vaiśampāyana uvāca
andhako nāradavacaḥ śrutvā tattvena bhārata |
mandaraṁ parvataṁ gantuṁ mano dadhre mahāsuraḥ ||2-87-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
O the one of bharata race! andhaka heard the words of nārada and understood the meaning. The great asura (andhaka) mentally decided to go to the mountain of mandara.
so'surānsumahātejāḥ samānīya mahābalaḥ |
jagāma mandaraṁ kruddho mahādevālayaṁ tadā ||2-87-2
The one with great power (andhaka) assembled demons of great splendor. The angry demon immediately went to the mountain of mandara, the residence of the great deva, shiva.
taṁ mahābhrapraticchannaṁ mahauṣadhisamākulam |
nānāsiddhasamākīrṇaṁ maharṣigaṇasevitam ||2-87-3
The mountain, covered by large clouds, was rich with great medicinal plants. Large number of siddha-s were there on the mountain. The mountain was served by the presence of great sages.
candanāgaruvṛkṣāḍhyaṁ saraladrumasaṅkulam |
kinnarodgītaramyaṁ ca bahunāgakulākulam ||2-87-4
The mountain appeared beautiful with trees of sandal (Sirium Myrtifolium, chandana), Agallochum (Amyris Agallocha, agaru) and Pinus Longifolia (sarala). The beauty of the mountain enhanced with sweet songs sung by kinnaras. Many elephants and serpents resided on the mountain.
vātoddhūtairvanaiḥ phullairnṛtyantamiva ca kvachit |
prasrutairdhātubhiścitrairviliptamiva ca kvachit ||2-87-5
At some places, where the forest in full blossom swayed due to wind, it appeared as if the mountain was dancing. At some other places, due to the flowing of different minerals, it appeared as if the mountain was smeared with pastes.
pakṣisvanaiḥ sumadhurairnadantamiva ca kvachit |
haṁsaiḥ śuchipadaiḥ kīrṇaṁ saṁpatadbhiritastataḥ ||2-87-6
At some places, sweet sounds of birds could be heard. Swans with clean feet flew here and there.
mahābalaiścha mahiṣaiścharadbhirdaityanāśanaiḥ |
candrāṁśuvimalaiḥ siṁhairbhūṣitaṁ hemasaṣchayam ||2-87-7
Buffaloes with great power, capable of destroying demons were roaming on the mountain. The mountain was decorated with lions, shining like moon rays. The entire mountain appeared like a heap of gold.
mṛgarājasamākīrṇaṁ mṛgavṛndaniṣevitam |
sa mandaraṁ giriṁ prāha rūpiṇaṁ baladarpitaḥ ||2-87-8
Many lions (kings of animals) roamed on the mountain. There were many herds of deer on the mountain. The demon, proud of his power, told the mandara mountain, which appeared in the body form.
vetsi tvaṁ hi yathāvadhyo varadānādahaṁ pituḥ |
mama caiva vashe sarvaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram ||2-87-9
(andhaka said) You know that I cannot be killed due to the power of the boon given by my father. All the three worlds, along with the moving and unmoving beings are under my control.
pratiyoddhuṁ na māṁ kaśchidicchatyapi gire bhayāt |
pārijātavanaṁ cāsti tava sānau mahāgire |
sarvakāmapradaiḥ puṣapairbhūṣitaṁ ratnamuttamam ||2-87-10
O mountain! No one ever wishes to fight me due to fear. O great mountain! I am aware of the forest of pārijāta (mandāra, Erythrina Indica) which exist on your summit, decorated with flowers that provides all desires. That forest is the best jewel here.
tadācakṣvopabhokṣyāmi tadvanaṁ tava sānuja |
kiṁ kariṣyasi kruddhastvaṁ mano hi tvarate mama ||2-87-11
Tell me where the forest is. I shall enjoy the forest which is on your summit. My mind is eager to go there. What can you do, if you become angry?
trātāraṁ nānupaśyāmi mayā khalvarditasya te |
If I harass you, I do not see any protection for you.
ityukto mandarastena tatraivāntaradhīyata ||2-87-12
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) When the demon said this, the body form of mandara mountain disappeared then and there.
