vaiśampāyana uvāca
nabho nabhasye'tha nirīkṣya māsi
kāmastadā toyadavṛndakīrṇam |
prabhāvatīṁ cāruviśālanetrā-
muvāca pūrṇendunikāśavaktraḥ ||2-95-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) In the month of bhādrapada, seeing that the sky is covered by water bearing clouds, kāma (pradyumna) with a face as beautiful as the full moon, told prabhāvati, with beautiful long eyes.
tavānanābho varagātri chandro
na dṛśyate sundari cārubimbaḥ |
tvatkeśapāśapratimairniruddho
balāhakaiścārunirantaroru ||2-95-2
O the one with a beautiful body whose thighs always compete (with each other)! The moon, as beautiful as your face, is not being seen now, O beautiful woman! since the clouds, as dark as your hair, are concealing it.
saṁdṛśyate subhru taḍid ghanasthā
tvaṁ hemacārvābharaṇānviteva |
muṣchanti dhārāścha ghanā nadanta-
stvaddhārayaṣṭeḥ sadṛśā varāṅgi ||2-95-3
O woman with auspicious eyebrows! The lightning is seen in the dark clouds as golden ornaments on your body. O the one with beautiful limbs! The thundering clouds release streams of water as beautiful as your pearl garlands.
ghanapradeśeṣu balākapaṅktaya-
stvaddantapaṅktipratimā vibhānti |
nimagnapadmāni saritsu subhru
na bhānti toyāni rayākulāni ||2-95-4
Streaks of lightning are shining among the clouds with the brightness equal to your teeth. Lotus flowers are submerged in the waters, which is flowing fast, without any shine, O the one with beautiful eyebrows!
amī ghanā vāyuvaśopayātā
balākamālāmalacārudantāḥ |
anyonyamabhyāhanituṁ pravṛttā
vaneṣu nāgā iva śukladantāḥ ||2-95-5
These clouds are controlled by the wind. Streaks of lightning beautify the clouds like teeth. The clouds appear like elephants with white tusks, about to fight with each other, in the forest.
dhanustrivarṇaṁ varagātri pashya
kṛtaṁ tavāpāṅgamivānanastham |
vibhūṣayantaṁ gamanaṁ ghanāścha
praharṣaṇaṁ kāmijanasya kānte ||2-95-6
O the one with beautiful face! A tri-colour rainbow is seen on your face, made by the corners of your eyes. O my beloved! The rainbow, by decorating the sky and the clouds, increases the happiness of the lovers.
ghanān nadantaḥ pratinardamānā-
nnirīkṣya suśroṇi śikhīn prahṝṣṭān |
samāhṛtānuddhatapicchabhārā-
npriyābhirāmānupanṛtyamānān ||2-95-7
O the one with beautiful hair! See the group of peacocks, which continue dancing happily, spreading their beautiful feathers, seeing and respecting the thundering clouds.
harmyeṣu cānye śaśipāṇḍureṣu
rājanti suśroṇi mayūrasaṅghāḥ |
muhūrtaśobhāmaticārurūpāṁ
dattvā patanto valabhīpuṭeṣu ||2-95-8
O the one with beautiful hair! In the beautiful buildings, white as moonlight, other groups of beautiful peacocks dance on the roofs adding beauty.
praklinnapakṣāstarumastakeṣu
muhūrtacūḍāmaṇitāṁ vidhāya |
prayānti bhūmiṁ navaśādvalānā-
māśaṅkamānā dhṛtacārudehāḥ ||2-95-9
Peacocks with beautiful bodies sit on the topmost branches of the trees, looking like the head ornaments of the trees. They come down to the earth, with their beautiful bodies, making the new grass (on earth) doubtful (about their own beauty).
pravāti dhārāntaraniḥsṛtaścha
sukho'nilaśchandanapaṅkaśītaḥ |
kadambasarjārjunapuṣpabhūtaṁ
samāvahangandhamanaṅgabandhum || 2-95-10
Through the rain water, cold breeze blows carrying the fragrance of sandal and the flowers of kadamba (Nauclea Cadamba), sarja (Terminalia Tomentora) and arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna).
