vidhinaitena kṛtsnena strī sadā bhartṛdevatā |
charetsaṁvatsaraṁ dāntā ṣaṇmāsānmāsameva ca ||2-79-1
Translation
umā said:
(O arundhati) With this scheme, the woman, who considers her husband always as god, with a caritable mind, shall observe the vow for an year or six months or a month.
striyo hyāvāhayetsādhvīrekādaśa samādhinā |
svayaṁ caiva vidhirdṛṣṭo vratakānāṁ mayā śubhaḥ ||2-79-2
She shall invite eleven well disposed women. I myself have found this auspicious scheme of observation for the vow by contemplation.
adbhirdadyātsatīḥ sarvā yā mūlavratinī bhavet |
tāsāṁ tu niṣkrayo deyaḥ kāladeśānurūpataḥ ||2-79-3
The woman who observes the vow shall give offerings along with water, to the women who are faithful to their husbands. They shall be given compensation, suitable to the place and time.
tato māsāntaśuklasya tithau ca navamī tathā |
ārādhayitvā kartavyaṁ vratakasyāpavarjanam ||2-79-4
Then, at the end of the month, during the fifteen days of the moon's increase, on the ninth day, she shall offer worship and conclude the vow.
upavāsamahorātraṁ vratakaṁ cāpi nishchitam |
ādau cānte ca kurvīta vratakasyāpi siddhaye ||2-79-5
She shall definitely observe fast in the prescribed manner during the day and night of the beginning and end of the vow for its successful completion.
kṣurakarma tato bharturātmanaścaiva kārayet |
utsādanaṁ ca snānaṁ ca tasminnahani saṁsmṛtam ||2-79-6
Afterwards, the husband's hair shall be cut. The woman shall cut her nails (see nīlakaṇṭa commentary). On the same day, it is prescribed that she shall take bath at the conclusion of the vow.
tato vivāhavatsnānaṁ vihitaṁ puṇyake śubhe |
maṇḍanaṁ caiva vihitaṁ mālyadhāraṇameva ca ||2-79-7
O auspicious lady! It is ordained that, bathing shall be done during the observation of puṇyaka vow as in marriage. Adorning ornaments and garlands is also prescribed for the vow.
kuṁbhaistu snāpyamānemaṁ sādhvī mantramudīrayet |
bhartuḥ pādau namaskṛtya manasā vātha vā girā ||2-79-8
The well disposed woman observing the vow shall take bath with water from pots. She shall worship the feet of her husband with her mind and with words pronouncing the mantra as follows:
āpo devya ṛṣīṇāṁ hi viśvadhātryo
divyā madantyo yāḥ śaṅkarā dharmadhātryaḥ |
hiraṇyavarṇāḥ pāvakāḥ shivatamena
rasena śreyaso mām juṣantu ||2-79-9
The mother of all sages, the goddess water, is the mother of the universe, the one who is manifested in the sky, the one who provides pleasure, the one who causes good, the one who is the source of dharma, the one who sparkles like gold, the one who is sinless (pure) who purifies all. Let her provide me all prosperity, with her auspicious essence.
apāmeṣa smṛto mantraḥ sarvatrānyatra me śṛṇu |
mantrāḥ purāṇavihitāḥ strīṇāṁ sarvāṅgaśobhane ||2-79-10
O lady with auspicious limbs! Listen! This mantra concerning water is used everywhere. For bathing of women during other occasions, other mantras prescribed in ancient histories are available. Hear them from me.
