Parva 3 Chapter 100: dvārakāyāṁ pratyāgatasya śrīkṛṣṇasya pauṇḍrakeṇa saha yuddham - kṛṣṇa returns, and engages pauṇḍraka

vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ prabhāte vimale bhagavāndevakīsutaḥ | gantumaicchajjagannāthaḥ puraṁ badarikāśramāt ||3-100-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said : (O janamejaya!) Then, in the clear (without any impurity) morning, lord kṛṣṇa, the son of devakī, the lord of the universe, desired to go to his city from the hermitage of badarika. namaskṛtya munīnsarvānyayau dvāravatīṁ nṛpa | āruhya garuḍaṁ viṣṇurvegena mahatā prabhuḥ ||3-100-2 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Bowing to all the sages (of badari) and mounting on garuḍa, the great lord viṣṇu quickly reached the city of doors (dvāravatī). sumahāṣchuśruve śabdasteṣāṁ yuddhaṁ prakurvatām | gacchatā devadevena purīṁ dvāravatīṁ nṛpa ||3-100-3 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The lord of gods, kṛṣṇa, reaching the city of doors (dvāravatī), heard the loud sounds of them fighting the battle. acintayajjagannāthaḥ ko tvayaṁ śabda utthitaḥ | saṅgrāmasaṁbhavo ghora āryaśaineyasaṁyutaḥ ||3-100-4 The lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa) thought: Why are these sounds coming? This could be coming from the terrible battle along with the elder brother (balarāma) and the son of shini (sātyaki). vyaktamāgatavānpauṇḍro nagarīṁ dvārakāmanu | tena yuddhaṁ samabhavatpauṇḍrakeṇa durātmanā ||3-100-5 It is clear that pauṇḍraka has come to the city of doors (dvāraka ). A battle must be taking place with the wicked soul, pauṇḍraka. yadūnāṁ vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṁ yuddhyatāmitaretaram | śabdo'yaṁ sumahānvyakto nātra kāryā vicāraṇā ||3-100-6 It is definite that these loud sounds must be coming when the yādava-s, the valiants of the race of vṛṣṇi-s are fighting with the enemies. There is nothing else to be thought on this. ityevaṁ cintayitvā tu dadhmau śaṅkhaṁ mahāravam | pāṣchajanyaṁ hariḥ sākṣātprīṇayanvṛṣṇipuṅgavān ||3-100-7 Thinking thus, the lord, hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) himself, blew his conch pāṣchajanya, with a great sound pleasing the best among the vṛṣṇis. rodasī pūrayāmāsa tena shabdena keśavaḥ | yādavā vṛṣṇayaścaiva śrutvā śaṅkhasya te ravam ||3-100-8 With that sound, keshava (kṛṣṇa) filled the earth and the sky. The yādava-s and vṛṣṇi-s heard the sound of that conch and said: vyaktamāyāti bhagavānpāṣchajanyaravo hyayam | iti te menire rājanvṛṣṇayo yādavāstathā ||3-100-9 It is definite that lord kṛṣṇa is coming. This is the sound of his conch, pāṣchajanya. O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Then the vṛṣṇi-s and yādava-s knew so. nirbhayāḥ samapadyanta vṛṣṇayo yādavāścha te | tasminneva kṣaṇe dṛṣṭastārkṣyaścha patatāṁ varaḥ ||3-100-10 Then the vṛṣṇi-s and yādava-s became devoid of fear. At that moment itself, the best among the birds, tārkṣya (garuḍa) became visible to them. tatashcha devakīsūnurdṛṣṭastairyādaveśvaraḥ | Immediately, the son of devakī, the lord of yādava-s (kṛṣṇa) also became visible. sūtāścha māgadhāścaiva puro yānti jagatpateḥ ||3-100-11 stutyā stutaṁ hariṁ viṣnṇumīśvaraṁ kamalekṣaṇam | The royal bards and panegyrists came forward to the lord of the universe, and praised hari, viṣṇu, the lord, whose eyes bestow prosperity with their looks. gatāścha yādavāḥ sarve parivavrurjanārdanam ||3-100-12 All the yādava-s surrounded janārdana (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa). kṛṣṇastu garuḍaṁ bhūyo gaccha tvaṁ nākamuttamam | ityuktvā garuḍaṁ viṣṇurvisṛjya yadunandanaḥ ||3-100-13 kṛṣṇa told garuḍa: You go to the best of heavens. Saying this, viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa, the son of yadu, released garuḍa. dārukaṁ punarāhedaṁ rathamānaya me prabho | sa tatheti pratijṣāya rathamādāya satvaram ||3-100-14 Then kṛṣṇa told dāruka: O lord! Bring my chariot. Acknowledging "Let it be so", dāruka