ratiśramasvedavināśahetu-
rnavodabhārānayane ca hetuḥ |
na mārutaḥ syādyadi cārugātri
na meghakālo mama vallabhaḥ syāt ||2-95-11
O the one with beautiful body! O my beloved! If the cool wind which takes away the perspiration of sexual efforts and which distributes the fresh rain water do not blow, this (rainy) season of clouds would not be dear to me.
evaṁvidheṣu priyasaṅgameṣu
ratāvasāne yadupaiti vāyuḥ |
ratiśramasvedaharaḥ sugandhī
tataḥ paraṁ kiṁ sukhamasti loke ||2-95-12
What is more enjoyable in this world than enjoying the fragrant air which takes away the perspiration of sexual efforts at the end of the sexual pleasure during these kinds of meetings of beloveds?
jalāplutānīkṣya mahānadīnāṁ
sugātri haṁsāḥ pulināni hṛṣṭāḥ |
gatāḥ śramaṁ mānasavāsalubdhāḥ
sasārasāḥ krauṣchaguṇānuvidddhāḥ ||2-95-13
O the one with beautiful body! Seeing that the sand shores of the large rivers are immersed in water, the swans, along with sārasa and krauṣcha birds, hesitant to live at the lake of mānasa, happily start to go there.
na bhānti nadyo na sarāṁsi caiva
hatatviṣīvāyatacārunetre |
gateṣu haṁseṣvatha sāraseṣu
rathāṅgatulyāhvayaneṣu caiva ||2-95-14
O the one with beautiful eyes! The rivers and the lakes do not sparkle, like a chariot without having the wheels, since the hamsa and sārasa birds have left.
bhogaikadeshena śubhaṁ śayānaṁ
dhruvaṁ jagannāthamupendramīśam |
nidrābhyupetā varakālatajjṣā
śriyaṁ pragamyottaracārurūpām ||2-95-15
Goddess nidrā, expert on the best timings, after praising Goddess śrī having the beautiful form, approached the auspicious lord, upendra (viśṇu), the lord of the world, who lies on the body of the serpent (ananta) bed.
nidrāyamāṇe bhagavatyupendre
meghāmbarākrānta niśākaro'dya |
padmāmalābhaḥ kamalāyatākṣi
kṛṣṇasya vaktrānukṛtiṁ karoti ||2-95-16
As the lord upendra (viṣṇu) sleeps, the lord of the night (moon) covered by the cloth of cloud, appears like the face of kṛṣṇa, as beautiful as lotus, O the one having long eyes like the petals of lotus!
kadambanīpārjunaketakānāṁ
srajo dhruvaṁ kṛṣṇamupānayanti |
puṣpāṇi cānyānyṛtavaḥ samastāḥ
kṛṣṇātpramādānabhikāṅkṣamāṇāḥ ||2-95-17
Here all the seasons, desirous of obtaining the pleasure of kṛṣṇa bring (produce) flowers of kadamba (Nauclea Cadamba), nīpa (Ixora Bandhucca), arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna), ketaka (Pandanus Odoratissimus) and sraja (Terminalia Tormrntora) and other flowers for kṛṣṇa.
nāgāścaranto viṣadigdhavaktrāḥ
spṛśanti puṣpāṇyapi pādapānyān |
pepīyamānānbhramarairjanānāṁ
kautūhalaṁ te janayantyatīva || 2-95-18
The flowers from which the bees drink honey are touched by serpents who move around carrying poison in their mouth, generating more curiosity among the people.
toyātibhārāmbudavṛndanaddhaṁ
nabhaḥ patiṣyantamivābhivīkṣya |
nipānagaṁbhīramabhinnavṛṣṭaṁ
manoharaṁ cārumukhastanoru ||2-95-19
Seeing the sky which is grand as a lake, as falling down due to the heavy load of groups of water bearing clouds, its splendor is lost, O beautiful one with beautiful face, breasts and thighs!
balākamālākulamālyadāmnā
nirīkṣa ramyaṁ ghanavṛndametat |
sasyāni bhūmāvabhivarṣamāṇaṁ
jagaddhitārthaṁ vimalāṅgayaṣṭe || 2-95-20
O beautiful woman with auspicious limbs! See the beautiful group of water bearing clouds, decorated by garlands of lightning! Because of them, rain showers on the plants and the earth for the benefit of the world.
