vaiśampāyana uvāca hṛto yadaiva pradyumnaḥ śambareṇātmaghātinā | māse'sminneva sāmbastu jāmbavatyāmajāyata ||2-110-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) In the same month, when shambara, the killer of his own soul, took away pradyumna, a son sāmba, was born to jāmbavatī. bālyātprabhṛti rāmeṇa śastreṣu viniyojitaḥ | rāmādanantaraścaiva mānitaḥ sarvavṝṣṇibhiḥ ||2-110-2 Trained in the use of various weapons by balarāma right from childhood, he was respected by all the vṛṣṇi-s after (bala) rāma. jātamātre tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śubhāṁ tāmavasat purīm | nihatāmitrasāmantaḥ śakrodyānaṁ yathāmaraḥ ||2-110-3 After sāmba was born, kṛṣṇa, whose enemies were killed, lived in that auspicious city, like śakra (indra) lived in his garden city (of amarāvati). yādavīṁ ca śriyaṁ dṛṣṭvā svāṁ śriyaṁ dveṣṭi vāsavaḥ | janārdanabhayāccaiva na śāntiṁ lebhire nṛpāḥ ||2-110-4 Seeing the prosperity of yādava-s, vāsava (indra) did not like his own prosperity. Due to the fear of the one who agitates people (kṛṣṇa), the (enemy) kings could not live in peace. kasyachittvatha kālasya pure vāraṇasāhvaye | duryodhanasya yajṣe vai samīyuḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ||2-110-5 After some time, all the kings assembled in the city of vāraṇa (elephant - hastinapuri) for a sacrifice conducted by duryodhana. tāṁ śrutvā mādhavīṁ lakśmīṁ saputraṁ ca janārdanam | purīṁ dvāravatīṁ caiva niviṣṭāṁ sāgarāntare ||2-110-6 Hearing about the prosperity of the one who agitates people (kṛṣṇa), his wealth and his sons and the establishment of the city of dvāravati in the sea, dūtaistaiḥ kṛtasandhānāḥ pṛthivyāṁ sarvapārthivāḥ | śriyaṁ draśṭuṁ hṛṣīkeśamājagmuḥ kṛṣṇamandiram ||2-110-7 all the kings of the earth made peace with (kṛṣṇa) by sending messengers and went to see the prosperity, to the house of the lord of senses (kṛṣṇa). duryodhanamukhāḥ sarve dhṛtarāṣtravaśānugāḥ | pāṇdavapramukhāścaiva dhṛṣṭadyumnādayo nṛpāḥ ||2-110-8 duryodhana and his brothers who follow dhṛtarāṣtra and pāṇḍava-s as also kings such as dhṛṣṭadyumna, pāṇḍyāścholakaliṅgeśā bāhlīkā drāviḍāḥ khaśāḥ | akṣauhiṇīḥ prakarṣanto daśa cāṣṭau ca bhūmipāḥ ||2-110-9 the lords of earth such as pāṇḍya-s, chola-s, kaliṅga kings, bāhlīKa, drāviḍa and khasa kings protected by ten and eight akṣauhiṇi-s (armies) ājagmuryādavapurīṁ govindabhujapālitām | came to the city of yādava-s (dvāraka) which is protected by the arms of govinda (kṛṣṇa). te parvataṁ raivatakaṁ parivāryāvanīśvarāḥ ||2-110-10 viviśuryojanākhyāsu svāsu svāsu ca bhūmiṣu | The lords (kings) stayed near the mountain raivataka at their own places along with their followers. tataḥ śrīmānhṛṣīkeśaḥ saha yādavapuṅgavaiḥ ||2-110-11 samīpaṁ mānavendrāṇāṁ niryayau kamalekṣaṇāḥ | Then the auspicious lord of the senses, the one with eyes as beautiful as the lotus, came to meet the indra-s (kings) of men along with leaders of yādavas. sa teṣāṁ naradevānāṁ madhyastho madhusūdanaḥ ||2-110-12 vyarājata yaduśreṣṭhaḥ śaradīva divākaraḥ | In the middle of those gods of men (kings), the slayer of madhu (kṛṣṇa), the best among yādava-s (kṛṣṇa) sparkled like the sun in winter season. sa tatra samudācāraṁ yathāsthānaṁ yathāvayaḥ ||2-110-13 kṛtvā siṁhāsane kṛṣṇaḥ kāṣchane niṣasāda ha | kṛṣṇa honoured the kings as per the convention, as per the position and as per the age. Then he sat on the golden throne. rājāno'pi yathāsthānaṁ niṣedurvividheṣvatha ||2-110-14 siṁhāsaneṣu citreṣu pīṭheṣu ca narādhipāḥ | The rulers of men (kings) also sat on their appropriate places in many different ways on beautiful thrones and decorated seats. sa yādavanarendrāṇāṁ samājaḥ shuśubhe tadā ||2-110-15 surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca sadasi brahmaṇo yathā | That assembly of yādava-s and kings sparkled like the assembly of deva-s and asura-s, presided by brahma. teṣāṁ citrāḥ kathāstatra pravṛttāstatsamāgame | yadūnāṁ pārthivānāṁ ca keśavasyopaśṛṇvataḥ ||2-110-16 In that assembly, many wondeerful discussions were held among yādava-s and kings in presence of keshava (kṛṣṇa). etasminnantare vāyurvavau megharavopamaḥ | tumulaṁ durdinaṁ cāsītsavidyutstanayitnumat ||2-110-17 During this time, the wind blew with the sound of clouds. There was lighting. The sky became covered with clouds, like a bad day. taddurdinatalaṁ bhittvā nāradaḥ pratyadṛśyata | saṁveṣṭitajaṭābhāro vīṇāsaktena bāhunā ||2-110-18 Breaking the cloud cover similar to a bad day, nārada appeared, with twisted locks of hair, carrying vīṇā in his hand. sa papāta narendrāṇāṁ madhye sāgarasaṁnibhaḥ | nārado'gniśikhākāraḥ śrīmāṣcakrasakho muniḥ ||2-110-19 Sage nārada, auspicious, sparkling like the ocean, blazing like the flames of fire, friend of indra, descended among the kings. tasminnipatite bhūmau nārade munipuṅgave | tadadbhutaṁ mahāmeghaṁ vyapākṛṣyata durdinam ||2-110-20 As the great sage among sages, nārada descended on the earth, the huge clouds and the signs of bad day vanished. so'vagāhya narendrāṇāṁ madhye sāgarasaṁnibhaḥ | āsanasthaṁ yaduśreṣṭhamuvāca muniravyayam ||2-110-21 Sage nārada , sparkling like ocean, went among the kings and told the best among yādava-s (kṛṣṇa) who was seated. āścaryaṁ khalu devānāmekastvaṁ puruṣottamaḥ | dhanyaścāsi mahābāho loke nānyo'sti kashchana ||2-110-22 (nārada said): You are the most wonderful! You, the best among men, are the prominent among devas. O the one with strong arms! You are the most blessed! There is no one else like you in the world. evamuktaḥ smitaṁ kṛtvā pratyuvāca muniṁ prabhuḥ | āścaryashcaiva dhanyashcha dakṣiṇābhiḥ sahetyaham ||2-110-23 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing this, the lord (kṛṣṇa) smiled and replied to the sage: I am the most wonderful and blessed along with tributes. evamukto muniśreṣṭhaḥ prāha madhye mahībhṛtām | kṛṣṇa paryāptavākyo'smi gamiśyāmi yathāgatam ||2-110-24 Hearing this, the best among sages, nāradā, spoke, among the kings: kṛṣṇa! I heard the appropriate words. I am going to the place I came from. taṁ prasthitamabhiprekṣya pārthivāḥ prāhurīśvaram | guhyaṁ mantramajānanto vacanaṁ nāraderitam ||2-110-25 Seeing him going, the kings, who did not understand the secret words spoken by nārada, spoke to the lord (kṛṣṇa): āścaryamityabhihitaṁ dhanyo'sīti ca mādhava | dakṣiṇābhiḥ sahetyevaṁ prayukte'pi ca nārade ||2-110-26 O mādhava (kṛṣṇa)! nārada said that you are wonderful and blessed. You replied to nārada that you are wonderful and blessed along with tributes. kimetannābhijānīmo divyaṁ mantrapadaṁ mahat | yadi śrāvyamidaṁ kṛṣṇa śrotumichcāma tattvataḥ ||2-110-27 We do not understand the meaning of these great divine secret words. kṛṣṇa! We would