Parva 2 Chapter 113: mṛtabrāhmaṇaputrasya punaḥ pratyānayanam - brāhmaṇa's son restored

arjuna said: Then crossing many groups of mountains, rivers as well as forests, I saw the ocean, the residence of varuṇa. tato'rghamudadhiḥ sākṣādupanīya janārdanam | sa prāṣjaliḥ samutthāya kiṁ karomīti cābravīt ||2-113-2 Then the ocean itself respectfully received the one who agitates people (kṛṣṇa) as a guest. The ocean stood up with folded hands and asked: What shall I do? pratigṛhya sa tāṁ pūjāṁ tamuvāca janārdanaḥ | rathapanthānamicchāmi tvayā dattaṁ nadīpate ||2-113-3 Accepting that worship, the one who agitates people (kṛṣṇa) said: O the lord of rivers! I would like to have a way for my chariot as given by you. athābravītsamudrastu prāṣjalirgaruḍadhvajam | Then the ocean with folded hands told the one having garuḍa on the flag (kṛṣṇa). prasīda bhagavannaivamanyo'pyevam gamiṣyati ||2-113-4 (Ocean said) O lord! Be pleased! The others will also go likewise. tvayaiva sthāpitaṁ pūrvamagādho'smi janārdana | tvayā pravartate mārge yāsyāmi gamanāyatām ||2-113-5 O the one who agitates people (kṛṣṇa)! I am deep, the same one as installed by you long ago. If you make a way like this, I will become one that can be crossed easily. anye'pyevaṁ gamiṣyanti rājāno darpamohitāḥ | evaṁ saṣchintya govinda yatkśamaṁ tatsamācara ||2-113-6 The other kings, confused by false pride, will start going the same way. Considering this, O govinda (kṛṣṇa)! Do what is appropriate. vāsudeva uvāca brāhmaṇarthaṁ madarthaṁ ca kuru sāgara madvacaḥ | madṛte na pumānkaschidanyastvāṁ dharṣayiṣyati ||2-113-7 The son of vasudeva (kṛṣṇa) said: O Ocean! Do as per my words for the sake of brāhmaṇa and for my sake. Except me, no one will ever violate you. athābravītsamudrastu punareva janārdanam | abhiśāpabhayādbhīto bāḍamevaṁ bhaviṣyati ||2-113-8 (arjuna continued) The ocean again spoke to the one who agitates people (kṛṣṇa) afraid by the fear of being condemned: Let it be so. śoṣayāmyeṣa mārgaṁ te yena tvaṁ kṛṣṇa yāsyasi | rathena saha sūtena sadhvajena tu keshava ||2-113-9 O keshava (kṛṣṇa)! I am thinning to make a way for you. Along with the chariot, the flag and the charioteer, here is a way for you, vāsudeva uvāca mayā datto varaḥ pūrvaṁ na śoṣaṁ yāsyasīti ha | mānuṣāste na jānīyurvividhānratnasaṣchayān ||2-113-10 The son of vasudeva (kṛṣṇa) said: According to the boon given by me long ago, you will not become thin. The men will not know about your collection of jewels. jalaṁ stambhaya sādho tvaṁ tato yāsyāmyahaṁ rathī | na ca kaśchitpramāṇaṁ te ratnānāṁ vetsyate naraḥ ||2-113-11 O good one! Freeze the water! I will go over, mounted on the chariot. No man will ever know about your wealth of jewels. sāgareṇa tathetyukte prasthitāḥ sma jalena vai | stambhitena pathā bhūmau maṇivarṇena bhāsvatā ||2-113-12 (arjuna continued) As the ocean said, "let it be so", we proceeded over the frozen floor of water, sparkling like a jewel. tato'rṇavaṁ samuttīrya kurūnapyuttarānvayam | kṣaṇena samatikrāntā gandhamādanameva ca ||2-113-13 We crossed the ocean and the North kuru land. Quickly we crossed over gandhamādana. tatastu parvatāḥ sapta keśavaṁ samupasthitāḥ | jayanto vaijayantashcha nīlo rajataparvataḥ ||2-113-14 Then the seven mountains named jayanta, vaijayanta as also nīla, the mountain rajata, mahāmeruḥ sakailāsa indrakūṭaścha nāmataḥ | bibhrāṇā varṇarūpāṇi vividhānyadbhutāni ca ||2-113-15 the great meru, kailāsa and indrakūṭa, having variety of colours, forms and many wonders, offered worship to keshava (kṛṣṇa), upasthāya ca govindaṁ kiṁ kurmetyabruvaṁstadā | tāṁścaiva pratijagrāha vidhivanmadhusūdanaḥ ||2-113-16 and approached govinda and asked: What shall we do? The slayer of madhu welcomed them as well as required. tānuvāca hṛṣīkeśaḥ praṇāmāvanatānsthitān | vivaraṁ gacchato me'dya rathamārgaḥ pradīyatām ||2-113-17 The lord of senses (kṛṣṇa) told them who were bowing: Provide a secret way for my chariot to go. te kṛṣṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā pratigṛhya ca parvatāḥ | pradaduḥ kāmato mārgaṁ gacchato bharatarṣabha ||2-113-18 O the best among the bharatas! (yudhiṣṭhira! arjuna continued) Hearing the words of kṛṣṇa, the mountains provided the way as desired. tatraivāntarhitāḥ sarve tadāścaryataraṁ mama | asaktaṁ ca ratho yāti meghajāleṣvivāṁśumān ||2-113-19 All those disappeared then to my great wonder. The chariot proceeded unblocked like the sun proceeds among a group of clouds. saptadvīpānsasindhūṁścha sapta sapta girīnatha | lokālokaṁ tathātītya vivesha sumahattamaḥ ||2-113-20 Crossing all the seven islands, all the seven rivers as also all the seven mountains as well as worlds and other worlds, we entered a great darkness. tataḥ kadācidduḥkhena rathamūhusturaṅgamāḥ | paṅkabhūtaṁ hi timiraṁ sparśādvijṣāyate nṛpa ||2-113-21 The horses carried the chariot somehow with great difficulty. O king yudhiṣṭhira)! the darkness was feeling like black dirt touching the body. atha parvatabhūtaṁ tattimiraṁ samapadyata | tadāsādya mahārāja niṣprayatnā hayāḥ sthitāḥ ||2-113-22 Then the darkness became like a mountain, and, O great king (yudhiṣṭhira), it became impossible for the horses to move further. tataścakreṇa govindaḥ pāṭayitvā tamastadā | ākāśaṁ darśayāmāsa rathapanthānamuttamam ||2-113-23 Then govinda (kṛṣṇa) broke the darkness with his cakra and showed a best way in the sky for the chariot to move. niṣkramya tamasastasmādākāśe darshite tadā | bhaviṣyāmīti saṁjṣā me bhayaṁ ca vigataṁ mama ||2-113-24 When the darkness was destroyed and the sky appeared, the self consciousness was regained and my fear was gone. tatastejaḥ prajvalitamapaśyaṁ tattadāmbare | sarvalokaṁ samāviśya sthitaṁ puruṣavigraham ||2-113-25 Then a blazing splendor was seen in the sky, a body of the super being encompassing all the worlds. taṁ praviṣṭo hṛṣīkeśo dīptaṁ tejonidhiṁ tadā | ratha eva sthitaścāhaṁ sa ca brahmaṇasattamaḥ ||2-113-26 The lord of the senses (kṛṣṇa) entered the presence of the blazing treasure of splendour. The best among the brāhmaṇa-s and myself stayed back on the chariot. sa muhūrtāttataḥ kṛṣṇo niścakrāma tadā prabhuḥ | caturo bālakāngṛhya brāhmaṇasyātmajāṁstadā ||2-113-27 Then the lord, kṛṣṇa came out quickly, carrying the four sons of the brāhmaṇa. pradadau brāhmaṇāyātha putrānsarvāṣjanārdanaḥ | trayaḥ pūrvaṁ hṛtā ye ca sadyo jātaścha bālakaḥ ||2-113-28 The one who agitates people, (kṛṣṇa) gave all the sons to the brāhmaṇa, the three taken away earlier and the boy who was born then. prahṛṣṭo brāhmaṇastatra putrāndṛṣṭvā punaḥ prabho | ahaṁ ca paramaprīto vismitaścābhavaṁ tadā ||2-113-29 O lord (yudhiṣṭhira!) Seeing the sons again, the brāhmaṇa became happy. Then I also became highly pleased and wondered. tato vayaṁ punaḥ sarve brāhmaṇasya ca te sutāḥ | yathāgatā nivṛttāḥ sma tathaiva bharatarṣabha ||2-113-30 O the best among the bharata-s (yudhiṣṭhira)! Then all of us, as well as the sons of the brāhmaṇa returned as we went. tataḥ sma dvārakāṁ prāptāḥ kṣaṇena nṛ+pasattama | asaṁprāpte'rdhadivase vismito'haṁ punaḥ punaḥ ||2-113-31 O the best among kings (yudhiṣṭhira)! Then we quickly returned to dvāraka before half of the day was over. I wondered again and again. saputraṁ bhojayitvā tu dvijaṁ kṛṣṇo mahāyaśāḥ | dhanena varṣayitvā ca gṛhaṁ prāsthāpayattadā ||2-113-32 kṛṣṇa of great fame fed the brāhmin along with his sons.