tato'ndhako'tiruṣito varadānena darpitaḥ |
mumocha nādaṁ sumahadidaṁ vacanamabravīt ||2-87-13
Then andhaka became very angry. Proud with the boon, he released a great sound (roared loudly) and spoke the following words:
mayā tvaṁ vai yācyamāno yasmānna bahu manyase |
ahaṁ cūrṇīkaromi tvāṁ balaṁ parvata pashya me ||2-87-14
(andhaka said) Even after requesting you, you did not respect me. Hence, O mountain! I will reduce you to dust. You can observe my power.
evamuktvā gireḥ śṛṅgamutpāṭya bahuyojanam |
niṣpipeṣa girestasya śṛṅgeśvanyatra vīryavān ||2-87-15
sa hatairasuraiḥ sarvairvaradānena darpitaḥ |
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus, andhaka tore the peak, many miles vast. The valiant andhaka rubbed the torn peak on another peak of the mountain, along with all the other demons, proud with the boon.
taṁ pracchannanadījālaṁ manyamānaṁ mahāgirim ||2-87-16
viditvā bhagavānrudraścakārānugrahaṁ gireḥ |
As the great mountain with all its streams of water disappeared, suffered destruction, lord rudra (shiva ) knew about it and blessed the mountain.
saviśeṣataraṁ vīraṁ mattadvipamṛgāyutam ||2-87-17
nadījālairbahutarairācitaṁ citrakānanam |
nabhaśchyutaiḥ purā yadvattadvadeva virājate ||2-87-18
Becoming special, along with powerful elephants in rut and herds of deer, with many streams of water and with beautiful forests, the mountain dazzled with splendor as before, suitable for the heaven.
atha devaprabhāveṇa śṛṅgāṇyutpāṭitāni tu |
kṣiptāni cāsurāneva ghnanti vīrāṇi bhārata ||2-87-19
O the one of bharata race! (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) By the splendor of the lord, the peaks which were torn and thrown, killed the valiant demons.
kṣiptvā ye prapalāyante śṛṅgāṇi tu mahāsurāḥ |
śṛṣgaistaistaiḥ sma vadhyanti parvatasya janādhipa ||2-87-20
O the ruler of men! (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Those great demons who were running after throwing the peaks were killed by the same peaks of the mountain.
ye svasthāstvasurāstatra tiṣṭhanti girisānuṣu |
śṛṅgaistena sma vadhyante mandarasya mahāgireḥ ||2-87-21
Those demons who are standing comfortably on the summits of the mountain were killed by the peaks of the great mandara mountain.
tato'ndhakastadā dṛṣṭvā senāṁ tāṁ marditāṁ tathā |
ruṣitaḥ sumahānādaṁ narditvaivaṁ tadābravīt ||2-87-22
Seeing that his army was oppressed, andhaka became angry. He roared loudly and spoke as follows:
āhvaye taṁ vanaṁ yasya yuddhārthamupatiṣṭhatu |
kiṁ tvayācala yuddhena hatāḥ sma cchadmanā raṇe ||2-87-23
I am summoning the owner of the forest. Let him come for fighting. O mountain! Why should I fight with you? We are killed by deceit in the war.
evamukte tvandhakena vṛṣabheṇa maheśvaraḥ |
saṁprāptaḥ śūlamudyamya devo'ndhakajighāṁsayā ||2-87-24
When andhaka spoke thus, the great lord (shiva), holding a spear, mounted on a bull, arrived there for killing andhaka.
pramathānāṁ gaṇairdhīmānvṛto vai bahulocanaḥ |
shiva with great intellect, with three eyes (see nīlakaṇṭha commentary) was accompanied by his followers.
tathā bhūtagaṇaiścaiva dhīmānbhūtagaṇeśvaraḥ ||2-87-25
pracakampe tataḥ kṛtsnaṁ trailokyaṁ ruṣite hare |
As hara, the lord of the group of bhūta-s, having intellect, became angry, along with his followers, all the three world trembled.
sindhavashcha pratisrotamūhuḥ prajvalitodakāḥ ||2-87-26
jagmurdiśo'gnidāhāścha sarve te haratejasā |
The rivers flowed upwards. Water caught fire and burned brightly. Due to the splendor of shiva, the entire directions caught fire.
