
O Goddess of the Dark Night (at the time of praLaya)! I pay obeisance to you! O kaumārī! I pay obeisance to you! O the one who dwellss in the forest! O Goddess! I pay obeisance to you with folded hands.
vindhyavāsinīṁ durgaghnāṁ raṇadurgāṁ raṇapriyām |
namasyāmi mahādevīṁ jayāṁ ca vijayāṁ tathā ||2-107-9
I pay obeisance to the Goddess who lives in the vindhya, Goddess who destroys dangers, raṇadurgā who likes to battle. O great Goddess! O jayā! O vijayā! I pay obeisance to thee.
aparājitāṁ namasye'hamajitāṁ śatrunāśinīm |
ghaṇṭāhastāṁ namasyāmi ghaṇṭāmālākulāṁ tathā || 2-107-10
I pay obeisance to the one who is never defeated, the one who cannot be conquered, the one who destroys the enemies, the one who has a bell in her hand, and the one who has a garland of bells.
triśūlinīṁ namasyāmi mahiṣāsuraghātinīm |
siṁhānanāṁ namasyāmi siṁhapravaraketanām ||2-107-11
I pay obeisance to the one who holds a three pointed spear, the one who killed the demon mahiṣa, I pay obeisance to the one with lion's face and the one who has lion on her flag.
ekānaṁśāṁ namasyāmi gāyatrīm yajṣasatkṛtām |
sāvitrīṁ cāpi viprāṇāṁ namasye'haṁ kṛtāṣjaliḥ ||2-107-12
I pay obeisance to ekānaṁśā, gāyatrī, the one who is facilitated in sacrifices, sāvitrī of the brāhmins with folded hands.
rakṣa māṁ devi satataṁ saṅgrāme vijayaṁ kuru |
O Goddess! protect me always. Always give me victory in battle.
iti kāmavacastuṣṭā durgā saṁprītamānasā ||2-107-13
uvāca vacanaṁ devī suprītenāntarātmanā |
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) The Goddess durgā was pleased with these words of kāma (pradyumna). With a pleased mind and pleased in her soul, the Goddess spoke the following words:
pashya pashya mahābāho rukmiṇyānandavardhana ||2-107-14
varaṁ varaya vatsa tvamamoghaṁ darśanaṁ mama |
O the one with powerful arms! Look at me! O the one who increases the happiness of rukmiṇī! O son! Accept a boon from me! Seeing me is unfailing (productive).
devyāsu vacanam śrutvā romāṣchodgatamānasaḥ ||2-107-15
praṇamya śirasā devīṁ vijṣaptumupacakrame |
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words of the Goddess, pradyumna was thrilled. He bowed to the Goddess with his head and went on to inform her:
yadi tvaṁ devi tuṣṭāsi dīyatāṁ me yadīpsitam ||2-107-16
varaṁ ca varade yāce sarvāmitreṣu me jayaḥ |
(pardyumna said) O Goddess! If you are pleased with me and if you can fulfill my wish, O the one who give boon, I seek the boon of victory against all my enemies.
yastvayā mudgaro dattaḥ śambarasyātmasaṁbhavaḥ ||2-107-17
eṣa me gātramāsādya mālā padmavatī bhavet |
If the hammer born from you and given to shambara strikes my body, it shall become a garland of lotus.
tathāstviti ca sāpyuktvā tatraivāntaradhīyata ||2-107-18
(vaśampāyana continued) The Goddess said: Let it be so and disappeared there.
pradyumnastu mahātejāstuṣṭo rathamathāruhat |
pradyumna of high splendor was pleased. He mounted his chariot.
mudgaraṁ taṁ gṛhītvā ca śambaraḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ ||2-107-19
bhrāmayitvā sa cikṣepa pradyumnorasi vīryavān |
shambara who was charged with anger took up the hammer. Spinning the weapon, the valiant shambara threw it at the chest of pradyumna.
sa gatvā madanābhyāśaṁ mālā bhūtvā tu pauṣkarī ||2-107-20
pradyumnasya ca kaṇṭhe tu samāsaktā vyarājata |
nakṣatrāṇāṁ tu mālāyāṁ yathā parivṛto vidhuḥ ||2-107-21
That reached madana (pradyumna) and became a garland of lotus flowers. It sparkled, adorning the neck of pradyumna, shining like the moon surrounded by a garland of stars.
tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāścha paramarṣayaḥ |
sādhu sādhviti vācocuḥ pūjayankeśavātmajam ||2-107-22
mudgaraṁ puṣpabhūtaṁ tu dṛṣṭvā pradyumnasaṁnidhau |
Then all the deva-s, gandharva-s, siddha-s as well as great sages said: Well done and honoured the son of keshava (pradyumna), seeing the hammer becoming a garland of flowers on the body of pradyumna.
vaiṣṇavaṁ paramāstraṁ tu nāradena yathāhṛtam ||2-107-23
saṁdadhe cāpamānamya idaṁ vacanamabravīt |
Fixing the highly powerful weapon of vaiṣṇava provided by nārada on his bow, pradyumna spoke the following words:
yadyahaṁ rukmiṇīputraḥ keśavasyātmajo hyaham ||2-107-24
tena satyena bāṇena jahi tvaṁ śambaraṁ raṇe |
(pradyumna said :) If I am the son of rukmiṇī and the son of keshava (kṛṣṇa), O weapon! Kill shambara in the battle.
ityuktvā cāpamākṛṣya sandhāya ca mahāmanāḥ ||2-107-25
cikṣepa śambarasyātha daha.ṇllokatrayaṁ yathā |
(vaiśampāyana continued) Saying this, the one having great soul (pradyumna) pulled the bow string and shot the weapon at shambara as if all the three worlds will burn.
sa kṣipto vṛṣṇisiṁhena śaraḥ kravyādamohanaḥ ||2-107-26
hṛdyaṁ śambarasyātha bhittvā dharaṇimāgataḥ |
The arrow shot thus by the lion of vṛṣṇi-s (pradyumna), tempting the flesh, split the heart of shambara and entered the earth.
na cāsya māṁsaṁ na snāyurnāsthi na tvaṅ na śoṇitam ||2-107-27
sarvaṁ tadbhasmasādbhūtaṁ vaiṣṇavāstrasya tejasā |
His flesh, muscles, nerves, bones, skin or blood did not remain. Everything was reduced to ashes by the splendor of the vaiṣṇava weapon.
hate daitye mahākāye dānave śambare'dhame ||2-107-28
jahṛṣurdevagandharvā nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ |
As the demon having huge body, the lowly demon shambara was killed, the deva-s and gandharva-s were overjoyed. The groups of divine women danced.
urvaśī menakā rambhā viprachittistilottamā ||2-107-29
nanṛturhṛṣṭamanaso jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam |
urvaśī, menakā, rambhā, viprachitti, tilottamā as well as all the fixed and moving beings of the entire world danced with happy minds.
devarājastu suprītaḥ sarvadevagaṇaiḥ saha |
pradyumnaṁ puṣpavarṣeṇa tamabhyarcya prahṛṣṭavat || 2-107-30
The king of deva-s (indra) along with all deva-s became highly pleased. They greeted pradyumna by showering flowers happily.
atha samarahate tu daityarāje
madhumathanasya sutena vaiṣṇavāstraiḥ |
vigataripubhayāḥ surāścha jagmu-
rmakaravibhūṣaṇaketanaṁ stuvantaḥ ||2-107-31
As the son (pradyumna) of the oppressor of madhu (kṛṣṇa) killed the king of demons with the weapon of vaiṣṇava in the battle, the deva-s went away, devoid of the fear of enemies, praising the one having the sign of fish on his flag (pradyumna).
sa ca samaraparishramam vahanvai
nagaramukhaṁ pravivesha raukmiṇeyaḥ |
priyatama iva kāntayā prahṛṣṭa-
stvaritapadaṁ ratidarśanaṁ cakāra ||2-107-32
The son of rukmiṇī, having borne the effort in the war, entered the city. The one who enjoys with his dear, pradyumna, then happily saw rati (his wife).
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi shambaravadhe saptādhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ
Thus this is the one hundred and seventh chapter of viṣṇuparva, harivamsha, khila of mahābhārata, shambara eliminated.
