Parva 2 Chapter 108: māyāvatyā saha pradyumnasya dvārakāgamanam - pradyumna sets out with māyāvati for dvāraka

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Even though kālaśambara was fully knowledgeable on illusion, his illusions had come to an end. Valiant shambara , who was an expert of illusion, the one who can not be conquered in battle, was killed in battle on the eighth day (of the moon). tamṛkṣavante nagare nihatyāsurasattamam | gṛhya māyāvatīṁ devīmāgacchannagaraṁ pituḥ ||2-108-2 After killing the best among demons, in the city of ṛkṣavanta, pradyumna went to the city of his father with devī māyāvatī. yo'ntarikṣagato bhūtvā māyāvī śīghravikramaḥ | ājagāma purīṁ ramyāṁ rakhṣitāṁ tejasā pituḥ ||2-108-3 The valiant, expert of illusion, travelled through the sky and reached the beautiful city protected by the splendor of his father. so'ntarikṣānnipatitaḥ keśavāntaḥpure śiśuḥ | māyāvatyā saha tayā rūpavāniva manmathaḥ ||2-108-4 The boy descended from the sky to the inner quarters of keshava's (kṛṣṇa) house. He was looking as beautiful as if the god of love has acquired a body, along with māyāvatī. tasmiṁstatrāvapatite mahiṣyaḥ keshavasya yāḥ | vismitāścaiva hṛṣṭāścha bhītāśchaivābhavaṁstataḥ ||2-108-5 As soon as he descended (from the sky), some of the wives of keshava (kṛṣṇa) were struck with wonder. Some became happy and some were highly terrified. tatastaṁ kāmasaṅkāśaṁ kāntayā saha saṅgatam | prekṣantyo hṛṣṭavadanāḥ pibantyo nayanotsavam ||2-108-6 Then seeing the one with splendor of the god of love along with his wife, their faces became happy. With their eyes, they drank his beauty and enjoyed the festival of eyes. taṁ vinītamukhaṁ dṛṣṭvā sajjamānaṁ pade pade | abhavansnigdhasaṣkalpāḥ sarvāstāḥ kṛṣṇayoṣitaḥ ||2-108-7 Seeing him walking step by step, with his face lowered due to humility, all the wives of kṛṣṇa were overcome by affectionate feelings. rukmiṇī caiva taṁ dṛṣṭvā śokārtā putragarddhinī | sapatnīśatasaṅkīrṇā sabāṣpā vākyamabravīt || 2-108-8 Seeing him, rukmiṇī, highly eager to see her son, who was unhappy with sorrow along with her co-wives, spoke the following words, tearfully. yādṛksvapno mayā dṛṣṭo niśāyāṁ yauvane gate | kaṁsāriṇā mamānīya dattaṁ sāhārapallavam ||2-108-9 (rukmiṇī said) According to a dream I saw, after the midnight, the enemy of kamsa (kṛṣṇa) brought a fruit along with tender leaves for me and gave it to me. śaśiraśmipratīkāśam muktādāmavibhūṣitam | keśavenāṅkamāropya mama kaṇṭhe nyabadhyata ||2-108-10 Then, keshava (kṛṣṇa) seated me on his lap and decorated my neck with a garland of pearls sparkling as the moonlight. śyāmā sucārukeśā strī śuklāmbaravibhūṣitā | padmahastā nrīṛkṣantī praviṣṭā mama veshmani ||2-108-11 A dark woman with beautiful hair, looking beautiful in a white cloth, carrying a lotus flower in her hand , entered my house, looking at me. tathā punarahaṁ gṛhya snāpitā rucirāmbunā | kuśeśayamayīṁ mālāṁ strī saṅgṛhyātha pāṇinā ||2-108-12 Holding my hand, she bathed me in fresh water. Then that woman took up a garland of lotus flowers in her hand. mama mūrdhanyupāghrāya dattā svachcā tayā mama | Smelling me on my head, she gave me that fresh garland. evaṁ svapnānkīrtayantī rukmiṇī hṛṣṭamānasā ||2-108-13 (vaiśampāyana