Parva 3 Chapter 101: pauṇḍrakavadhaḥ - pauṇḍraka killed

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then the splendorous vāsudeva ( kṛṣṇa) took up an arrow. He forcefully shot the sharp arrow at pauṇḍraka. pauṇḍro'tha vāsudevastu śarairdaśabhirāśugaiḥ | vāsudevaṁ jaghānāśu vārṣṇeyaṁ vṛṣṇinandanam ||3-101-2 pauṇḍraka vāsudeva shot ten fast moving arrows at vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa), vārṣṇeya, the son of vṛṣṇi. dārukaṁ paṣchaviṁśatyā hayāndaśabhireva ca | saptatyā vāsudevaṁ tu yādavaṁ vāsudevakaḥ ||3-101-3 pauṇḍraka shot twenty-five arrows at dāruka and ten arrows at the horses. (pauṇḍraka) vāsudeva shot seventy arrows at the yādava (kṛṣṇa). tataḥ prahasya suciraṁ keśavaḥ keśisūdanaḥ | dhṛṣṭo'sāviti manasā saṁpūjya yadunandanaḥ ||3-101-4 Then keshava, (kṛṣṇa), the slayer of keshi laughed for some time. The son of yadu (kṛṣṇa) mentally honoured pauṇḍRaka thinking: I have seen his skill. ākṛṣya śārṅgaṁ balavānsaṁdhāya ripusūdanaḥ | nārācena sutīkṣṇena dhvajaṁ ciccheda keśavaḥ ||3-101-5 Then powerful kṛṣṇa pulled out his bow śārṅga. The slayer of enemies, keshava (kṛṣṇa) shot a highly sharp arrow and cut off pauṇḍraka's flagstaff. sāratheścha śiraḥ kāyādāhṛtya yadunandanaḥ | aśvāṁścha caturo hatvā caturbhiḥ sāyakottamaiḥ ||3-101-6 The son of yadu (kṛṣṇa) separated the head of the charioteer from his body. By shooting four best arrows, he killed all the four horses. rathaṁ rājṣaḥ samāhatya tadobhau pārṣṇisārathī | cakraṁ ca tilaśaḥ kṛtvā hasankiṁchidiva sthitaḥ ||3-101-7 kṛṣṇa destroyed the king's chariot and killed both the charioteers on the backside. kṛṣṇa powdered the wheel of the chariot like sesame seeds and stood laughing. pauṇḍrako vāsudevastu rathādutplutya satvaraḥ | ādāya niśitaṁ khaḍgaṁ prāhiṇotkeśavāya saḥ ||3-101-8 pauṇḍraka vāsudeva quickly jumped out of the chariot. He took a sharp sword and threw it at keshava (kṛṣṇa). Sa khaḍgaṁ śatadhā kṛtvā tūṣṇīmāsīccha keśavaḥ | tataḥ paraṁ mahāghoraṁ parighaṁ kālasaṁmitam ||3-101-9 gṛhītvā vāsudevāya vāsudevaṁ pratāpavān | prāhiṇodvṛṣṇivīrāya sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ ||3-101-10 Breaking the sword into hundred pieces, keshava (kṛṣṇa) stood without saying anything (silent). Immediately, the splendorous pauṇḍraka vāsudeva took up the most terrible iron bludgeon (parigha), terrible like the god of death and threw at the valiant vṛṣṇi (kṛṣṇa) as all the kṣatriya-s were watching. tadvidhaṁ jagatāṁ nāthaścakāra yadunandanaḥ | The lord of the universe, the son of yadu, kṛṣṇa cut it into two pieces. tataścakraṁ mahāghoraṁ sahasrāraṁ mahāprabham ||3-101-11 triṁśadbhārasamāyuktamāyasāsyamamitrahā | ādāyātha mahārāja keśavaṁ vākyamabravīt ||3-101-12 Then the killer of enemies (pauṇḍraka), took up his highly terrible and highly splendorous cakra, having one thousand spokes, made of iron having thirty weight, and O great king (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), spoke to keshava (kṛṣṇa) the following words. paśyedaṁ niśitaṁ ghoraṁ tava cakravināśanam | anena tava govinda darpaṁ darpavatāṁ vara ||3-101-13 apaneṣyāmi vārṣṇeya sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ | Look at this sharp and terrible cakra, the destroyer of your cakra. With this cakra, O govinda! The best among the proud! O the one of the race of vṛṣṇi-s, I will destroy your pride as all the kṣatriya-s are watching. tvāmuddiśya mahāghoraṁ kṛtamanyaddurāsadam ||3-101-14 yadi shakto hare kṛṣṇa dārayedaṁ mahāspadam | This highly terrible cakra, difficult to conquer by others, is made to destroy you. O hari! kṛṣṇa, if you are capable, then cut this powerful cakra immediately. ityuktvā tacchataguṇaṁ bhrāmayitvā mahābalaḥ ||3-101-15 cikṣepātha mahāvīryaḥ pauṇḍrako nṛpasattamaḥ | Saying this, the highly powerful pauṇḍraka whirled the cakra hundred times. Then the best among kings, the highly valiant pauṇḍraka threw the cakra. avaplutya tato deśāttadutsṛjya mahābalaḥ ||3-101-16 siṁhanādaṁ mahāghoraṁ vyanadadvīryavāṁstadā | Then highly powerful kṛṣṇa leaped from his place, avoided the cakra and the valiant roared in the highly terrible voice of lion. tato vismayamāpanno bhagavāndevakīsutaḥ ||3-101-17 aho vīryamaho dhairyamasya pauṇḍrasya duḥsaham | Then lord kṛṣṇa, the son of devaki was struck by wonder. O! What a valiance! What an unbearable courage pauṇḍraka has! iti matvā jagannātha utthitashcha rathottamāt ||3-101-18 tataḥ śilāṁ samādāya preṣayāmāsa keshavam | Knowing as such, the lord of the universe, kṛṣṇa jumped out from the best chariot. Then pauṇḍraka took up a rock and threw it at keshava (kṛṣṇa). tāṁ śilāṁ preṣayāmāsa tasmai yadukulodvahaḥ ||3-101-19 Then the one who nourishes the race of yadu, kṛṣṇa, redirected that rock towards pauṇḍraka. pauṇḍreṇa suciraṁ kālaṁ vikrīḍya bhagavānhariḥ | tataścakraṁ samādāya niśitaṁ raktabhojanam ||3-101-20 Lord hari (kṛṣna) played with pauṇḍraka for a long time.