like to hear the meaning of this, if it can be heard. tānuvāca tataḥ kṛṣṇāḥ sarvānpārthivapuṅgavān | śrotavyaṁ nāradastveṣa dvijo vaḥ kathayiṣyati ||2-110-28 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Then kṛṣṇa spoke to all the kings: This can be heard. The twice-born (brahmaṇa) nārada will tell you. brūhi nārada tattvārthaṁ śrotukāmā mahībhujaḥ | yattvayābhihitaṁ vākyaṁ mayā nu pratibhāṣitam ||2-110-29 (kṛṣṇa said:) O nārada! Tell about the meaning of these words. The kings would like to hear the meaning of what you said and what I replied. sa pīṭhe kāṣchane śubhre sūpaviṣṭaḥ svalaṅkṛtaḥ | prabhāvaṁ tasya vandyasya pravaktumupacakrame ||2-110-30 nārada sat comfortably on a white seat decorated with gold and began to speak about the splendor of the respected One . nārada uvāca śrūyatāṁ bho nṛpaśreṣṭhā yāvantaḥ stha samāgatāḥ | asya kṛṣṇasya mahato yathā pāramahaṁ gataḥ ||2-110-31 nāradā said: O the best among kings who have assembled here! All of you hear about the limits of the greatness of this kṛṣṇa, as I understand. ahaṁ kadācidgaṅgāyāstīre triṣavaṇātithiḥ | carāmyekaḥ kṣapāpāye dṛśyamāne divākare ||2-110-32 Once upon a time, as a guest of those who bath thrice a day, I was wandering alone, on the shores of gaṅgā when the night ended and the sun rose. apaśyaṁ girikūṭābhaṁ kapāladvayadehinam | krośamaṇḍalavistāraṁ tāvaddviguṇamāyatam ||2-110-33 I saw a tortoise, huge and bright as the peak of a mountain, having a body of two shells, as wide as a krosha and twice as much length. catuścaraṇasuśliṣtaṁ klinnaṁ caiva sapāṅkilam | mama vīṇākṛtiṁ kūrmaṁ gajacarmacayopamam ||2-110-34 It was having four legs. Its body was wet and covered with dirt. The tortoise was shaped like my vīṇā. Its shell was hard similar to the skin of an elephant. so'haṁ taṁ pāṇinā spṛṣṭvā proktavāṣjalacāriṇam | tvamāścaryaśarīro'si kūrma dhanyo'si me mataḥ ||2-110-35 Touching with my hand, I told the animal which moves in water: O tortoise! You have a wonderful body. My opinion is that you are blessed. yattvamevamabhedyāyāṁ kapālābhyāṁ samāvṛtaḥ | toye charasi niḥśaṅkaḥ kiṣchidanyamacintayan ||2-110-36 You are covered with unbreakable shells. You move in water devoid of any worry, without any other thoughts. sa māmuvācāṁbucharaḥ kūrmo mānuṣavatsvayam | kimāścaryaṁ mayi mune dhanyaścāhaṁ kathaṁ vibho || 2-110-37 Then that tortoise which moves in water told me in human words: O sage! What is wonderful in me? O lord! How is it that I am blessed? gaṅgeyaṁ nimnagā dhanyā kimāścaryamataḥ param | yatrāhamiva sattvāni carantyayutasho dvija ||2-110-38 This heavenly gaṅgā is blessed. What is more wonderful than this? O twice-born! There are ten thousand beings like me in this (gaṅgā). so'haṁ kutūhalāviṣṭo nadīṁ gaṅgāmupasthitaḥ | dhanyāsi tvaṁ saricchreṣṭhe nityamāścaryabhūṣitā |2-110-39 Then, becoming curious, I told the river gaṅgā: O the best among rivers! You are blessed! You are eternally wonderful! yā tvameva mahādehaiḥ śvāpadairupaśobhitā | hradinī sāgaraṁ yāsi rakṣantī tāpasālayān ||2-110-40 You sparkle with beings having huge bodies. You have deep pools, you go to the ocean and you protect the residences of sages. evamuktā tato gaṅgā rūpiṇī pratyabhāṣata | nāradaṁ devagandharvaṁ śakrasya dayitaṁ dvijam || 2-110-41 Hearing this, gaṅgā took a body form and replied to nāradā, who is liked