śubhāvyayā guṇinī yuktadharmā
bhartrā sākaṁ mama dāsyā vareṇa |
mā karmanā manasā vāpi vācā
bharturbhaveyaṁ ruṣatī syāṁ vaśaṅgā ||2-79-11
Let me become auspicious, let me not suffer from shortage of wealth, let me have all (good) qualities, let me always be yoked with dharma. Let me remain with my husband like a good servant doing even little things myself to serve him. Let me be obedient with my husband. Let me be not be angry with him by action, thought or words.
sapatnīnāmadhi nityaṁ bhaveyaṁ
saputrā syāṁ subhagā cārurūpā |
saṁpannahastā guṇavādinī ca
sarvātmanā syāṁ mā daridrā bhaveyam ||2-79-12
Let me always be the principal among my co-wives. Let me be blessed with children, good fortune and beauty. Let my hands be bountiful. Let me extol the qualities of others. Let me never become poor.
patishcha me syātsumukho matpratīkṣo
nityaṁ madbhaktaḥ syānmanmatirmadgatiścha |
prītiścha nau syāccakravākānurūpā
manovirāgo na bhavetsādhuvatsyāt ||2-79-13
Let my husband be with a pleasant face, welcoming me. Let him always be devoted to me. Let his intellect and destiny be towards me. Let us be pleased with each other like the cakravāka birds. Let there be no loss of love between us. Let our behavour be like best people.
lokānsādhvīnāmuttamānāṁ vrajeyaṁ
yābhiḥ sarvaṁ dhāryate viśvarūpam |
ubhe kule yāḥ śubhāḥ pāvayanti
piturbhartushcha patibhaktyorjitāścha ||2-79-14
Those women empowered due to the splendour of devotion to husbands and make the races of their father and husband auspicious and those who support the the entire world with their dharma, shall proceed to the worlds of the best goddesses, faithful to their husbands.
bhūmirvāyurjalamākāśamagniḥ
rantaḥ kṣetrajṣaḥ prakṛtiryo mahāṁścha |
ahaṅkāraścha mama sākṣye niyuktāḥ
smareyurme niśchayaṁ ca vrataṁ ca ||2-79-15
The earth, wind, water sky, fire, the internal soul, nature, the primal principle and the feeling of self-- I have made all these my witnesses. Let them remember my resolution and vow.
yairārabdho dehināṁ bhautiko'yaṁ
vidhiḥ sattvādyairbhūtayuktaiḥ sabījaiḥ |
santvete me sākṣiṇaḥ sarvasaṁsthā
vrate cāsminniśchaye cāpi nityam ||1-79-16
The good qualities combined with physical beings and the cause of action with which the bodily manifested has made this body, those and the all pervading deity -- I make them witness my resolution and vow.
candrādityau puṇyasākṣī yamashcha diśaḥ sarvā daśa cātmā ca meyam |
santvete vai sākṣiṇaḥ sarvasaṁsthā vrate cāsminniśchaye cāpi nitye ||2-79-17
The moon, the sun, the witness of puṇyaka vow, yama, the god of death, all the ten directions and my soul -- The deities present in all these -- I make them witness always my resolution and vow.
mantrairetaiḥ purāṇoktaiḥ sarvadravyābhimantraṇam |
vratacaryātprabhṛti vai purāṇe samudāhṛtam ||2-79-18
Using these mantras given in ancient histories, all the materials shall be invoked, right from the beginning of the vow -- So say the ancient histories.
snātvātha vāsasī dadyādbhartuḥ kartya svyaṁ śubhe |
athātmakartitaṁ na syācchubhe vighnena kenachit ||2-79-19
O auspicious woman! After taking bath, give your husband two dresses, cut and sewn by you. Due to some reason, if it is not possible to give dresses made by you, give other kinds of dress, there should not be any obstacle in this.
vāso'nyadeva dadyāccha śvetaṁ mukhyaṁ navaṁ shuchi |
svakartitaṁ ca sūtraṁ tu vāsasā tena mishrayet ||2-79-20
Other dresses, pure, new, best and white shall also be given. Attach a thread made by you along with those dresses.
tato dvijaṁ śuchiṁ dāntaṁ jṣānavijṣānakovidam |
bhojayeccha yathāśaktyā saha bhartrā sumadhyame ||2-79-21
O woman with a beautiful midriff! Afterwards, let a wise, knowledgeable, expert Brahmin be seated with your husband. You shall serve them suitable food.
