arjuna said: O the best among the bharata race (yudhiṣṭhira)! Within a short time, all of us reached the village of the brāhmaṇa. After resting our carriers, we made arrangements for staying. tato grāmasya madhye'haṁ niviṣṭaḥ kurunandana | samantādvṛṣṇisainyena mahatā parivāritaḥ ||2-112-2 O the son of kuru (yudhiṣṭhira)! I stayed at the centre of the village, surrounded on all sides by the great army of vṛṣṇis. tataḥ shakunayo dīptā mṛgāścha krūrabhāṣiṇaḥ | dīptāyāṁ dishi vāśanto bhayamāvedayanti me ||2-112-3 Then, birds blazing fire and animals making cruel sounds frightened me by making sounds in all the lighted directions. sandhyārāgo japāvarṇo bhānumāṁścaiva niṣprabhaḥ | papāta mahatī cholkā pṛthivī cāpyakampata ||2-112-4 The colour of the evening sky was like red rose. The sun lost the splendor. Large meteors fell, making the earth tremble. tānsamīkṣya mahotpātāndāruṇā.ṇllomaharṣaṇān | yogamājṣāpayaṁstatra janasyotsukachetasaḥ ||2-112-5 Seeing the terrible fall of meteors which made the hair on my body stand up with fear, I ordered the army to be ready, as the crowd was watching curiously. yuyudhānapurogāścha vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ | sarve yuktarathāḥ sajjāḥ svayaṁ cāhaṁ tathābhavam ||2-112-6 The great chariot fighters of vṛṣṇi and andhaka races lead by yuyudhāna yoked their chariots and got ready. I also got ready in the same way. gate'rdharātrasamaye brāhmaṇo bhayaviklavaḥ | upāgamya bhayādasmānidaṁ vacanamabravīt ||2-112-7 When the midnight passed, the brāhmaṇa , worried by fear, told me the following words out of fear. kālo'yaṁ samanuprāpto brāhmaṇyāḥ prasavasya me | tathā bhavantastiṣṭhantu na bhavedvaṣchanam yathā ||2-112-8 (brāhmaṇa said:) O the ones who respects brāhmaṇa-s! The time of delivery has come. Be prepared so that you are not cheated. muhūrtādeva cāśrauṣaṁ kṛpaṇaṁ ruditasvanam | tasya viprasya bhavane hriyate'hriyateti ca ||2-112-9 (arjuna continued:) Within a short time, I heard a pitiable crying sound from the house of the one who trembles (brāhmaṇa): (the child is) taken away, taken away. athākāśe punarvācamaśrauṣaṁ bālakasya vai | ū.ṇheti hriyamāṇasya na ca paśyāmi rākśasam ||2-112-10 Immediately, from the sky I heard the sound of the boy - ū.ṇh. I did not see the demon who took the child away. tato'smābhistadā tāta śaravarṣaiḥ samantataḥ | viṣṭambhitā diśaḥ sarvā hṛta eva sa bālakaḥ ||2-112-11 O brother (yudhiṣṭhira)! Immediately by showering arrows all around, we blocked all the directions. But the child was taken away. brāhmano''rtasvaraṁ kṛtvā hṛte tasminkumārake | vācaḥ sa paruṣāstīvrāḥ śrāvayāmāsa māṁ tadā ||2-112-12 As his boy was taken away, the brāhmaṇa cried in sorrow. Then he made me hear harsh and cruel words. vṛṣṇayo hatasaṅkalpāstathāham naṣṭachetanaḥ | māmevaṁ hi viśeṣeṇa brāhmaṇaḥ pratyabhāṣata ||2-112-13 The vṛṣṇ-s lost their will. I stood there losing my mind and splendor. The brāhmaṇa spoke directly to me, addressing me in particular. rakṣiṣyāmīti choktaṁ te na ca rakṣitavānasi | śṛṇu vākyamidaṁ śeṣaṁ yattvamarhasi durmate ||2-112-14 (brāhmaṇa said:) Did you not tell me that you will protect? Then you did not protect. O the one with bad intellect! Hear these remaining words that you desire. vṛthā tvaṁ spardhase nityaṁ kṛṣṇenāmitabuddhinā | yadi syādiha govindo naitadatyāhitaṁ bhavet ||2-112-15 You are contesting always in vain with kṛṣṇa of exceeding intellect. If govinda (kṛṣṇa) was here, this unfortunate incident would not have occurred. yathā caturthaṁ dharmasya rakṣitā labhate phalam | pāpasyāpi tathā mūḍha bhāgaṁ prāpnotyarakṣitā ||2-112-16 As the fourth part of the results of the righteous deed goes to the protector of dharma, O stupid! the result of the bad deed will go to the one who did not protect. rakṣiṣyāmīti choktaṁ te na ca śakto'si rakṣitum | moghaṁ gāṇḍīvametatte moghaṁ vīryaṁ yashashcha te ||2-112-17 You said you will protect but you were unable to protect. Your gāṇḍīva bow is useless. Your valiance as well as your fame are useless. akiṣchiduktvā taṁ vipraṁ tato'haṁ prasthitastathā | saha vṛṣṇyandhakasutairyatra kṛṣṇo mahādyutiḥ ||2-112-18 (arjuna continued:) Without saying anything to the one who trembles (brāhmaṇa), I retired from there. Along with the sons of vṛṣṇi-s and andhaka-s, I came to the place where kṛṣṇa of great splendor was. tato dvāravatīṁ gatvā dṛṣṭvā madhunighātinam | vrīḍitaḥ śokasaṁtapto govindenopalakṣitaḥ ||2-112-19 Then, going to the city of doors (dvāravatī) I saw the slayer of madhu (kṛṣṇa). govinda (kṛśṇa) became aware that I was ashamed and burning with sorrow. sa tu māṁ vrīḍitaṁ dṛṣṭvā vinindankṛṣṇasannidhau | mauḍhyaṁ pashyata me yo'haṁ shraddadhe klībakatthanam ||2-112-20 The brāhmaṇa abused me, who was ashamed, in front of kṛśṇa: Look at my stupidity who listened to the words of the eunuch. na pradyumno nāniruddho na rāmo na ca keśavaḥ | yatra śaktāḥ paritrātuṁ ko'nyastadavaneśvaraḥ ||2-112-21 What neither pradyumna nor aniruddha nor bala(rāma) nor also keshava (kṛṣṇa) are able to protect, which other deva can protect? dhigarjunaṁ vṛthānādaṁ dhigātmaślāghino dhanuḥ | daivopasṛṣṭo yo maurkhyādāgacchati ca durmatiḥ ||2-112-22 arjuna who speaks useless words is useless. The bow of the one who boasts is also useless. The one with bad intellect, due to stupidity, takes up what is discarded by the god. evaṁ shapati viprarṣau vidyāmāsthāya vaiṣṇavīm | yayau saṁyamanīṁ vīro yatrāste bhagavānyamaḥ ||2-112-23 As the sage brāhmaṇa cursed, I took up the technique of vaiṣṇavī and went to saṁyamanī where the valiant lord yama (god of death) was. viprāpatyamacakṣāṇastata aindrīmagātpurīm | āgneyīṁ nairṛtīṁ saumyāmudīcīṁ vāruṇīṁ tathā ||2-112-24 Not seeing the son of the brāhmaṇa there, I went to the city of indra. I also went to the city of the fire god, nairṛti, udīcī of soma and the city of varuṇa. rasātalaṁ nākapṛṣṭhaṁ dhiṣṇyānyanyānyudāyudhaḥ | tato'labdhvā dvijasutamanistīrṇapratiśravaḥ ||2-112-25 Then, taking all my weapons, I went to rasātalaṁ and heaven. There also, I could not get the brāhmin's son. I was unable to keep my words. agniṁ vivikṣuḥ kṛṣṇena pradyumnena niṣedhitaḥ | darshaye dvijasūnuṁ te māvajṣātmānamātmanā ||2-112-26 As I was about to enter the fire, kṛṣṇa and pradyumna stopped me: "You will be shown the brāhmin's child. Do not insult your soul. kīrtiṁ na ete vipulāṁ sthāpayiṣyanti mānavāḥ | iti saṁbhāśya māṁ snehātsamāśvāsya ca mādhavaḥ ||2-112-27 The men shall establish your vast fame for ever." Speaking affectionately thus, mādhava (kṛṣṇa) consoled me. sāntvayitvā tu tam vipramidaṁ vacanamabravīt | After consoling the brāhmaṇa, kṛṣṇa spoke as follows sugrīvaṁ caiva śaibyaṁ ca meghapuṣpabalāhakau ||2-112-28 yojayāśvāniti tadā dārukaṁ pratyabhāṣata | to dāruka: yoke the horses sugrīva, shaibya as also meghapuṣpa and balāhaka. āropya brāhmaṇaṁ kṛṣṇo hyavaropya ca dārukam ||2-112-29 māmuvāca tataḥ śauriḥ sārathyaṁ kriyatāmiti | Asking the brāhmaṇa to mount the chariot and making dāruka to dismount, the son of shuṛa (kṛṣṇa ) told me: you drive the chariot. tataḥ samāsthāya rathaṁ kṛṣṇo'haṁ brāhmanaḥ sa ca | prayātāḥ sma diśaṁ saumyāmudīcīṁ kauravarṣabha ||2-112-30 O the best among kaurava-s! (O yudhiṣṭhira! arjuna continued): Then, kṛṣṇa, myself and also the brāhmaṇa mounted the chariot and proceeded in the direction of somā-s udīcī, towards north. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi vāsudevamāhātmye kṛṣṇasya udīcīgamane dvādaśādhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ Thus this is the one hundred and twelfth chapter of viṣṇuparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, kṛṣṇa goes north nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 2-112-1 muhūrteneti || · 2-112-4 japāvarṇaḥ | paundrapuṣpe japā matā iti viśvaḥ | dhūsarāṅkurakusumavat pītavarṇa ityarthaḥ || · 2-112-5 yāgasenāyāḥ sannāham || · 2-112-9 hriyate śiśiuḥ ahriyata hṛta iti || · 2-112-12 Arteti chedaḥ sandhirārṣaḥ || · 2-112- 29 āropya ratha iti śeṣaḥ || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi ṭīkāyāṁ dvādaśādhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ ||