by deva-s and gandharva-s and who is the best friend of śakra (indra): mā maivaṁ devagandharva saṅgrāmakalahapriya | nāhaṁ dhanyā dvijaśreṣṭha naivāścharyopaśobhitā ||2-110-42 No, No! O the one liked by dava-s and gandharva-s! O the one who likes battles and quarrels! O the best among sages! Neither I am blessed nor I am decorated with wonder. tava satye niviṣṭasya vākyaṁ māṁ pratibādhate | sarvāścaryakaro loke dhanyaśchaivārṇāvo dvijaḥ ||2-110-43 You are fixed in truth. Your words were spoken about me. O twice born! The most wonderful and blessed in the world is the ocean. yatrāhamiva vistīrṇāḥ shatasho yānti nimnagāḥ | so'haṁ tripathagāvākyaṁ śrutvārṇavamupasthitaḥ ||2-110-44 Hundreds of rivers as wide as me go there. Hearing the words of the heavenly river gaṅgā, I told the ocean: āścaryaṁ khalu lokāṇāṁ dhanyaścāsi mahārṇava | yena khalvasi yonistvamambhasāṁ salileśvaraḥ ||2-110-45 O great ocean! You are the most wonderful and blessed in the world. O the lord of waters! You are the source of all water born animals. sthāne tvāṁ vārivāhinyaḥ sarito lokapāvanāḥ | imāḥ samabhigacchanti patnyo lokanamaskṛtāḥ ||2-110-46 You are the base of all rivers which purify the whole world. The rivers, your wives, come to you, worshipped by the world. samudrastvevamuktastu tato māmavadadvacaḥ | svaṁ jalaughatalaṁ bhittvā vyutthitaḥ pavaneritaḥ ||2-110-47 The ocean who was told thus, whose water body was split and made to rise up by the wind, told me these words: mā maivaṁ devagandharva nāsmyāṣcharyo dvijarṣabha | vasudheyaṁ mune dhanyā yannāhamupari sthitaḥ ||2-110-48 No, No! O the one who is liked by deva-s and gandharva-s! I am not wonderful, O the best among the twice-born! O sage! The earth on which I am based is blessed. ṛte tu pṛthivīṁ loke kimāścaryamataḥ param | so'haṁ sāgaravākyena kṣitiṁ kṣititale sthitaḥ ||2-110-49 What is most wonderful than the earth in the world? Hearing the words of the ocean, which was based on the earth, kautūhalasaṁāviṣṭo hyabruvaṁ jagato gatim | dharitri dehinām yone dhanyā khalvasi shobhane ||2-110-50 becoming curious, I spoke to the Earth, the refuge of the world: O earth! O the source of all bodies! O the one who sparkles! You are blessed. āścaryaṁ cāpi bhūteṣu mahatyā kṣmayā yute | tena khalvasi bhūtānāṁ dharaṇī manujāraṇiḥ ||2-110-51 You are wonderful among the physical world. You have great patience. You support the beings and you support the humans. kṣamā tvattaḥ prabhūtā ca karma cāmbaragāminām | tato bhūḥ stutivākyena sā mayoktena tejitā ||2-110-52 Patience was born from you. All actions of those who go to the higher worlds take place in you. Then the earth, charged by the praising words spoken by me, vihāya sahajaṁ dhairyaṁ pratyakṣā māmabhāṣata | devagandharva mā maiva saṅgrāmakalahapriya ||2-110-53 became courageous , appeared before me and spoke to me: O the one liked by deva-s and gandharva-s! No, No! O the one who likes battles and quarrels! nāsmi dhanyā na cāścaryaṁ pārakyeyaṁ dhṛtirmama | ete dhanyā dvijaśreṣṭha parvatā dhārayanti mām ||2-110-54 Neither I am blessed, nor I am wonderful. My splendor is due to others. O the best among the twice-born! Blessed are the mountains, which carry me. āścaryāṇi ca dṛṣyante ete lokasya hetavaḥ | so'haṁ dharaṇivākyena parvatānsamupasthitaḥ ||2-110-55 They, the reason of the worlds, are seen as