continued) Thus rukmiṇī recounted her dreams, with a happy mind. sakhījanavṛtā devī kumāraṁ vīkṣya taṁ muhuḥ | dhanyāyāḥ khalvayaṁ putro dīrghāyuḥ priyadarśanaḥ ||2-108-14 Surrounded by her maids, she looked at the boy (pradyumna) again and again and said: Definitely, this is the son of a fortunate woman. He has a long life and he is beautiful to see. īdṛśaḥ kāmasaṅkāśo yauvane prathame sthitaḥ | jīvaputrā tvayā putra kāsau bhāgyasamanvitā ||2-108-15 In this way, he is in his prime youth, looking like the god of love. (Then she spoke to pradyumna) Son! Who is that fortunate woman, blessed by having a son, alive, like you? kimarthaṁ cāmbudaśyāmaḥ sabhāryastvamihāgataḥ | For what purpose have you, as beautiful as the dark rain cloud, have come here, along with your wife? asminvayasi suvyaktaṁ pradyumno mama putrakaḥ ||2-108-16 bhavedyadi na nītaḥ syātkṛtāntena balīyasā | My son pradyumna will definitely be of your age, if he was not taken away by the powerful one who brings all to an end (god of death). vyaktaṁ kṛṣṇakumārastvaṁ na mithyā mama tarkitam ||2-108-17 Or else, clearly you are kṛṣṇa's son. My (thinking and) guessing is not in vain. vijṣāto'si mayā chihnairvinā cakraṁ janārdanaḥ | mukhaṁ nārāyaṇasyeva keśāḥ keśānta eva ca ||2-108-18 I have recognized you by signs. You are the one who agitates men (kṛṣṇa) without his cakra. Your face is similar to nārāyaṇa's (kṛṣṇa) face. Your hair as well as its tip is similar to kṛṣṇa's. ūrū vakṣo bhujau tulyau halinaḥ shvashurasya me | kastvaṁ vṛṣṇikulaṁ sarvaṁ dyotayanvapuṣā sthitaḥ ||2-108-19 Your waist, chests and arms are equal to those of the one who holds the plough (balarāma), my husband's elder brother. Who are you, standing here, with a body which sparkles the entire race of vṛṣṇi-s? aho nārāyaṇasyeva divyā te paramā tanuḥ | Your body is divine like the body of nārāyaṇa. etasminnantere kṛṣṇaḥ sahasā pravivesha ha | nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā shambarasya vadhaṁ prati ||2-108-20 During this time, kṛṣṇa, who heard nārada's words about the killing of shambara, entered there suddenly. so'paśyattaṁ sutaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ siddhaṁ manmathalakṣaṇaiḥ | snuṣāṁ māyāvatīm caiva hṛṣṭachetā janārdanaḥ | The one who agitates men (kṛṣṇa), with a happy mind, saw his eldest son, having the signs of the god of love as well as the wife of his son, māyāvatī. so'bravītsahasā devīṁ rukmiṇīṁ devatāmiva ||2-108-21 kṛṣṇa spoke to devī rukmiṇī, who is equal to goddess. kṛṣṇa uvāca ayaṁ sa devi samprāptaḥ sutaścāpadharastava ||2-108-22 kṛṣṇa said: O devī! This is your son who has come to you holding his bow. anena śambaraṁ hatvā māyāyuddhaviśāradam | hatā māyāsutāḥ sarvā yābhirdevānabādhayat ||2-108-23 He has killed shambara, an expert in the battle of illusions. He has conquered all the illusions of demons affecting the devas. satī chaya śubhā sādhvī bhāryā vai tanayasya te | māyāvatīti vikhyātā shambarasya gṛhoṣitā ||2-108-24 This auspicious good woman, faithful to her husband, is the wife of your son. She is famous as māyāvatī, who was living at the house of shambara. mā ca te śambarasyeyaṁ patnīti bhavatu vyathā | You should not have any worry thinking that she is shambara's wife. manmathe tu gate