brāhmaṇasyāpi dātavyaṁ vāsoyugmaṁ mahātape |
śayyāsanaṁ gṛhaṁ dhānyaṁ dāsaṁ dāsīṁ tathaiva ca ||2-79-22
O the woman who performs great penance! You shall offer clothes, beds, houses grains, servants and maid servants to brahmins.
alaṅkāraḥ shaktitashcha ratnaparvata eva ca |
sarvadhānyasamunmiśrastilaiścha saviśeṣataḥ ||2-79-23
You shall offer suitable ornaments, heaps of jewels, and especially sesame seeds mixed with all kinds of other grains,
vāsobhiścha praticchanno nānāvarṇairarundhatī |
hastyaśvāvacayaścaiva deyā gaureva ca dhruvam ||2-79-24
O goddess arundhati! The offerings shall be covered with clothes of different colours, along with elephants, horses and cows as well.
lavaṇapratimāṁ dadyānnavanītasya cāparāṁ |
guḍasya madhunashcaiva suvarṇasya ca śobhanām ||2-79-25
Beautiful, auspicious idols made of salt, butter, gud, honey and gold shall also be offered.
tathaiva sarvagandhānāṁ rasānāṁ pṛthageva ca |
tathā sumanasāṁ dadyādraupyasyaudumbarasya ca ||2-79-26
phalānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ vāsasāmapi nandini |
citrapratikṛtaṁ caiva kāṣṭhasya pratimāṁ tathā ||2-79-27
O nandini! In the same manner, fragrant materials of all kinds, essences, flowers, silver, fruits, clothes, pictures and idols of copper shall also be offered.
śilāṁ pratikṛtiṁ caiva dadhno'tha payasastathā |
sarpiṣā dūrvayā caiva yā cānyāmapyabhīpsati ||2-779-28
Milk, curd, ghee, karuka grass and stone idols may also be offered as desired.
kāladeśānurūpaṁ ca deyaṁ vibhavataḥ sati |
alpaṁ vā bahulaṁ vāpi bhartuśchandena sarvadā ||2-79-29
O woman faithful to your husband! Based on the wealth of the house, and the permission of the husband, small or large offerings shall be made.
tilapātraṁ pradātavyaṁ na deyaṁ nanu shobhane |
gaustvavaśyaṁ pradātavyā kapilā kāṁsyameva ca ||2-79-30
O auspicious woman! A pot of sesame seeds shall be offered. However, without the consent of the husband, nothing shall be offered. With the consent of the husband, cow and brass pots shall be offered.
kṛṣṇājinaṁ ca subhage satilaṁ vāsasānvitam |
ādarshashcaiva kūrchaścha tathājinamanindite ||2-79-31
O beautiful woman! Skin of black antelope along with sesame seeds and clothes, mirror and bunch of feathers and leather shall be offered.
etaddatvā sarvakāmānāpnoti varavarṇini |
puro'dhikā putravatī subhagā rūpabhāginī ||2-79-32
O beautiful woman! If these are offered, you will accomplish all desires. You will get prominent children and you will become beautiful.
mṛṣṭahastā dhanāḍhyā ca strī bhavatyamalekṣaṇā |
icchayā labhate caiva kanyā rūpaguṇānvitāḥ ||2-79-33
The woman also obtains daughters with beauty and good qualities, wealthy and having good habits.
bhavanti subhagāścaryāstathaiva ca puro'dhikāḥ |
putravatyo dhanāḍhyāścha śīlavatyaścha nityadā ||2-79-34
She becomes beautiful, wonderful and prominent. She will be blessed with children. She will be wealthy and always with good qualities.
arundhati kṛtaṁ hyetanmayaiva prathamaṁ yataḥ |
umāvratakamityeva khyātamatra mahītale ||2-79-35
arundhati! This vow was observed by me first. Hence, on the face of earth, this vow is known as the vow of umā.