quickly brought the chariot and ratho'yaṁ bhagavandeva kimataḥ kṛtyamasti me | ityuktvā rathamādāya praṇamyāgre sthito hareḥ ||3-100-15 saying that "O lord! O deva! Here is the chariot. What shall I do further?" he brought the chariot, bowed and stood in front of hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa). gate'tha garuḍe viṣṇū rathamāruhya satvaram | yatra yuddhaṁ samabhavattatra yāti sma keśavaḥ ||3-100-16 As garuḍa left, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) quickly mounted the chariot. keshava (kṛṣṇa) reached the place where the battle was taking place. tatra gatvā mahārāja yudhyatāṁ ca mahātmanām | pāṣchajanyaṁ mahāśaṅkhaṁ dadhmau yaduvṛṣottamaḥ ||3-100-17 O great king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Reaching the battlefield where the great souls are fighting, the best among the bulls of yādava-s, kṛṣṇa, blew the great conch, pāṣchajanyaṁ. pauṇḍro'tha vāsudevastu kṛ+ṣṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā raṇotsukam | sātyakiṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā vāsudevamupāgamat ||3-100-18 Seeing kṛṣṇa, keen to fight the battle, pauṇḍraka vāsudeva, left sātyaki behind and came in front of vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa). kruddho'tha sātyakī rājan vārayāmāsa pauṇḍrakam | na gantavyamito rājanneṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ||3-100-19 Then O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), sātyaki became angry and blocked pauṇḍraka and said: O king! Do not go away. This can not be the eternal dharma. jitvā māṁ gaccha rājendra paraṁ yoddhuṁ mahāraṇe | kṣatriyo'si mahāvīra sthite mayi raṇotsuke ||3-100-20 Conquering me, O the indra of kings! (pauṇḍraka), you may proceed to fight against another enemy in the great battle, as I, a great valiant kṣatriya, is standing here, keen to fight the battle. eṣa te garvamakhilaṁ nāśayiṣyāmi saṁyuge | ityuktvā cāgratastasthau gacchato yādaveśvaraḥ ||3-100-21 pauṇḍrasya śininaptā tu paśyataḥ keshavasya ha | Now I will destroy all your pride in the battle field. Speaking thus, the lord of yādava-s, the grandson of shini, (sātyaki), stood in front of pauṇḍraka, as he was going away, as watched by keshava, (kṛṣṇa). avajṣāya śineḥ pautraṁ kṛṣṇameva jagāma ha ||3-100-22 Even then, despising the grandson of shini (sātyaki), pauṇḍraka proceeded towards kṛṣṇa. nirbhartsya sahasā bhūyaḥ sātyakiḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ | gadayā prāharatpauṇḍraṁ vāsudevasya paśyataḥ ||3-100-23 Then, terribly angered, sātyaki abused pauṇḍraka and suddenly struck him again with his mace as vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa) was watching. yathāprāṇaṁ yathāyogaṁ sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ | dṛṣṭvātha bhagavānevaṁ sātyakiṁ praśaśaṁsa ha ||3-100-24 sātyaki, the truly valiant fighter, struck pauṇḍraka with full concentration and strength. Seeing this, lord kṛṣṇa praised sātyaki. nivārya sātyakiṁ kṛṣṇo yatheṣṭaṁ kriyatāmasau | upāramadyathāyogaṁ sātyakiḥ kṛṣṇavāritaḥ ||3-100-25 kṛṣṇa prevented sātyaki saying that "Let him (pauṇḍraka) do as he likes. sātyaki, prevented by kṛṣṇa withdrew as required. sa tataḥ pauṇḍrako rājā vāsudevamuvāca ha | bho bho yādava gopāla idānīṁ kva gato bhavān ||3-100-26 Then king pauṇḍraka told vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa): O yādava! O gopāla! Where did you go at this time? tvāṁ draṣṭumatha saṁprāpto vāsudevo'smi sāṁpratam | To see you, I vāsudeva, prompyly came here. hatvā tvāṁ sabalaṁ kṛṣṇa balairbahubhiranvitaḥ ||3-100-27 ahameko bhaviṣyāmi vāsudevo mahītale | O kṛṣṇa, I have many armies with me. Killing you along with your army, I will become the only vāsudeva on the face of earth. yaccakraṁ tava govinda prathitaṁ suprabhaṁ mahat ||3-100-28 anena tava cakreṇa pīḍito'smi ca tadraṇe | O govinda! (kṛṣṇa!) I will destroy the famous and greatly splendorous cakra you have with my cakra in this battle. cakramastīti