nāśaṁ gate cānaṅgatāṁ purā ||2-108-25 kāmapatnī na kāntaiṣā shambarasya ratipriyā | māyārūpeṇa taṁ daityaṁ mohayatyasakṛcchubhā ||2-108-26 Long ago, the god of love lost his body and became the one without any limbs. She is the wife of the god of love, his dear wife. She is not the wife of shambara. The auspicious woman confused the demon (shambara) with an illusory form. na chaiṣā tasya kaumāre vashe tiṣṭhati śobhanā | ātmamāyāmayaṁ kṛtvā rūpaṁ śambaramāviśat ||2-108-27 The sparkling woman, in her youth, did not live under his control. Taking an illusory form, she went to shambara. patnyeṣā mama putrasya snuṣā tava varāṅganā | lokakāntasyā sāhāyyaṁ kariṣyati manomayam ||2-108-28 She is the wife of my son. This beautiful woman is the wife of your son. She will assist the one loved by the world as he likes. praveśayaināṁ bhavanaṁ pūjyāṁ jyeṣṭhāṁ snuṣāṁ mama | ciraṁ pranaṣṭaṁ ca sutaṁ bhajasva punarāgatam ||2-108-29 Admit the wife of my eldest son, who deserves to be worshipped, to the house. Welcome your son who perished earlier and who has come again. vaiśampāyana uvāca śrutvā tu vacanaṁ devī kṛṣṇenodāhṛtaṁ tadā | praharśamatulaṁ labdhvā rukmiṇī vākyamabravīt ||2-108-30 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by kṛṣṇa, devī rukmiṇī became immensely happy and spoke the following words: aho dhanyatarāsmīti vīraputrasamāgamāt | adya me saphalaḥ kāmaḥ pūrṇo me'dya manorathaḥ ||2-108-31 (rukmiṇī said) Aho! I am most fortunate by the arrival of my valiant son. Today my desires have become fruitful. All my dreams are fulfilled. cirapranaṣṭaputrasya darśanaṁ priyayā saha | āgaccha putra bhavanaṁ sabhāryaḥ pravivesha ca ||2-108-32 I got the sight of my son, lost long ago, along with his wife. O son! Come and enter the house along with your wife. tato'bhivādya charaṇau govindaṁ mātaraṁ ca tām | pradyumnaḥ pūjayāmāsa halinaṁ ca mahābalam ||2-108-33 pradyumna bowed at the feet of govinda (kṛṣṇa) as well his mother (rukmiṇī). He worshipped the most powerful hali (balarāma). utthāpya taṁ pariṣvajya mūrdhnyupāghrāya vīryavān | pradyumnaṁ balināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ keśavaḥ paravīrahā ||2-108-34 Lifting pradyumna up, the best among the powerful, the most valiant keshava (kṛṣṇa) smelled his hair and caressed him. snuṣām chotthāpya tāṁ devīṁ rukmiṇī rukmabhūṣaṇā | pariṣvajyopasaṅgṛhya snehādgadgadabhāṣiṇī ||2-108-35 devī rukmiṇī, decorated with gold ornaments lifted the wife of her son, held her close and caressed her and spoke to her lovingly with falter. sametya bhavanaṁ patnyā śacīndramaditiryathā | praveśayāmāsa tadā rukmiṇī sutamāgatam ||2-108-36 rukmiṇī made her son who had arrived, enter the house with his wife, like aditi made indra and shachi enter her house. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi pradyumnāgamane'ṣṭādhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ Thus this is the hundred and eighth chapter of viśṇuparva, harvaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, pradyumna sets out with māyāvatī for dvāraka. nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 2-108-1 samāpteti || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi ṭīKāyāmaṣṭādhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ ||