yuyudhushcha grahāḥ sarve viparītā janādhipa ||2-87-27
chelushcha girayastatra kāle kurukulodvaha |
All the planets fought against each other. O the ruler of men (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued). O the one who flourishes the race of kurus! At that time, the mountains shook.
pravavarṣātha parjanyaḥ sadhūmāṅgāravṛṣṭayaḥ ||2-87-28
uṣṇabhāścandramāścāsītsūryaḥ śītaprabhastathā |
The rain clouds showered burning cinders along with smoke. Then the moon became hot and the sun became cold.
na brahma vividustatra munayo brahmavādinaḥ ||2-87-29
vaḍavāḥ suṣuvurgāścha gavo'śvānapi cānagha |
O the one without any sin! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) brahma became unknown to the sages, who worship brahma. Mares delivered calves. Cows delivered dogs.
peturvṛkṣāścha medinyāmaccinnā bhasmasātkṛtāḥ ||2-87-30
bādhante vṛṣabhā gāścha gāvaścāruruhurvṛṣān |
Trees got uprooted, fell on earth, caught fire and became ashes. The bulls molested the cows and the cows molested the bulls.
rākṣasā yātudhānāścha piśācāścāpi sarvaśaḥ ||2-87-31
viparītaṁ jagaddṛṣṭvā mahādevastāthāgatam |
Demons, evil spirits and ogres were seen all over. As the great lord arrived there thus and saw that the entire world appeared upside down.
mumocha bhagavāṣcūlaṁ pradīptāgnisamaprabham ||2-87-32
tatpapāta rahotsṛṣṭamandhakorasi durddharam |
bhasmasāccākarodraudramandhakaṁ sādhukaṇṭakam ||2-87-33
The lord released his spear, having splendor as blazing fire. That terrible spear struck on the chest of andhaka. It reduced the terrible demon andhaka, a thorn for the good people, to ashes.
tato devagaṇāḥ sarve munayashcha tapodhanāḥ | vadavāḥ
śaṅkaraṁ tuṣṭuvuścaiva jagacchatrau nibarhite ||2-87-34
Then the groups of deva-s, all the sages having wealth of penance praised and pleased śaṅkara (shiva) as he killed the enemy of the world.
devadundubhayo neduḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha |
trailokyaṁ nirvṛtaṁ cāsīnnarendra vigatajvaram ||2-87-35
O the indra of men! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued). The divine drums sounded and flowers showered. All the three worlds became satisfied with the distress removed.
prajagurdevagandharvā nanṛtuścāpsaro gaṇāḥ |
jepushcha brāhmaṇā vedānījuścha kratubhistadā ||2-87-36
The deva-s and gandharva-s sang and the divine women danced. The brāhmin-s chanted the veda-s and performed sacrifices.
grahāḥ prakṛtimāpedurūhurnadyo yathā purā |
na jajvāla jale vahnirāśāḥ sarvāḥ prasedire ||2-87-37
The planets returned to their positions. The streams flowed as before. Fire did not blaze in water and all the directions became clear.
mandaraḥ parvataśreṣṭhaḥ punareva rarāja ha |
śriyā paramayā juṣṭaḥ sarvatejaḥsamucchrayāt ||2-87-38
The best among the mountains, mandara dazzled again with all the prosperity due to the flourishing splendor.
reme somashcha bhagavānpārijātavane haraḥ |
supracārānsurānkṛtvā śakrādīndharmataḥ prabhuḥ ||2-87-39
Thus, the lord hara (shiva) created a situation for deva-s such as indra to move around according to dharma and enjoyed in the forest of pārijāta (mandāra, Erythrina Indica) with umā.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi andhakavadhe saptāśītitamo'dhyāyaḥ
Thus this is the eightseventh chapter of harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, shiva slays andhaka.

saptāśītitame'dhyāye'muṣminnadhakavairiṇā |
andhakasys yudhi prāṇo hṛto rudreṇa chocyate || 1 ||

· 2-87-6 śuchiṣadaiḥ sadaḥ sabhā śuchisthāne sīdanti tiṣṭhantīti śuchiṣadāstaiḥ śuddhasadobhiḥ shuchipadairityapi pāṭhaḥ ||
· 2-87-10 ratnamuttamaṁ divyaṁ śreṣṭham ||
· 2-87-16 pracchannāni nadīnāṁ jālāni samūhā yatra tam ||