tadvīryaṁ tava mādhava sāṁpratam ||3-100-29 naśayiṣyāmi tatsarvaṁ sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ | O mādhava! (kṛṣṇa!) Today, I will destroy all your valiance and pride that you have this cakra, as all the kṣatriya-s are watching. śārṅgīti māṁ vijānīhi na tvaṁ śārṅgīti siṣyate ||3-100-30 śaṅkhī cāhaṁ gadī cāhaṁ cakrī cāhaṁ janārdana ||3-100-31 Know that I have a bow, śārṅga. You are not the one who is known as the one who holds śārṅga. I have a conch. I have a mace. O janārdana! I have a cakra as well. māmeva hi sadā brūyurjānanto vīryaśālinaḥ | ādau tvaṁ balavadvṛddhānhatvā strībālakānbahūn ||3-100-32 The great valiant shall always know and speak about me only. In the beginning, by killing many powerful old men, women as well as boys, gāścha hatvā mahāgarvastava saṁprati vartate | tatte'haṁ vyapaneṣyāmi yadi tiṣṭhasi matpuraḥ ||3-100-33 and by killing cattle, you have great pride. I will destroy your pride today if you stand in front of me in the battle field. śastraṁ gṛhāṇa govinda yadi yoddhuṁ vyavasthitaḥ | ityuktvā bāṇamādāya tasthau pārśve jagatpateḥ ||3-100-34 O govinda (kṛṣṇa)! If you are ready for battle, take up weapons. Saying thus, pauṇḍraka took up an arrow and stood by the side of the lord of universe (kṛṣṇa). etadvacanamākarṇya vāsudevena bhāṣitam | smitaṁ kṛtvā hariḥ kṛṣṇo babhāṣe pauṇḍrakaṁ nṛpam ||3-100-35 Hearing the words spoken by (pauṇḍraka) vāsudeva, hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) spoke to king pauṇḍraka. kāmaṁ vada nṛpa tvaṁ hi pātakyasmi sadā nṛpa | goghātī bālaghātī ca strīhantā sarvathā nṛpa ||3-100-36 O king! You may speak as you wish. O king! I am always a sinner. O king! I am a killer of cattle (killing of vṛṣabhāsura), boys (causing the death of ṣaḍgarbha-s by kaṁsa) and women (pūatana) by all means. cakrī bhava gadī rājaṣcārṅgī ca satataṁ bhava | nāmadheyaṁ vṛthā mahyaṁ vāsudeveti ca prabho ||3-100-37 O king! You always be the holder of cakra, holder of mace as well as the holder of the bow, śārṅga. O lord! Let my name, vāsudeva, be always in vain. śārṅgī cakrī gadī śaṅkhītyevamādi vṛthā mama | kiṁ tu vakṣyāmi kiṣchittu śṛṇuṣva yadi manyase ||3-100-38 Let my name as the holder of the bow śārṅga, holder of cakra, holder of gada and the holder of conch be always in vain. However I am speaking some thing which you may hear if you agree. kṣatriyā balino ye tu sthite mayi jagatpatau ||3-100-38 tathānubruvate tvāṁ hi jīvatyeva mayi prabho | O king! Will the powerful kṣatriya-s speak about you as such, as long as I am alive as the lord of the universe? yatte cakraṁ mahāghoramasurāntakaraṁ mahat ||3-100-39 tattulyaṁ mama cakraṁ tu vṛttato na tu vīryataḥ | My cakra will be equal to your highly terrible cakra, the destroyer of asura-s, only in circumference and not in valiance. āyudheṣvatha sarvatra śabdasādṛśyamasti te ||3-100-40 In all our weapons there is a similarity in sound (name). gopo'haṁ sarvadā rājanprāṇināṁ prāṇadaḥ sadā | goptā sarveṣu lokeṣu śāstā duṣṭasya sarvadā ||3-100-41 O king! I am always a cowherd. I am always the provider of life force for the living beings. I am the one who protect all the worlds. I am the one who always governs the wicked. katthanaṁ sarvakāryaṁ hi jitvā śatrūnnṛpādhama | ajitvā kiṁ bhavānbrūte sthite mayi ca śastriṇi ||3-100-42 O vile king! I need to speak about all after conquering the enemy. Why are you talking without conquering me, who stands holding weapons. hatvā māṁ brūhi rājendra yadi śakto'si pauṇḍraka | sthito'haṁ cakramāśritya rathī cāpī gadāsimān ||3-100-43 O the indra of kings! O pauṇḍraka! If you are powerful, then talk after killing me. I am standing here depending on the cakra, mounted on the chariot, holding the bow, mace as well as the sword. rathamāruhya yuddhāya sannaddho bhava mānada | ityuktvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ siṁhanādaṁ vyanīnadat ||3-100-44 O the one with pride! Be ready for the battle, mounting on your chariot.