jalāvalambāmbudavṛndakarṣīṁ
ghanairghanānyodhayatīva vāyuḥ |
pravṛttacakro nṛpatirvanasthā-
ngajānjgajaiḥ svairiva vīryadṛptān ||2-95-21
The wind creates a fight between clouds and clouds, dragging the groups of water bearing clouds as a king, proud due to his valiance, makes his elephants fight against the wild elephants.
abhaumamambho visṛjanti meghāḥ
pūtaṁ pavitraṁ pavanaiḥ sugandhi |
harṣāvahaṁ cātakabarhiṇānāṁ
varāṇḍajānāṁ jaladapriyāṇām ||2-95-22
These clouds showering the divine water purified by holy, fragrant air, provided joy for the best of those born from eggs (birds) such as the cātaka birds (Cucculus melanoleucus, said to subsist on rain drops) and peacocks who like the rain bearing clouds.
plavaṅgamaḥ ṣoḍaśapakṣaśāyī
virauti goṣṭhaḥ saha kāminībhiḥ |
ṛcho dvijātiḥ priyasatyadharmā
yathā suśiṣyaiḥ parivāryamāṇaḥ ||2-95-23
The frogs who sleep for sixteen pairs of weeks (eight months) croak with their beloveds, like the group of twice-borns, to whom truth and righteousness are dear, chant the vedas, along with their students and followers.
guṇe māhāṁstoyadakālajo'ya-
mabuddhameghasvanabhīṣitānām |
pariṣvajantaḥ parivarddhayanti
vināpi śayyāsamayaṁ priyāṇām || 2-95-24
Terrified by the sound of clouds (thunder), the beloveds embrace and provide joy to their dears, even during those times, outside sleeping time. This is the best feature of the season of rain bearing clouds.
doṣo'yamekaḥ salilāgamasya
māṁ pratyudārānvayavarṇaśīle |
na dṛśyate yattava vaktratulyo
ghanagrahagrastatanuḥ śaśāṅkaḥ ||2-95-25
O the one who is of the best race, who has beautiful complexion and good behavior! To me, the only one defect of the rainy season is this: The moon which is beautiful like your face is not seen, since it is covered by the clouds.
pradṛśyate bhīru yadā śaśāṅko
ghanāntarastho jagataḥ pradīpaḥ |
tadānupaśyanti janāḥ prahṛṣṭā
bandhuṁ pravāsādiva sannivṛttam ||2-95-26
O timid one! As the moon who lights the world is seen within the clouds, then people look at the moon with great happiness as they see relatives who return from foreign lands.
vilāpasākṣī priyahīnitānāṁ
saṁdṛśyate bhīru yadā śaśāṅkaḥ |
netrotsavaḥ proṣitakāmukānāṁ
dṛṣṭvaiva kāntaṁ bhavatītyavaimi ||2-95-27
O timid one! As the moon, witness to the wailing of the women separated from their beloveds appears, a festival of joy happens in the eyes of women seeing their lovers who returned from foreign lands.
netrotsavaḥ kāntasamāgatānāṁ
dāvāgnitulyaḥ priyahīnitānām |
tenaiva dehena varāṅganānāṁ
chandro'pi tāvatpriyavipriyaścha ||2-95-28
The moon is a festival of eyes for those women who are meeting their lovers. The moon is equal to the blazing fire for those who are without their lovers. For the women with beautiful body, the moon is dear, equal, with his body to their lover.
vināpi chandreṇa pure pituste
yataḥ prabhā candragabhastigaurī |
guṇāguṇāṁścandramaso na vedmi
yatastato'haṁ praśaśaṁsayiṣye ||2-95-29
O dear! This city of your father radiates with white light, similar to the moon light, even without the moon. Hence I cannot see the features of the moon's presence or absence here. That is why I am describing this.