etadevottamaṁ strīṇāṁ vrataṁ tasmātsamācaret |
sarvakāmānavāpnoti datvaivaitadanindite ||2-79-36
This is the best of vows for women. Hence this vow shall be necessarily observed by them. O the one who is not despised! By giving the offerings as required, the woman obtains all her desires.
etadvratakaro hyeva devadevo vṛṣadhvajaḥ |
purābhiṣiktavānsaumye priyārthaṁ mama sarvakṛt ||2-79-37
O gentle one! The lord of deva-s, the one with the bull as his flag, the creator of all, was installed in ancient times, for my liking, to conduct this vow.
vratakasyāvasāne'tha deyaṁ bhojyaṁ ca nityadā |
strīṇāṁ kāmāḥ pradeyāścha sadṛśāḥ kāladeśayoḥ ||2-79-38
At the conclusion of the vow, food shall be given always. Desirable items shall be offered to women appropriate to the time and place.
ekaikasya pradātavyaṁ vratakaṁ varavarṇini |
candato brāhmaṇānāṁ tu deyamannaṁ sadakṣiṇam ||2-79-39
O beautiful woman! The items of the vow shall be divided among the Brahmins. Also the Brahmins shall be given money and food as they like.
pāyasaṁ tatra dātavyaṁ vratake nānyadiṣyate |
nātra prāṇivadhaḥ kāryaḥ purāṇe niyatā śrutiḥ ||2-79-40
Sweet food shall be offered during the vow. Other substitute food is not desirable. Animals shall never be killed in this vow as prescribed in ancient histories, it is heard.
atha dvitīyaṁ vakṣyāmi vrataṁ somasamudbhave |
mahādevaprasādena dṛṣṭavatyasmi yacchubhe ||2-79-41
O the woman born from moon! O auspicious woman! Now I shall describe another vow, which, I have realized with the blessings of the great deva (shiva).
sarvāḥ putraphalā nāryaḥ sadbhiretadudāhṛtam |
tasmādanviṣyatīṁ dadyātsaputrakarakāṣchubhe ||2-79-42
O auspicious woman! As stated by good people, all women attain womanhood by bearing sons. Hence a woman who desires sons shall offer water pots to women.
jyeṣṭhāṣāḍhau śubhau māsau puroktaṁ vidhimācaret |
atha vā jyeṣṭhamevaikamāṣāḍhaṁ vā samācaret ||2-79-43
The vow shall be observed as described earlier during the auspicious months of jyeṣṭha and āṣāḍha or during either jyeṣṭha or āṣāḍha.
tato māsadvaye pūrṇe māse vā varavarṇini |
saputrakarakāndadyātphāṇitapratipūritān ||2-79-44
O beautiful woman! When the observation of the vow is completed after two months or one month, the woman desiring children shall offer water pots. The pots shall be full of sweet drinks.
sarpiṣaḥ payasashcaiva dadhno'tha madhuno'naghe |
jalasya ca tathā dadyātpūrayitvā shashiprabhe ||2-79-45
O the one who shines like moon! One who is without sin! Pots full of ghee, milk, curd and water shall be offered.
etasmai jṣānavṛddhāya suvratāya jitātmane |
saputrakarakāndadyādyāvanto manasaḥ priyāḥ ||2-79-46
The woman who desires children shall offer pots to a wise old Brahmin, who observes all vows filled with items dear to his mind.
iccheta strī duhitaraṁ strīṇāṁ kāmakaraṁ tataḥ |
kiṣchiddravyaṁ sutākāmātsutāṁ prāpnotyasaṁśayaḥ ||2-79-47
The woman who desires daughter shall offer those items to women which fulfill their desires. There is no doubt the woman who desires daughters shall obtain them.
gaurvātha kāṣchanaṁ vāpi dakṣiṇā caiva shasyate |
viprasyāccādanaṁ deyamavaśyaṁ tu shuchismite ||2-79-48
Cow and gold are considered as the best items to be given as dakṣiṇa. O the one with a beautiful smile! Clothes shall necessarily be given to brahmins in this vow.
