Parva 3 Chapter 109: durvāsaso bhāṣaṇam - durvāsa chides hamsa and ḍimbhaka

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then durvāsa became angry. sage durvāsa looked at both of them (haṁsa and ḍimbhaka) with one eye having terrible fire always, as if to burn their life forces. paśyaṁstau ca durātmānau roṣavyākulitendriyaḥ | kurvanniva tadā lokānbhasmabhūtānimānnṛpa ||3-109-2 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) His senses were tormented by anger. He was looking at both the wicked souls, angrily, as though to reduce the entire world to ashes. brāhmaṇaṁ chakśuṣā paśyansaumyenānyena kevalam | uvāca vacanaṁ rājandhvaṁsata dhvaṁsateti ca ||3-109-3 At the same time, the sage was looking at the brāhmin (janārdana) with his other gentle eye. O king, (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) sage durvāsa spoke the words, "run away! run away!" ito gacchata rājānau kiṁ vilambata mā ciram | na vāṁ vacanasaṁbhūtaṁ roṣaṁ dhārayituṁ kṣame ||3-109-4 (durvāsa said) O kings! Go away from this place! Why are you delaying? Do not delay! I am unable to bear patiently, the anger generated by hearing your words. anyathā vo mahīpālānsarvāndagdhumahaṁ kṣamaḥ | kimataḥ sāhasaṁ vaktuṁ kashcha shaknoti matpuraḥ ||3-109-5 Go away! Otherwise, I am capable of burning all the kings. Who is powerful enough to speak so defiantly standing in front of me? darpaṁ vā lokavikhyātaḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ | vyapaneṣyati mandajṣau kiṁ vo vakṣyāmi sāṁpratam ||3-109-6 Your pride will be destroyed by the one who holds the conch, cakra and the mace (kṛṣṇa). O kings with slow (inferior) intellect! What shall I tell both you now? tata utthāya dharmātmā gantumaicchadyatīśvaraḥ | tato niṣeddhuṁ haṁsastaṁ yatate sma yatīśvaraṁ |||3-109-7 (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Saying this, the one with the soul of dharma, the lord of sages (durvāsa), desiring to go, got up from there. Then haṁsa tried to stop the lord of sages (durvāsa ). tasya bāhuṁ samādāya hamso nṛpavarottamaḥ | kaupīnaṁ cicchede krūraḥ kṛtānta iva sattama ||3-109-8 haṁsa, the best among the best kings, caught his (durvāsā's) hands. O the best of kings! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The cruel king (haṁsa) cut off the sage's loin cloth, as if he was death personified. yathayo'nye palāyanti disho daśa vichetasaḥ | kaṣṭaṁ heti vadanvipro mitrabhāvājjanārdanaḥ ||3-109-9 The other sages, lost their minds ( became depressed) and ran in all the ten directions. The brāhmin janārdana said, "Alas!", because of his friendship (with haṁsa and ḍimbhaka). nyavārayadyathāśakti kimidaṁ sāhasaṁ tviti | Asking "Why is this cruelty?" he tried to stop according to his ability. durvāsāḥ satyadharmastu hantumīśo'pi taṁ tataḥ ||3-109-10 mandaṁ mandamuvācedaṁ haṁsaṁ ḍimbhakameva ca | sage durvāsa, having the soul of truth and dharma, even though he was capable of killing them, spoke to haṁsa and ḍimbhaka slowly. śāpenāhaṁ samartho'pi hantuṁ rājakulādhamau ||3-109-11 tathāpi na karomyantaṁ yatayo hyatra te vayam | (durvāsa said:) O vile kings! Even though I am capable of even killing you, I am not cursing you. I am not destroying you either, because, whatever it is, we are sages. yo hi devo jagannāthaḥ keshavo yādaveśvaraḥ ||3-109-12 śaṅkhacakragadāpāṇirgarvaṁ vāṁ vyapaneṣyati | That lord, the lord of the universe, keshava (kṛṣṇa), the lord of yādava-s, the one who holds conch, cakra and mace in his hands, will destroy your pride. loke tasminyaduśreṣṭhaṁ rakṣatyevaṁ jagatpatau ||3-109-13 yuvayoḥ sarvathā jīvaḥ sajjīva iti me matiḥ | In the world, protected by the best of the yādava-s, the lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa), by all means, your lives are good. This is my opinion. jarāsandho'pi vāṁ bandhuḥ sa ca vaktuṁ na checchati ||3-109-14 īdṛśaṁ lokavidviṣṭaṁ sa hi dharmapathe sadā | Your kin, jarāsandha, will also not speak words like these, hating the people. He (jarāsandha) always stays on the path of dharma. etāvatā sa vāṁ bandhurna hi bhūyo bhaviṣyati ||3-109-15 vidveṣo hyastu vāṁ tasya māgadhasya mahīpateḥ | Till now, he is your kin. He will not be so in future. Let the king of magadha hate you. śrutvedaṁ ghorarūpaṁ tu sa hi bandhuḥ saheta chet ||3-109-16 dharmanāśo bhavettasya nātra kāryā vicāraṇā | On hearing this terrible news, if he bears, then his dharma will be destroyed. There is nothing else to be thought on this. ityuktvā gaccha gaccheti haṁsaṁ prāha punaḥ punaḥ ||3-109-17 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this, sage durvāsā told haṁsa, "go away! go away!" again and again. janārdanamuvācedaṁ durvāsā yatisattamaḥ | svastyastu tava viprendra bhaktirastu janārdane ||3-109-18 durvāsa, the best among the sages, told janārdana: O the best among brāhmins! Let there be good to you. You will have devotion on lord janārdana (kṛṣṇa). saṅgatistava tasyāstu śaṅkhacakragadābhṛtaḥ | adya śvo vā parashvo vā sādhureva sadā bhavān ||3-109-19 You will meet the lord who holds the conch, cakra and mace, either today, tomorrow or the day after. You are always a good person. na hi sādhorvināśo'sti lokayorubhayorapi | gaccha sarvaṁ piturbrūhi jṣātvā vṛttaṁ yathākhilam ||3-109-20 There can not be any destruction of a good person in either of the worlds.