wonderful as well. Due to the words of earth, I told the mountains: dhanyā bhavanto dṛśyante bahvāścaryāścha bhūdharāḥ | kāṣchanasyāgraratnasya dhātūnāṁ ca viśeṣataḥ ||2-110-56 O the ones who bear the earth! You are seen as blessed and wonderful. You are the source of gold, jewels and especially the minerals. tena khalvākarāḥ sarve bhavanto bhuvi śāśvatāḥ | te mamaitadvacaḥ śrutvā parvatāstasthuṣāṁ varāḥ ||2-110-57 You have a large form and you are eternal on the earth. Hearing my words, the best among the best of mountains, ūcurmāṁ sāntvayuktāni vacāṁsi vanaśobhitāḥ | those who sparkle by the beauty of forests, told me the following comforting words: brahmarṣe na vayaṁ dhanyā nāpyāścaryāṇi santi naḥ | brahmā prajāpatirdhanyaḥ sarvāścaryaḥ sureṣvapi ||2-110-58 O brahma sage! We are not blessed. Neither are we wonderful. Brahma, the father of all beings is blessed. He is most wonderful even among the devas. so'haṁ prajāpatiṁ gatvā sarvaprabhavamavyayam | tasya vākyasya paryāyaparyāptamiva lakṣaye ||2-110-59 Hence I went to the father of all beings, who is most splendorous among all, who is not having any decline, the ultimate destination of this exchanged word. so'haṁ pitāmahaṁ devaṁ lokayoniṁ caturmukham | stotuṁ paścādupagataḥ praṇato'vanatānanaḥ ||2-110-60 I began to praise the great grandfather, the lord, the source of the world, the one with four faces, paying obeisance to him, lowering my face. so'haṁ vākyasamāptyarthaṁ śrāvaye padmayonijam | āścaryaṁ bhagavāneko dhanyo'si jagato guruḥ ||2-110-61 I recited, seeking the completion of my words (āścarya and dhanya), to the one born from the lotus: O lord! You are wonderful. O preceptor of the world! You are blessed. na kiṅchidanyatpaśyāmi bhūtaṁ yadbhavatā samam | tvattaḥ sarvamidaṁ jātaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam ||2-110-62 I do not see any other being equal to you. All the fixed and moving beings are born out of you. sadevadānavā martyā lokabhūtendriyātmakāḥ | bhavanti sarvadevesha dṛṣṭvā sarvamidaṁ jagat ||2-110-63 The deva-s, demons, men, all beings in the world with senses and all that are seen in the world, are born from you, O the god of all deva-s! tena khalvasi devānāṁ devadevaḥ sanātanaḥ | teṣāmevāsi yatsraṣṭā lokānāmādisaṁbhavaḥ ||2-110-64 Hence you are eternal, the lord of all devas. You create all devas. You were the first born in the whole worlds. tato māṁ prāha bhagavānbrahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | dhanyāścaryāśritairvākyaiḥ kiṁ māṁ nārada bhāṣase ||2-110-65 Then the grandfather of the world, the lord brahma, told me: O nārada! Why are you praising me using the words blessed and wonderful? āścaryaṁ paramaṁ vedā dhanyā vedāścha nārada | ye lokāndhārayanti sma vedāstattvārthadarśinaḥ ||2-110-66 The most wonderful is vedas. O nārada! Veda-s are blessed as well. The meanings of the words of the veda-s support the entire world. ṛksāmayajuṣāṁ satyamatharvaṇī ca yanmatam | tanmayaṁ viddhi māṁ vipra dhṛto'haṁ tairmayā ca te ||2-110-67 My opinion is that the truth is given in the four parts of the veda-s - ṛk, sāma yajuṣ and atharva. O vipra! I know that they support me and I support them. pārameṣṭhyena vākyena nodito'haṁ svayaṁbhuvā | vedopasthānikāṁ cakre matisaṁsthānavistarāt ||2-110-68 Hearing the words of pārameṣṭhi (brahma) and prompted by the