avāpa yo brāhmaṇarājyamīḍyo
durāpamanyaiḥ sukṛtaistapobhiḥ |
gāyanti viprāḥ pavamānasaṁjṣaṁ
samāgatāḥ parvaṇi cāpyudāram ||2-95-30
The one who obtained the brāhmin kingdom easily which is not attainable by others even with good deeds or penance, the one whose praises are sung by brāhmins assembled in sacrifices under the name pavamāna, the lord soma who is worthy of praise,
pitā budhasyottaravīryakarmā
purūravā yasya suto nṛdevaḥ |
prāṇāgnirīḍyo'gnimajījanadyo
naṣṭaṁ śamīgarbhabhavaṁ bhavātmā ||2-95-31
The one who is father of budha, the performer of highly valiant actions, whose son is the lord king purūrava, he is worthy of praise. Being the lord of medicines and plants, he manifested the lost fire in the womb of śamī.
tathaiva paścācchakame mahātmā
purorvaśīmapsarasāṁ variṣṭhām |
pītaḥ purā yo'mṛtasarvadeho
munipravīrairvaragātri ghoraiḥ ||2-95-32
O my dear, having beautiful limbs! In the same way, long ago, this great soul (in the form of purūrava) desired urvaśī, the best among the divine women. His (soma's) entire body is of nectar. Long ago, the sages performing severe penance had drank the nectar, diminishing his body.
nṛpaḥ kuśāgraiḥ punareva yashcha
dhīmānato'gnirdivi pūjyate ca |
Ayushcha vaṁśe nahuṣaścha yasya
yo devarājatvamavāpa viraḥ ||2-95-33
In the race of moon, the intelligent king purūrava was born. Enriched by the sacrifices performed with kusha grass, he attained the heaven and received the worship there. In his race āyu was born whose valiant son nahuṣa attained the kingship of devas.
devātidevo bhagavānprasūtau
vaṁśe hariryatra jagatpraṇetā |
bhaimaḥ pravīraḥ surakāryaheto-
ryaḥ subhru dakṣasya vṛtaḥ sutābhiḥ ||2-95-34
The lord, the best lord of gods, hari (viṣṇu), the one who makes this world, was born in this race of soma who is surrounded by the daughters of dakṣa. O the one with beautiful eyebrows! The chief of bhaima-s (yādava-s) was born for doing the work of gods.
babhūva rājātha vasushcha yasya
vamshe mahātmā śaśivaṁśadīpaḥ |
yaścakravartitvamavāpa vīraḥ
svaiḥ karmabhiḥ śakrasamaprabhāvaḥ ||2-95-35
In the race of moon, the great soul, the light of the moon race, the king (uparichara) vasu was born. The valiant whose splendor was equal to śakra (indra) became the cakravarti with his great deeds.
yadushcha rājā śaśivaṁśamukhyo
yo'vāpa mahyāmadhirājabhāvam |
bhojāḥ kule yasya narādhipasya
vīrāḥ prasūtāḥ surarājatulyāḥ ||2-95-36
The chief of the race of the moon, yadu, became specially the chief king. In the race of king yadu, kings as valiant as the king of gods indra, were born.
na kūṭakṛdyasya nṛpo'sti vaṁśe
na nāstiko naiṣkṛtiko'pi vātha |
aśraddadhāno'pyathavā kadaryaḥ
śauryeṇa vā vāriruhākṣi hīnaḥ ||2-95-37
In the race of yadu , there is no king who does wrong deeds. Neither there is an atheist nor there is one who avoids his duty. There is no king who is careless, there is no one who is miserly. There is no one whose valiance is less.
vaṁśe vadhūstvaṁ kamalāyatākṣi
ślāghyā guṇānāmatipātrabhūtā |
kuru praṇāmaṁ śikharāgradanti
tasya tvamīśasya satāṁ priyasya ||2-95-38
O the one with long eyes as beautiful as the lotus! You are the bride of that race of men endowed with qualities. O the one with beautiful teeth! Pay obeisance to that lord, who is dear to good people.
nārāyaṇāyātmabhavāyanāya
lokāyanāya tridaśāyanāya |
khagendraketoḥ puruṣottamāya
kuru praṇāmaṁ śvaśurāya devi ||2-95-39
O devī! That lord who is worshipped by the self born brahma, is the base of the entire world and the gods. That lord nārāyaṇa, having the flag of the king of birds, garuḍa, the best among men, is your husband's father. Pay obeisance to him.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi pradyumnabhāṣaṇe paṣchanavatitamo'dhyāyaḥ
Thus this is the ninetyfourth chapter of viṣṇuparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, pradyumna addresses prabhāvatī.