yajṣopavītaṁ vratake dadyānnārī śuchivratā |
saputrakarakāṇāṁ tu vidhirukto vipaśchitā ||2-79-49
The woman who observes the vow as prescribed, shall offer the sacred thread. Wise men prescribe the scheme of offerings for this vow for the woman who desires children.
apatyākhyānayogena brāhmaṇebhyaḥ śuchivratā |
saṁvatsaraṁ susaṁpūrṇaṁ vratadharmānupālinī ||2-9-50
The woman who observes the vow, following the rules of the vow, based on the apatyākhyāna yoga (on the male star signs desiring sons and on the female star signs desiring daughters), (shall offer ) to Brahmins, throughout the year.
karakānapi dadyāccha pūrṇe saṁvatsare śubhe |
anujṣayā sadā bhartuḥ satyavādinyarundhati ||2-79-51
O auspicious woman! O arudhati who speaks truth! Water pots shall be offered at the end of the year, always with the permission of the husband.
suvarṇasūtraṁ viprāya kaumudyāṁ dātumarhati |
yajṣopavītaṁ viprasya vrataṁ saṁsthāpya kāmikam ||2-79-52
Threads of gold shall be given to vipra-s (those who are excited internally, Brahmins) on the full moon day of kartika. The vow shall be concluded by offering the sacred thread, for fulfilling the desires.
yajṣopavītaṁ karakaṁ dakṣiṇāṁ ca svaśaktitaḥ |
prayacchatī satī strībhyaḥ sarvānkāmānsamaśnute ||2-79-53
The woman who offers sacred thread, water pot and compensation based on her ability shall obtain all the desires of woman.
navaṁ na bhakṣayetkiṣcinnārī dhānyamatho phalam |
puṣpāṇi nopayuṣjīta yāvadevaṁ samācaret ||2-79-54
During the time of observing the vow, the woman shall not eat any new grains or fruit. She shall not use any new flowers during this time.
ekabhaktena dharmajṣe puṇyakaṁ kartumarhati |
brāhmanāya tathā deyam bhartushcha tadanantaram ||2-79-55
O the one who is fixed in dharma! The woman shall observe the puṇyaka vow, eating once in a day. After offering food to a brahmin, she shall offer food to her husband.
evaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ kṛtvā subhagā rūpaśālinī |
bhavatyavidhavā caiva strī dhanasya tatheśvarī ||2-79-56
If the vow is observed for an year in this manner, the beautiful woman shall never become a widow. Also the woman shall be the owner of wealth.
vārtākāni ca khādedyā strī pūrṇaṁ parivatsaram |
na sā putravināśaṁ hi paśyatītyavagamyatām ||2-79-57
The woman who does not eat brinjal for an year, shall never see the destruction of her son. Understand this clearly.
śaśakaṁ mṛ+gamāṁsaṁ vā nityameva vivarjayet |
nāpnoti maraṇaṁ nārī prāpnoti patidevatām ||2-79-58
The woman shall always avoid eating the meat of hare and deer. She shall not have a premature death. She shall obtain the fruits of being faithful to her husband.
alābuṁ varjayennārī tathaivotpādikāmapi |
kalambīṁ kāṣchanaṁ nādyādyā bhartuḥ sukhamicchati ||2-79-59
The woman shall avoid alābu and the shoots of sugarcane. The woman who desires the comfort of her husband shall not eat kalambī and kāṣchanaṁ.
pūrṇe saṁvatsare dadyādekaikaṁ śākamādṛtā |
sadakṣiṇaṁ putravatī bhavatyekā puro'dhikā ||2-79-60
On completing the year, the woman shall offer varieties of food along with (compensation) money. She will be blessed with children and will become foremost.
svayaṁ prakṣālayānā strī svapādāvevamāditaḥ |
pratiṣṭhāṁ labhate nityamudvegaṁ nādhigacchati ||2-79-61
The woman who observes this vow in this manner, washing her feet herself, from the starting of the vow, will always be steady. She will never be excited.