words of the one who was born by himself (brahma), I thought about the seat of veda-s, according to the detailed explanations. so'haṁ svayaṁbhūvacanādvedānvai samupasthitaḥ | avocaṁ tāṁścha caturo mantrapravacanānvitān ||2-110-69 According to the words of the one who was born by himself, I spoke to the four veda-s along with the words and commentaries: dhanyā bhavantaḥ puṇyāścha nityamāścaryabhūṣitāḥ | ādhāraścaiva viprāṇāmevamāha prajāpatiḥ ||2-110-70 You are blessed, fortunate and eternally wonderful. The lord of all beings said that you are the base of all brāhmaṇas. svayaṁbhuvo'pīha paraṁ bhavatsu praśnamāgatam | yuṣmatparataraṁ nāsti śrutyā vā tapasāpi vā ||2-110-71 The one who is born by himself has decided that you are the best among all. There is none above you either by shruti or by penance. pratyūcuste tato vākyaṁ vedā māmabhitaḥ sthitāḥ | āścaryāścaiva dhanyāścha yajṣāścātmaparāyaṇāḥ ||2-110-72 Then the veda-s stood up facing me and replied: The sacrifices performed for the supreme soul are wonderful as well as blessed. yajṣārthe ca vayaṁ sṛṣtā dhātrā yena sma nārada | tadasmākaṁ paro yajṣo na vayaṁ svavashe sthitāḥ ||2-110-73 O nārada! The creator made us for performing sacrifices. Hence sacrifices are superior to us. We are not under our control. svayambhuvaḥ parā vedā vedānāṁ kratavaḥ parāḥ | tato'hamabruvaṁ yajṣānbṛhadvāgbhiḥ puraskṛtān ||2-110-74 Veda-s are superior to brahma, the one who is self born. Sacrifices are superior to vedas. Then I told the sacrifices performed as explained by the words of vedas: bho yajṣāḥ paramaṁ tejo yuṣmāsu khalu lakṣyate | brahmaṇābhihitaṁ vākyaṁ yaccha vedairudīritaṁ ||2-110-75 O sacrifices! I see the most superior splendor in you according to the words spoken by brahma and as told by the veda-s āścaryamanyalloke'sminbhavadbhyo nābhigaṁyate | dhanyāḥ khalu bhavanto ye dvijātīnāṁ svavaṁśajāḥ ||2-110-76 I do not see anything else in the world more wonderful than you. You are blessed, as you belong to the same race as that of the twice born. te'pi khalvagnayastṛptiṁ yuṣmābhiryānti tarpitāḥ | bhāgaiścha tridaśāḥ sarve mantraishcaiva maharṣayaḥ ||2-110-77 The (sacrificial) fires get satisfied because of you, as all the deva-s are satisfied by the portions (offered to them in the sacrifices) and as the great sages are satisfied by the mantras (recited in the sacrifices). agniṣṭomādayo yajṣā mama vākyādanantaram | pratyūcurmāṁ tato vākyam sarve yūpadhvajāḥ sthitāḥ ||2-110-78 After I spoke these words, the sacrifices such as agniṣṭoma, all those having the flagstaffs of yūpa-s told me the following words as answer. āścaryashabdo nāsmāsu dhanyaśabdo'pi vā mune | āścaryaṁ paramaṁ viṣṇuḥ sa hyasmākaṁ parā gatiḥ ||2-110-79 O sage! The word, wonderful, does not suit us. Also the word blessed does not suit us. The most wonderful is viṣṇu who is our ultimate destination. yadājyaṁ vayamaśnīmo hutamagniṣu pāvanam | tatsarvaṁ puṇḍarīkākśo lokamūrtiḥ prayacchati ||2-110-80 All that is offered to the fire as sacred and consumed by us is given to us by the world personified, the one having eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower (viṣṇu). so'haṁ viṣṇorgatiṁ prepsuriha saṁpatito bhuvi | dṛṣṭaścāyaṁ mayā kṛṣṇo bhavadbhiriha saṁvṛtaḥ ||2-110-81 I, who was told thus by the sacrifices, came to the earth to see viṣṇu in person.