divā yā sūryapūtena vartayetstrī pativratā |
ekaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ pūrṇaṁ rātrāvannaṁ vivarjayet ||2-79-62
The woman, faithful to her husband, who consumes the food, purified by sun by the daylight and does not have (abandons) food during night for an year, completely,
sā jīvaputrā subhagā bhavatyamaravarṇini |
adhitiṣṭhati sarvāścha sapatnyo nātra saṁśayaḥ ||2-79-63
O the woman who sparkles like gods, she will become beautiful, blessed with (long) living sons and she shall be superior to all her co-wives. There is no doubt in this.
pūrṇe saṁvatsare dadyātsauvarṇaṁ sūryamuttamam |
brāhmaṇāyābhirūpāya daridrāya yashasvine ||2-79-64
On the completion of one year (of the vow), she shall offer a best golden idol of the sun to a wise, poor and famous brahmin.
phalāni vātha puṣpāṇi bhakṣyāṇyapi ca suvratā |
dadyādanastamitake caritavratakā tathā || 2-79-65
Or, the woman, faithful to her husband, who observes the vow, shall offer flowers, fruits and eatables, after the sun sets.
yā tathāstamite sūrye bhuṅkte strī niyatā satī |
candranakṣatrapūtāni bhojyāni varavarṇini ||2-79-66
Or the woman, faithful to her husband, who observes the vow, shall consume her food, purified by the moon and stars, after the sun sets.
sā dadyātkāṣchanaṁ candraṁ nakṣatrāṇi grahānapi |
abhirūpāya viprāya vāsaścha lavaṇānvitam ||2-79-67
On the completion of one year, she shall offer golden idols of moon, stars, as well as the planets, along with clothes and salt to a handsome brahmin.
candraśītalagātrī sā bhavatyamaravarṇinī |
subhagā darśanīyā ca putravatyapi bhāvinī ||2-79-68
The woman shall have a body, cool like the moon. She shall be sparkling like the gods, blessed with good fortune and beautiful to be seen. She shall be blessed with children and shall have become beautiful.
paurṇamāsyāṁ tu satataṁ prāpte somodaye'ṅganā |
arghaṁ dadyātsumanasāṁ sākṣataṁ sakuśaṁ tathā ||2-79-69
The woman shall always offer arghya (to the gods) during the full moon day, when the moon rises, along with flowers, grains and kusha grass.
yāvakaṁ ca baliṁ dadyāddadhnā ca saha saṁyutam |
evaṁ yā kurute nityaṁ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt ||2-79-70
She shall offer oblation along with grains of barley, mixed with curd. The woman who does this daily shall obtain all her desires.
adṛṣṭvā yā tu nāśnāti sūryaṁ nārī pativratā |
durdine vātha vā vyabhre seṣṭānkāmānavāpnuyāt ||2-79-71
The woman faithful to her husband, who does not eat her food, without seeing the sun in the clouded or clear sky, shall obtain all her desires.
kāṣchanaṁ shaktito dadyātsā viprāya manasvnī |
subhagā darśanīyā ca bhavatyamaravarṇinī ||2-79-72
The woman with a broad mind shall offer gold to brahmins, depending on her capability. She shall become beautiful to be seen and shall sparkle like gods.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi pārijātaharaṇe vratakathana ekonāśītitamo'dhyāyaḥ
Thus this is the seventynineth chapter of viṣṇuparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the taking of pārijāta, description of puṇyaka vrata, continued.

athaikonāśītitame hyādhyāye'tra nirūpyate |
nityaśeṣe vidhiryashcha kāmyānaṁ paramo vidhiḥ || 1 ||

· 2-70-3 yā nimantritā ekādaśa striyaḥ tāḥ sarvā adbhiḥ sākaṁ ācāryāya dadyāt sannihitatvāt | niṣkayo deyaḥ pūrvaṁ bhartṛbhyaḥ krītvā ācāryāya deyastataḥ ācāryānniṣkayeṇa gṛhītāstadbhartṛbhyaḥ pradadyādityarthaḥ ||
